I am a fan of Les Claypool and his various projects but other then that I don't really think I've heard much considered Jam.

Oh wait, I heard one song by OAR and it was kind of obnoxious.  I think.

OAR is the frat boy jam band.  They're pretty crappy, but rich frat boys (and other kids who think smoking pot and pretending to be deep is railing against the man) listen to them and think it makes them hippies.

Aren't TMV neo-prog or progcore or whatever these kids nowadays call it? I don't mean to be rude if they have jam roots (I have very little experience of Jam bands at all apart from all the Les Claypool related stuff that seems to count, <3 Les) But isn't calling TMV a jam band because they noodle about as logical as calling Electric Wizard a jam band because they smoke vast amounts of pot?

Les Claypool is indeed Win. (Also, Check out Buckethead, he's in the sort of area of Claypool.)

And I don't think TMV is a jam band, but I haven't seen them in concert (And don't plan to, really)

i'd say about 3 popped-collars less fratty that the fratster himself. (everyone knows frattiness is measured in popped-collars, kegs and roofies, or was that one mysogyny? oh well)

P.S. i like the word mysogyny, 3 Y's plus it's fun to say it's like massageny...

I shed tears, too, but they were tears of joy. I really can't stand Phish. They're like a poor photocopy of the Grateful Dead, and the Dead weren't even all that great. People nowadays are obsessed with them just because Jerry Garcia is dead and has an ice cream flavor named after him.

I definetely agree with that one! Phish is terrible!!!! Grateful Dead are ok, but not my type of music. But there is still no way you can compare those two.

As fas as jam bands go, some are alright, but the biggest problem i have is when the songs are like 20 minutes long. Its like, ok we get the idea, you smoke pot and are a hippy and all we need is world peace and everyone to love each other........Yeesh.

Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains are up there as one of my favorite bands. It really ticks me that they only played 5 or so shows as that outfit before Les Claypool left to do more of his Les Claypooly nonsense. And Buckethead forget that he was in the band. And Brains... what the fuck is with Brains anyways...?

Jam is good. Noise rock is bad. Fuck Wolf Eyes and certainly fuck The Mars Volta. Just because you play long songs, it doesn't make them jams.

PS: How do I get a file from my computer (like a pic) to be my avatar?

I'm not a huge grateful dead fan at all.  I like a few songs, but they just don't really do it for me.

I love Phish though.

Just to be geeky for a second, noise rock is a term used for people like Unsane and not Wolf Eyes. Harsh, and not improvised at all, it's very close to hardcore and metal in sound. Wolf Eyes are generally referred to as noise in my experience which is a whole other kettle of fish. Some noise is improvised but a lot isn't, I have a friend who's spent close to a year working on some noise and it's very carefully structured.

I'm actually surprised someone would refer to Wolf Eyes and The Mars Volta as being related like that. Is their new album more interesting then? I might have to give it a listen, I'm pretty fond of Wolf Eyes but the few songs I heard from their first record were in a totally different realm.

If you want to use a pic from your computer as an avatar then host it somewhere like photobucket, that's what I did with mine since I needed to resize the original.

They're different sides of unrelenting noise rock. But is dislike them both. What they share is taht they attempt to cover their lack of musical talent by slamming on synthesizers and playing too loud for you to think about their music. Noise, like jam band music, is also a hell of a lot more fun for the people making it than those listening. I'd know. I make loud, squeky, high-pitched guitar thrash all the time. Usually my brother beats me up for it. And he is perfectly right to do so. It is annoyin as shit to listen to.

Depends on your view. I've just been playing some Sickness, Wolf Eyes and Stalingrad's noise stuff and I enjoyed it, and I make no noise myself. And since it's late it was on quiet, so the volume wasn't preventing my enjoying the music. Actually, when I caught Wolf Eyes live it wasn't horrifically loud either, Lightning Bolt afterwards had more volume. I just enjoy brutal, abrasive music. Although actually Wolf Eyes aren't something I find all that Brutal. Very good though.

And like I said, Wolf Eyes aren't noise rock at all, that's the kind of stuff you'd have found on Amphetamine Reptile back in the day. You ever heard 'Scrape' by Unsane? That's noise rock.

Buckethead probably forgets alot of things. Mostly his name and that he's wearing a bucket.

Also, I do believe the drummer's name is Brian, and they just switched around two letters, hence you get ZOMBIE FOOD.

Whats with all the hate la creme? If ya don't like noise don't listen to it. Some noise takes skill some noise doesn't. It's not about skill, it's about doing what you want to do, it's about saying what you want to say, inspireing a feeling, building a bridge. A band can be technical as anything and still be rubbish, Whilst there's plenty of punk rock out there with three chords or less that's perfection. You've likely never been to a good noise show and if you did you'd likely hate it. I've never been to a good jam show and I would certainly hate it if I went to one.
I'll declare that I don't know crap about jam bands and yet declare I dislike them and am thus uninformed. Can you say you really know anything about noise? yet you declare that you hate it? Could you take your squeaky guitar thrash up on stage and get people to like it? It's us noise heads who are supposed to be the hateful ones. First noise gig I went to three of us were thrashing around like crazy having the time of our lives whilst the rest of the audience were cowering in the corners, they just didn't get it. I'm never going to say, "Fuck Jam Bands" why should I? I don't hate them, they just suck. Fuck Wolf Eyes? That's a cassette by their friend Mike Connely of Hair Police.

People said the same thing about the Clash decades ago.  What sounds like noise to you sounds like music to me.  What sounds like music to you probably still sounds like noise to my grandparents.  Should the tastes of my grandparents dictate what is and isn't music?  No.  So why should your tastes be considered the standard?  Music is anything that uses tone, rhythm, or any perversion of the above.  Discordant art prog is still music.

Additionally, they're not "hiding" a lack of talent.  These guys are talented, and it shows when they play more traditional tunes.  They just aren't satisfied with that...they want to play discordant art prog.  There's nothing wrong with playing music you want to play.  Playing something more ear/radio-friendly because that's what you're expected to play isn't what you OR I would call "good musicianship"...I think we can both agree that's what's called "selling out."

i don't know much about noise rock and don't claim to. i just want to point something out here real quick.

be careful of judging peoples arguments as unfounded because they don't know much about a genre they don't like. they don't know all that much about it because they don't like it and have no reason to. IMO it is better to counter thier opinion with one of your own in order to sway them, not attack them or say that thier argument isn't valid. noone here claims to be the difinative authority on music, and certainly not on genres they don't like. all we all do is voice our own opinion and just because we don't say IMO every post doesn't mean anyone is trying to say that others are straight up wrong. music taste is subjective and i think everyone knows this, otherwise there would just be a big reference guide with all the music ever created objectively scored in labratories. damn that would suck.

P.S. this isn't in response to any particular post, just a friendly reminder so no one needs to get defensive :)

To drag this back on topic and away from defences of lovely lovely noise (which I think has been done more than adequately)... I wonder why it is that the UK has imported vast amounts of musical phenomena from the US over the years, but not jam bands? From what people are saying it seems this stuff is pretty popular, but I'm still not even sure what these bands sound like (which I shall rectify by downloading some of the people mentioned).

Alot of the American jam bands rarely tour abroad.  Since they don't have much of a media presence it's hard to build a fan base without constant touring, which is pretty cost-prohibitive for an American band to do in Europe, especially when there's good money to be made playing gigs in North America.

If you're interested I recommend hitting up The Llama, most of the big name jam bands have allowed their concert recordings to be hosted there, not to mention a lot of "no names."  Check it out.

Ah ha.  A quick search of the inertnets reveal the song that grates on my nerves is "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker."

Hurk.
"O.A.R. (aka Of a Revolution) converted from an Ohio State frat band to Billboard chartbuster and headliner at major venues across America."

Also learned is a band I like, Medeski Martin & Wood, is lumped in with jam bands on yahoo music.

A neatish 'jam band' is submission hold.

Though I wouldn't really call them a 'jam band' what they do is super neat.
Their latest ceedee 'what holds back the elephant' has an example of what they do.
They improvise!!!

Which I guess technically jamming, but they just start playing a song and watch each other intently and feel it all...and there is lyrics!
In the song the pretty lady singer thing just sings out a list of items found in a time capsule somewhere in BC I think from like 1994.

Its pretty rad.

Have you heard The Din? It's basically Submission Hold without Jen doing improvised music, they opened up when I saw them in Amsterdam a few years back. But from what I can tell it's pretty different from what these kinds of bands are doing.

Oh yeah, and Pool Cleaner are worth keeping an eye out for as well. They're also improvised and feature Submission Hold's former flute player. She does some great stuff looping her flute, the whole band create some really powerful atmospheres. It's a shame she's not on that last Submission Hold record.

Although I'm not normally into "jam bands" I do have a soft spot in my heart for the Allman Brothers since it was practically the only thing I heard growing up thanks to my ABB fanatic dad.
