Gay cowboys!
« on: 10 Sep 2005, 14:48 »

Ok, I saw the trailer for the Heath Ledger/Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) movie about two cowboys that find love in each other against the elements.  The title?

Brokeback Mountain.

Initial snickering aside, the movie does look pretty cool (being shot by Ang Lee and all) but the only reservation I really had was Michelle Williams.  I just hope she's better than Katie Holmes was in Batman.

Yes, my gf who loves both these men and I will be watching this when it comes "out" (HURR HURR)!

Any thoughts?  Anyone going to watch?[/u]

EDIT:  I can't read and got the movie title wrong. DURR HURR

It just won the Golden Lion at Venice, which seems like a pretty good recommendation.  Also, Ang Lee has an amazing track record (regardless of what you think of Hulk).  However I have absolutely no idea when it's going to open over here.

The pudding was the first thing I thought when I heard about this movie. I had severe reservations and was thinking to myself that this was just going to be schlocky and lame...until I saw the trailer...

Damn you, Ang Lee. Damn you.

Looks good, i read somewhere that the love scenes between Ledger and Gylenall were so intense that Gylenhall broke his nose.

lol. i want to see it due to the leading men. i feel so shallow upon saying this, but heath ledger and jake gyllenhaal...... wow. they are like the cutest actors ever. :) kissing, possibly. lol. nice...

lol. but saying that though feels so much like hearing crazy fangirl freshman at my school, and the comparison makes me feel silly for wanting to see it. "OMG OMG OMG HEATH AND JAKE OMG OMG I WANT TO DIE!!11!!!"

My female friends want to see it for the same reason, they're not crazed groupies, they're just girls who like seeing guys kissing.

I'm sure under the eye candy and guy-guy action there is an intense plot and interesting story that explores the concept of love existing in a non-mainstream way.  I am sure that BrokeBack Mountain will dazzle audiences as well as destroy the hetrosexual hegemony of modern cowboyry.

I just want to see them two hotties kissing, period.

I just looked it up on imdb... and I would watch it, but it sounds like it's sad. I mean, i wasn't expecting a HAPPY movie, particularly with the time period it's set in, but i hate watching love stories where things end badly... movies that make me cry just aren't my cup of tea. Unless i'm home alone and not going to be interrupted.

Hear, Hear! (or is it here, here? I'm too tired to remember...)  Guy on Guy is Hot, and that is a good enough reason to see any movie.

And don't feel shallow.  Lately I've been having a hard time paying attention in movies without hot guys. *sweatdrop* (well, unless they're really interesting) So I should feel shallow.  Not you.

"Brokeback Mountain" was originally a short story by E. Annie Proulx, which was extremely good but yes, sad. Like, heartbreaking sad. I mean, it's tough to imagine gay cowboys in Wyoming going any kind of positive direction, what with homophobia and all, but add into that that Proulx is a really good writer and yeah.

The funny thing about Ang Lee directing is that I keep seeing posters saying "Director of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon," which totally makes me think of fight scenes. Cowboys aren't exactly built for speed, folks, so hopefully Lee will tone it down a little bit. The fight scene is kinda clumsy and brutal, and I can't imagine Lee will make it anything less.

I remember staring at the poster in the theater lobby thinking, "wha...?" for like an hour when I first saw it. Hollywood putting out a gay cowboy film? Refreshingly unexpected or unexpectedly refreshing.

Can't wait to see this movie, although i have a few qualms.
Firstly, did anyone see in the trailer Jake Gyllenhall's character has this one line which is probably in the same cheesy movie line category as "Jerry Maguires" ..'you had me at hello.' It goes something like 'I WISH I COULD QUIT YOU'. i don't know who wrote that line but it sounds like something that an alcoholic would say to a glass of bourbon.
Secondly, despite some obviously drop dead gorgeous looking boys in the beginning, for some reason Heath and Jake develop extremelydisturbing sideburns as the movie progresses. Now, being an 80s baby myself, i was wondering if 70s sideburns were really that god awful?

Any hoo, it's coming out in maybe late january here in ozzieland which peeves me to no end! But has anyone else noticed that it is only one in a string of gay films coming out like breakfast on pluto (cillian murphy as a trannie...is it wrong i find that hot?) and transamerica. i say more independent films! hoorah hoorah!

i got excited when i heard about this one.

apparently there's only one sex scene, and it's all of 40 seconds long (give or take a few). the whole gay cowboy thing is getting blown out of proportion; too many people are getting overly attentive of the prospect of attractive dude on attractive dude action, when it's really more about the human connections.

everything i've read about it so far has been really positive, which is great. there have been some good movies this year, especially towards the end.

I want to see this, I hear it is good.

The writers were on NPR last weekend with a funny story.  So when this was first being show, because of the rough nature of the sex the first time the two of them get together, a woman remarked to them that "Men are way too timid with women, why can't they be like that more often."  Her husband just walked away...

Even tho it's fuckin hot.

Once you get past the hotness of Heath Ledger going at it with another man, this story seems really sweet and lovely. I wanted to see it since I heard about it but the only other person who I know would go see it with me is seeing it with his boyfriend. Damn, gotta find some other people to go see the agy cowboys and cry like a baby with me!

There is nakedness of females, including Anne. Not that much, but it is there. But you would probably not be nearly as excited about that if you had seen the Princess Diaries.

That would probably put off a lot of potential dates, the way I see it.

Not because it puts the thought of him being homosexual into their heads, but because they can never live up to Heath Ledger. :P

Yeah, definitely looking forward to m/m action between two of my favorite actors. And a sweet and apparently wrist-slittingly good romance.

My only problem is that every time I think of this movie, I remember when my boyfriend came back from Ireland last June, talking about some spaghetti western he and his friend had seen while drunk, and making up a song along the lines of: "We're all gay cowboys and one of us is black, and one of us is black, and one of us is black!" Repeat ad infinitum.

This thread actually answered a question I've always wondered, but never asked anyone: Do women think gay sex/relationships are hot in the same way that men do about lesbians?

Apparently, the answer is yes. This interests me far more than the movie, because quite frankly I don't watch many movies, and romances are not on the top of my list.

You find it a lot among young anime-loving girls, who like the femboys who make out with other femboys. But also in general, yes.

In high school we used to have gay porn nights, where somewhere around ten of us would gather in one dorm room and watch gay porn alllll night. Woo!
