A question regarding my new project
« on: 16 May 2005, 21:26 »

Hey guys, I was wondering if some of you could help settle a debate between my wife and I.  I've been doing a webcomic for a few months and recently started up a little side project called Animals Have Problems Too.  In it, I draw animals with problems (pretty simple, I know).

The problem is my wife thinks I should use a fine point sharpie (as evidinced in "Snake with Dude Teeth") and I like it better using a Pilot G2 (all the other ones).  I dig the rougher, less cartoony style of the G2, but I can see why she likes the sharpie for clarity.  Let me know what you think.

I like the G2.
I think there are Extra Fine and an Ultra fine sharpies that may be a good compromise between the two.
I like the Extra fine sharpies just for labeling things; they seem to be clearer.

This is a pretty cute idea!

I like the heavier line weight as well, but mainly because it's smoother-looking. You could achieve the same effect with the thinner pen by drawing big and shrinking the images down before publishing them.

the biggest problem at the moment (i hope) is i don't have a scanner and am using a pretty old digital camera to get the images on the computer.  That leads to a lot of cleanup, and sometimes the lines get lost in translation.  the good news is my wife works for a nonprofit that inexplicably has computer equipment donated all the time, so i'm going to get a scanner from them in a few days. thanks for the comments!

I'm afraid that you and your wife are both wrong.

You should be using these:

Brush pens

They cost about $4 per pen (CDN$) and are the best pens I've ever worked with.

If you're going to work in a non-digital format, these pens are the way to go.

They also have finer point pens, and graphics pens (surf the site).

Ok... but they're both ballpoint pens... the biro pens just have a tiny ballpoint compared to a standard Bic pen.

So that Biro is better than a standard pen... yeah... but nowhere near as good as a proper art pen/brush.

I used to love inking with a proper nib, and india ink... but it just gets so damned messy.

Well, I went all over my tiny little hellhole of a town (read: I went to two places) and didn't find those brush pens.  I will keep up the search and may find some next time I head to Houston, but for now I'm sticking with the G2 but making sure I get good pressure on everything and being very careful with my clean up work.  Hopefully that's a happy medium.

PS - Jeph, how did you like the Emu with ADD?

those brush pens or ones very similar I think I've seen at Wal-MArt before.  I don't remember how much they cost I just remember seeing them before.  I like the ones with the ballpoint pen though it gives character.  It doesn't have to be perfect.

cute comics!

I definately gotta try the brush pen myself.  Currently, I use a black gel pen <covers head>.

I tend to be a bit of an engineer and less of an artist at times with my drawing.

Gotta love that Racoon with OCD! :D
