From the rant in today's PvP.  Funny how these things are precipitated by Scott Kurtz so often.

Quote
First of all, Penny-Arcade brings in HUNDREDS of thousands of readers a day, not tens of thousands. Also the creator of Ctrl Alt Del is Tim BUCKLEY not Absath. So thanks to the Tribune’s crack research team on THAT one. But, to me, the most disturbing inaccuracy in this article is to lump Ctrl Alt Del in with Penny-Arcade and PvP.

Now, I know this is going to send everyone over at CAD on a total snit, but let’s all be brutally honest here. CAD does not share a "formula similar to Penny-Arcade". Buckley has observed and replicated Penny-Arcade’s formula EXACTLY. Everything from the violence and cursing, to the entertainment-unit turned sentient being, to the unnecessary use of a dash in the URL has been painstakingly lifted from Penny-Arcade. But you would never know that from reading this article. When this article becomes the official history of webcomics, the order of events may be rewritten. If you ask around now I'm sure you will find, that with many people, it already HAS been.

I've met Tim Buckley once, and he was drunk for part of that.  While he's been successful and knows it, he's a pretty humble guy, who would probably be the first to say that he isn't in the league of Penny Arcade.  Still, Buckley works for his success, he busts his ass and he knows that he owes a lot to his fans.  Kurtz is a slacker who disrespects his fans and hates the idea that anyone may be better than him.

Additionally, the amount of prentention out there in the webcomics community is really really annoying.  It comes through in their work and how they treat their fans, and I've found that my favourite comics are the ones written by some of the least pretentious folks out there, the ones doing it because they love it.

Kurtz is also just a jerk who is all upset over his offer to newspapers going bust, so he has his underwears all in a bunch and will take it out on anyone who has actually worked for what they've got.

Yeah, I read that this morning, and just shook my head.

Tycho and McCloud get into it over something RELEVANT to the community, and Kurtz pussies-out (pardon the language) by basically saying "Now guys, I like you both, *sucking noises* I think you both have some good points *slurping noises* so let's all just get along, ok?"

Then, not even a week later, he's insulting T.B. for absolutely no reason.

Typical bully.  He gets dragged into something, and he winks out... then turns around, and stirs the shit with a 'smaller guy' (I guess in Kurtz's case, they're all smaller... dude has his own gravitational pull) just because he can.

He won't fuck with anyone who's doing better than him, but he'll mock everyone who's doing as well as him.

Yeah, he seems like a real cool guy.

Fortebass, you're dead-on... the guy has some major insecurity-issues.

I completely agree with you on this.  CAD is one of my favorite comics, in part because he treats his fans well.  I've seen other comics where the creator is being a total dick and it just sorta ruins the comic for me.

Maybe its just me but I didn't realize there was so much drama in the web comics.

I just read the comics and either continue to read them or don't.
Maybe I should be more critical but I'll leave that to someone else.

Btw I read PvP, PA and CAD.

Man, the Niego strip that was the parody of Sunday's PvP was awesome.

Tim Buckley seems to be one of the less pretentious comic artist at the moment.  I liked his response, especialy

There is big difference in PA and CAD.  Continuity in CAD and the lack of it in PA usually.

There usually doesn't seem to be that much drama in web comics, just sort of an every once in a while sort of thing.  It's just sort of dragged on longer then usual.

Kurtz is just a jerk. CAD is one of my favourite comics. Every gaming comic is going to be compared to PA, but that doesn't make it identical. TB is a good artist and he isn't just ripping off PA. He doesn't just do the same joke week in week out either *cough* panda attack *cough*

happybirthdaygelatin, a Niego reader!

i don't know where i stumbled upon Niego from, but i love that comic. it might not be the best art on earth, but it's got personality, and i love the characters.

...and um...

I agree with the liking of humble web comic artists. I love QC because Jeph is such a chill, down to earth seeming guy. Same goes for Tim at CAD. It's obvious they both bust their ass for their audience, and they love it. You have to totally respect those guys. Meanwhile, Kurtz bitches and moans.

Psst. Jeph linked Niego back in the day, and there've been a couple guest strips for major sites from niego as well. I read it too, and it generally kicks ass. I would like to point out though that no one in the webcomics community is a chill as Ryan North.

I think the most important thing to note in all of this is;

Ignore Kurtz.

He's an asshat.

Saturnine1979, I found Niego through here.  They (or he, depending on which point it was done) done some of my favourite guest strips.

Ignoring Kurtz is easy, for me at least.  I don't read his comic.

Jason Sigala was a regular here right around when he started Neigo.

As for Kurtz, like a typical bully, when he realized his mark was going to fight back he back pedaled like crazy.
