Oh Brother, Where art thou.
« on: 02 Aug 2005, 19:57 »

I purchased a copy last week, it's an old favourite and I thought it needed to join my DVD collection.

So I asked my BF to watch it with me, and he asked me what it was. WHAT?? How could you not have heard of it?

So i mentioned my shock to my friends, and they all confess to never having heard of it.

So i mentioned it to my co worker and she's never heard of it either.

What is going on???

It's not the best movie ever, but it's pretty damn good, and it's soundtrack, had even more success then the movie.

Do i just live in a "geographical oddity', where people don't watch good films?

It's an all-time favorite of mine. I live in So Cal where everybody's into the indie movies deal, so a lot of people have at least heard of it. I thought it was fairly big anyways though?

Awesome movie, so funny.

(I thought Miller's Crossing was boring...)

Neskah, there is only one conclusion to draw from your sorry tale: you need to get new friends, and a new boyfriend.  With good taste in films.

Don't get me started on the Coen Brothers... I love all there pictures and have them all on DVD (except Ladykillers which I haven't got round to seeing yet)

I could sit here and quote them all day.

Top 5 coen films

1. Miller's Crossing
2. The Big Lebowski
3. Fargo
4. O Brother Where Art Thou?
5. Barton Fink / Rasing Arizona / Hudsucker / god damit all of them don't make me choose

MY bf just told me it was only released in Indie cinemas in this country (NZ) or atleast in this area.

Man still I need to start spreading the word.

Anyways we watched it and he thoroughly enjoyed it. So i guess he's forgiven

Hehe. Few things are as entertaining as quoting Big Lebowski hours on end. Personally, I liked Fargo and Barton Fink better, since they has this very odd disturbing feeling. Barton Fink especially, with its incredible load of symbolism and surreal filming. Which features in Oh Brother... as well, by the way. Come to think of it, Barton Fink and Oh Brother... have many very simular themes.

I have always wondered about that... what parts connect to what part of the Odyssey? The Sirines and the Cyclops are obvious... but what are the others?

Yes, that part totally defined the role of the cop (damned if I remember her name). Even though it had so little to do with the plot, it told us just how well she handles situations that affect and shock her.

But there are no lasers?

There should be more films with lasers. If I was making the universe, I would have pretty much started with lasers. Screw butterflies and daffodils. Lasers are where it's at.

+900 trillion points if you get the clumsily paraphrased reference

well, he has been away from home for a number of years, everyone thinks he's dead/ditched out, his wife is on the verge of getting remarried...
it's not an exact copy, mind you, and i'm pretty sure the coen brothers said they'd never even read the odyssey.  this site has some more answers about it.

plus, i think the "super lady" thing wasn't to establish margie's character so much as it was a chance to have a chinese-american with a minnesotan accent.  you take people like him and the gum-chomping "white bear lake.  go bears!" chick for granted around here until you see them on the big screen and then you laugh your ass off.  and for those outside of the area, i'm sure it just sounded kinda funny.

Sadly heretic, my br, friends and co-workersare not joking.

We're an amazingly varied bunch, so we don't share all the same interests. Thou there is one friend that has remarkabley similar film and music taste with me, I would hav thouht he'd at least seen in it or heard of it.

Sad thing is I could never sit them down to watch it.

Actually, the whole reference/non-reference question is the charm of the movie. I love movies, books and music that has such underlying themes, that it comes out of the other end. David Lynch is a great example of that too.
Concerning Oh Brother Where Art Thou, you could endlessly repeat the great movie and scoop up all the references and either miss a bunch or find some that aren't even there, totally over-analysing everything. A fun hobby for rainy sunday afternoons.

George Clooney = Odysseus
John Goodman = Cyclops
Daniel von Bargen (the sheriff) = Poseidon / Satan
His dog would therefore be Cerberus
Holly Hunter (Penny) = Penelope (Odysseys' wife)
Tommy Johnson (the blues guitarist [dunno the actor's name]) = The god of the East Wind, Eurus
Three Women on rocks = Sirens / Circe
The flood that destroys his house and such is synonomous with the great whirlpool, Charybdis

There's a couple others, but they're really minor and dont really help the story. For the last six times I've watched to find out who's supposed to represent Hermes, and I just can't figure it out.

Great movie, but the Big Lebowski wins for me. "Nobody fucks with the Jesus!"

Was looking into the soundtrack the other day because I love the movie, and found that Tommy Johnson was an actually guitarist and the character in the movie was based on him.

There's a short biography on him, with a few free samples of his work.

I lived in Minnesota for a year and a half. Before moving, I saw Fargo and thought it was one of the worst movies ever. I then moved to the midwest, and everyone liked it and made it the ggrrrrreeeatest of all time. Im sorry, but if I was a cop, "funny looking" does not give me an accurate description to catch the guy. And yes, people DO talk like that out there. Thank god im back in cali.

Anywho: "Damn, we're in a tight spot!" In my top five favourite movies of all time.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle, I didn't know that was a Coen brothers film.  I mean, it's so obvious in retrospect, but I'd never thought about it.

I really need to see more of their movies.  I've only seen half the movies on your list (this is literally only the second time in my life that I've seen someone refer to Hudsucker Proxy,) but the ones I've seen are uniformly awesome.

brilliant:) One of my friends and I have a game/annoying curse, of constantly sticking TBL quotes into conversations. If someone starts whining they'll be told "you're being very undude" or if someone comes up with a stupid idea "Yeah. That's a great plan, X. That's fucking ingenious, if I understand it correctly. That's a Swiss fuckin' watch."

Yep, sad, I know. It's just this movie really ties my life together. :p Everyone should see a few Coen films, it should be prerequisite for well, just about everything.
