I never really got into this band, but every band I like these days seems to be compared to them, so I was wondering where would be a good place to start.

I think they only have 2 albums.

Get In the Aeroplane Over the Sea; it's a classic.

Yeah...but I'm very indecisive.

Thanks.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the best albums of the 90's. I've never heard of anyone who preferred their other album, though I suppose there's someone.

Aeroplane is definately their masterpiece. I've not heard On Avery Island though.

I sampled some from that other one and it did not seem quite good enough to buy, but maybe only because of the small samples.

Aeroplane Over the Sea is a great CD though some people have said NMH is evil or bad, is killing a certain genre, or maybe it was said something like "NMH is the reason "?" is going bad" something like that....and I did not know what they were talking about.  Crazy music critics.

I'm downloading this (ITAOTS) now, and I'm going to give it a fair reception. I warn you though, if it sucks major chuff, that I just cracked by second can of Blackthorn cider and have no intention of stopping, so criticisms will be harsh, incoherent and badly spelled.

Avery Island is great as well.  While I wouldn't say that I prefer it over In the Aeroplane..., it's certainly a fantastic album.  It took me a few months of watching it sit and collect dust before I finally really listened to it.  Some people criticize it for droning, but truly, it has plenty of catchy stuff too: Where You'll Find Me Now, Gardenhead-Leave Me Alone, and Naomi (my favourite NMH song after Two-Headed Boy Pts. 1 and 2).

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is very high on my "to buy" list. All I can say is that I love what I've heard of it, and can't wait to get into the rest of it.

I guess the general concensus is for ITAOTS, then.

It wasn't that bad an album, to be fair to it. Quite monotonous to listen to all in one go, I thought, but nice uncomplicated style.

I love both.

Im seriously the most insane NMH fan out there. Anything Jeff Mangum related is destined for my shelf.

ITAOTS is a masterpiece.

On Avery Album is a masterpiece.

OAI is actually alot more diverse and explorative. It just doesnt come together in the same way as Aeroplane.

There's also a released live album of Jeff Mangum acoustic live. Tis very good.

Ive also got millions of torrents of live recordings....

give on avery island a chance if you liked in the aeroplane over the sea, it does have some great stuff, its just a different kind of album, its more relaxed where aeroplane had more pop songs
but then avery island still has leave me alone/gardenhead and SONG AGAINST SEX (such an awesome song) which are both great pop songs
and if you like droning stuff, someone is waiting is beautiful
do start with in the aeroplane over the sea but don't overlook on avery island

Two-Headed Boy pt. 2 is my favourite NMH song! I love it. It's a song I can get lost in everytime. I love In The Aeroplane, I've not heard the other album though. One day I will.
