I would personally recommend 2-mix, as they did the Gundam Wing soundtrack and that was actually pretty cool. Apart from that I don't know much about J-Pop. I like me a bit of J-Rock/Visual Kei though: Dir En Grey, Malice Mizer and X-Japan are pretty good.

Two favorite japanese bands are Do as Infiniti and Orange Range.

There are a lot of older japanese bands worth checling out too, for instance:

The Pillows
The Brilliant Green
Malice Mizer
Dir En Grey
Psycho Le Cemu
X-Japan (Seriously old but pretty rockin)
Melt Banana (Noisey!)
Shonen Knife (I heard they are touring agian...)


If you dig on Malice Mizer's later stuff you can find their singer's solo stuff under the name Gackt.

What I think is funny is Gackt likes to dress up like Alucard from Castlevania.

As for Japanese bands (although since they are not J-Rock or J-Pop this is slightly off topic) I like Sigh and Sabbat.

I remember downloading Married To A Frenchman from the Asian Man site years ago, and thinking "what the hell? This isn't ska-punk! It sounds like Devo... and it's amazing!"

theres this one band I really like, they're called Unicorn Table, haven't been able to find much on them though.

Nami Tamaki is good too, she did alot of the gundam seed music.

Mix of Jpop, Jrock, Visual Kei, Euro/Guro names (some of them just go all over the board) that I enjoy:

Maaya Sakamoto-- familiar with Escaflowne or RahXephon?  The opening themes are hers, along with the image songs.  Some of her stuff is rather filk in style

Gackt-- dresses up like Char from Z Gundam currently.  Getting back into his older style and losing all the random "wooo-ooo-oooo" warbling and overused dakishimetes is good for him.  I don't think he's made anything I don't like though

L'Arc~en~Ciel (also P'unk~en~Ciel and D'ark~en~Ciel)-- watch FMA?  READY STEADY GO is their work.  Also featured in Kenshin (The Fourth Avenue Cafe) and who knows how many other animes

Dir en Grey -- scary fangirls, good music.  Harder stuff with occassional Kyo scream, but they do the occassional ballad too (including full orchestra in Ain't Afraid to Die~with frosted ambience)

Miyavi-- varies with the song.  If you like Dir en Grey, you might enjoy it.  

SID-- somewhat jazzy.  Mao sings with a odd sort of breathy desperation.  

Malice Mizer -- their style depends somewhat on which "era" the song was made during (Tetsu, Gackt, Klaha).  the Gackt stuff is somewhat more catchy (e.g. Brise, Ma Cherie, Apres Midi); the Klaha era is a bit harder

Hide (of X-Japan)-- if for nothing more than his awesome guitar ability

Hyde (of L'Arc~en~Ciel)-- if you like his band, you'll probably like his solo work

Asian Kung-Fu Generation -- of Naruto and FMA fame.  catchy stuff

Orange Range -- of Bleach fame.  They make me think of a mix of Porno Graffiti and Asian Kung-Fu Generation

Porno Graffiti--  the song Melissa and Agehachou is a good place to start.  fast paced, bouncy, depressing lyrics to happy music much?

Yoko Kanno-- Did you like the music from Cowbow Bebop or Wolf's Rain?  you already like her work

I don't know why, but a lot of Two Mix's music makes me think of Take on Me.  Best way I know to describe them.  I also think very much of the 80's.

And does anyone remember Luna Sea?

Anyway I'm done recommending for now ^^

For more traditional JPop, there's always Utada Hikaru, Minmi or Boa, Dragon Ash, Smap...

For more rockin' stuff, there's Orange Range, L'Arc en Ciel, Flow... of course Puffy Amiyumi who everyone probably knows for their Teen Titans theme more than anything else :/

Yoko Kanno is interesting, though not really Jpop, since a lot of her stuff is really orchestral in nature.  I'd almost put her at pure electronica.

If you have the international channel you should definatley watch pop japan tv, that's a good show and it was what introduced me to some of the stuff I know. The only band I know of that no one else mentioned is Zone. They rock, as do Orange Range and Nami Tamaki. Sowelu is pretty good too. Also without a doubt all the music from Gravitation, I can't remember for the life of me what the band is called at the moment though. I'm sure Aphi could help me out here as she has a rockin avatar featuring the main character from that show :).

I could gush like a japanese schoolgirl in pigtails, But that usually gets odd stares and cutting remarks. Yes guitar wolf are from japan and i love them, They have this unabashed sincere love for a long dead phenomenon called rock and roll. They just rock, The attitude, leather jackets and chainsmoking may seem contrived but if you've really heard these guys you would know they do what they do just for the love of it. I really like them because they never really fit in with a distinct era, or genre. There as jet-set and timeless as the pixies and id better stop, I felt a girlish squeal welling up and thats just not a road i wanna go down... again. *ahem*

What this has to do with j-pop i dunno,

i JUST watched Kill Bill vol.1, and i saw them! what a great movie (and a great soundtrack too!).  Quentin Tarantino is a genius.

Shinichiro Watanabe makes some good anime.  Samurai Champloo was my favorite new series of last year.

Also:

Plastic Tree - Their song Angelfish is quite well known, and will get stuck in your head like no other. Happy mellow sunshine song.

flow-war - The lead singer has a lovely voice. An overall good band in my opinion.

GLAY - I can't believe no one has mentioned them yet! GLAY was pretty much to Japan how the Backstreet Boys were to the USA. ( Only better in my opinion. I was just trying to make the statement that they were pretty damn popular.) I have a DVD of some of their music videos. (It's quite comical. Some are pretty cool, though.) I hate the lead singer, but it's nice to listen to. The song 'Modern' sticks out in my mind particularily. It's fun and catchy. Plus, I always thought the bassist was teh secks.

Check Amazon?  You can probably find some decent deals on used CDs in the marketplace, if you don't mind getting it used, that is.

J-Punk with AMAZING drumming - Zazen Boys (look for Kuroi Shitagi)

Number Girl - just amazing
bloodthirsty butchers (as above, not quite as good)
Boris if you like drone/fuzzed up rock
Polysics for Yes!
Cocco - made great grungy/folky rock
Shiina Ringo - Just an incredible arranger and musician
Dir en grey also good, seeing them in Paris next month. God protect me from the evil and violent fangirls...



P.S. ASturge I have the special edition Box set Cowboy Bebop soundtrack (with live Seatbelts!). It owns.

P.P.S. Also, damn the inexplicable lack of Katamari Damacy in the UK. Would I need to have my PS2 modded to play US games on a UK machine?

The Pillows are a must, I can't say enough good things about them and their music. I'll add my little gold nuggets to the thread: Thee Michelle Gun Elephant and Nujabes. TMGE is a fantastic rock band who's cd (Gear Blues) never fails to amuse me. Samurai Champloo put Nujabes on the radar. His cd Metaphorical Music is without a doubt my favorite hip hop album.

The easiest way to get cd's, obviously, are with p2p programs and bit torrent. If you're going to buy, beware of the lofty prices--most are imports. Animenation.com and NipponExport.com are good sites but don't necessarily have good prices that agree with our wallets.

Hoorah! They very much rule. As does Yoko Kanno (or as i like to call her, Queen of the Soundtracks), Polysics and the now defunct Mug-Mop. Cornelius  is great for some chilled out, ambient listening too.

I have to thank that Sugoi show which used to come on the Sci-fi Channel for introducing me to some top Japanese bands. Any Brits here remember it?
