I like 'em.  Can't stand New Order, though, and the early Joy Division singles (pre-Ian Curtis) are pretty ordinary.  But then Curtis came along and they became one arse-kicking band.  Shame about the suicide.  "Transmission" is one of the great songs of the era - like a desperate, slightly manic English response to the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner".

Well I thought it was tasteless, and I am not a fan, I only like Love Will Tear Us Apart mildly. It's a funny thing actually, it sounded better in my head than in reality, akin to the thing I have with songs I haven't heard in awhile and then they are going too fast or too slow as to the version I remembered... Odd that...

Iīm a BIG fan. itīs one of my Top10 bands ever. with New Order.
Early Joy Division had some of the best punk songs ever. And the first 3 NO Albums were brilliant.
Itīs a band were every member (drummer, bassist, guitarist, and vocalist) was truly original in their work. they paved down their own road.

IMHO "Still" is the best album, if you are going to listen to anything by them listen to that (I know nothing technical about music, just that is the one that spent most time in my walkman when I was in my final yr @ uni.. that & "The Downward Spiral" pretty much continuously whenever I was not in lectures & it felt *fabulous*)

I never listened to Joy Division, but I get the impression that I wouldn't like them that much.  Fans of them, recommend to me an album to download!  I want to know whether they're shitty wankers, appreciably good, or world-alteringly amazing (my hunch is that they land somewhere between the former two but I'm refraining from making that assumption).

mmm i wouldīt recommend it.
they have 2 albums. thatīs it. and then lots of singles and b-sides

so if you get the albums ("unknown pleasures" and "closer") and the singles compilation ("substance") you will have most of the stuff..

the most accesible album IMHO is actually the singles compilation, lot of great tracks, an it has "love will tear us apart" (the most famous joy division song) and "atmosphere", and lots of other gems.

I love Joy Division so much.

My friend however had the funniest lament the other day. She was sitting there moaning about how she loved him and she said in the most melodramatic voice ever: "But he died 25 years ago. He had killed himself before I was even born. It was never meant to be." and sighed.

I love Joy Division. My favorite tracks are Love Will Tear us Apart (I don't care if it's cliche man.), Day of Lords, and 24 Hours.

And I think Transmission is kind of boring. I don't get why a lot of people say it's the best ever.

"New Dawn Fades" is easily my favourite song; there is also a Moby cover of it floating around, his voice is all scratchy and upset sounding: smashing & startling at the same time.
& pah @ LWTUA, sounds just like New Order (*dives for cover* :) )

Joy Division are pretty good, but I'm kind of tired of every music magazine ever doing a feature on Ian Curtis whenever they've got extra pages to fill.  I'm pretty sure I read essentially the same article three times before I started skipping anything ever written about Ian Curtis.

On the other hand, 24 Hour Party People is a hilarious movie.

Listen to Unknown Pleasures, when they were a band that rocked.  The first song everyone should hear of Joy Division's is the first track from the first album ("Disorder") as far as I'm concerned.  It's dark, not really moany and depressing, but cool in a dark kind of way.

I mean, really, it's their only song like that. It was perfect. It was bare, no keyboards, no unneeded instruments, just a alarm-like guitar and awesome bassline, with Curtis' voice at it's best. It's just an awesome song, period.

can't say i'm a huge fan but of the more well known tracks, 'atmosphere' and 'she's lost control' are excellent songs. His voice grates a little bit but thats just a matter of taste, as songwriters and in terms of their musical influence, nuff respect to joy division :) I would include love will tear us apart but due to my pathetically low tolerance for overplayed music i can't listen to that tune anymore. Also in the film series 7: the contenders, its used by two high school art students as the soundtrack to an incredibly gothy film featuring lots of running down corridors into mirrors and frilly clothing. Now i can't listen to it without picturing that and laughing. *prays for forgiveness from mr curtis*

Both bands are insanely overrated. JD are too mopey for my taste, plus there's the fact that anyone who drops their name is automatically hipper than everyone else in the room. New Order were far less pretentious, but their songs are really hit-or-miss. "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" are nothing short of genius, but everything else? I swear, every time I hear "Confusion" I lose a brain cell.

Anyway, I'm listening to Unknown Pleasures again. Yeah, I think it wins over Closer.
