I like them plenty.
To Rococo Rot
Mouse On Mars
Oren Ambarchi
Rhythm & Sound
De La Soul

They truly make me grumpy when I hear them.
Jurassic 5
Red Hot Chilli Peppers (even beyond their awful, awful songs, I'm sure I've seen threads on the loudness war on here...)
Muse
cLOUDDEAD / Subtle / Themselves (+ whatever other permutation of awful sounding hip-hop for liberal arts college radio nonsense.. give me some Ludacris or TI any day, thanks)
Gorillaz (maybe fish in a barrel, but there's something that annoys me about this lot much more than the NME tedium of the day)

Can do some wrong, actually (but I do like them all).
Mark Hollis / Talk Talk
PJ Harvey
Peaches
Autechre
Aphex Twin

Gone off them a bit or a lot.
Talib Kweli
Mos Def
Radiohead
Destiny's Child (The ubiquity of motherfucking Beyonce has really soured me against her and them.  Sick of no-room-to-breathe ululating over everything...)
The Cure (don't know when this happened, but I basically can't stand anything by them any more, with the exception of a few lighter numbers like Catch and Inbetween Days)

Some compilations that I think are awesome:
Manic Street Preachers - Forever Delayed
The Pogues - The Ultimate Collection
Oasis - The Masterplan
Funeral For A Friend - Seven Ways To Scream Your Name
Pink Floyd - Echoes

Some bands who have only made one great album but I love them even so:
Hope of the States
Rage Against The Machine

Some bands who I love that no-one else seems to have heard of or like that are criminally underrated (and why):
Lucky Nine - British metal supergroup; only made one album, the second one apparently in the works, are fucking awesome, yet no-one knows them
Hundred Reasons - Three great studio albums
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - I only have two of their three albums, but those two are brilliant

I couldn't think of five for half of those lists.

Most people think of compilations as being albums with music by many different artists, not "greatest hits" type packages of a single artist.

It's a big deal.

It's a big deal.

I don't know how you define 'most people.' But the way I see it, those albums are all 'compiled' from different releases rather than being studio albums or live albums.

If you go to wikipedia and look at artist discographies, you will find most of the above releases under 'compilations.' I'd suggest Seven Ways might not because it's a compilation of a b-side and 3/4 of two EPs.

well seeing how i've thought some of sufjan's stuff is fairly terrific, and bright eyes has some mild appeal as well, i'm not so sure if that's true. it's a different musical style. destroyer often finds itself in the sunset rubdown/frog eyes/wolf parade ect. party (swan lake helped this comparison along) but i don't see it....those 3 bands are great but i just can't get into destroyer really, even after listening to destroyer's rubbies a bunch of times....not sure why.

Easy: Destroyer is bland and unengaging (is that a word?).  I'll admit, I was almost impressed with a Sufjan Stevens song, but not quite.

Okay, fine, Built to Spill aren't my favorite band, but I should've added a sidenote saying I like them. I just think they're a bit overrated, which is probably helped by the fact that so many people in my area are in to them (So much that they splooge. Yes, it has become masturbatory.).
Deerhoof will always have a special place in my heart, which may sound pretentious to some. And remember, I think they're awesome. Sorry I didn't state that clearly enough. Although I know I didn't say they were one of the quintessential indie bands. That's a bit, if I may,

BANDS THAT SHOULD HAVE QUIT WHEN THE LEAD SINGER DIED
AC/DC

AC/DC released one of the highest selling albums of all time after the lead singer died, and yes i will concede that some of the mid eighties stuff was...well, complete shite, really, but they have come back with a vengeance recently.

ANYway:

SOME BANDS THAT ARE GOOD
AC/DC
Lamb Of God
Frenzal Rhomb
Nick Cave
sounds Like chicken

SOME BANDS THAT ARE AWFUL
My Chemical Romance
Simple Plan (both of these bands deserve to be poked in the eye with a really hot French fry)
Good Charlotte
Coldplay
Franz Ferdinand

SOME BANDS THAT ARE VASTLY OVERRATED
U2
Tool
Muse
Dream Theater

SOME BANDS THAT I USED TO THINK WERE AWESOME BUT AM NOW SORT OF BURNED OUT ON
Green Day
KISS
The Who
Metallica
The Clash

Do Make Say Think are consistently good but I have a hard time thinking of any of their albums, taken individually, as particularly "great".  Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord is Dead and Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn both come close, though.

Given that, I do think that they have something really incredible in store for the new one, based on the totally awesome title and cover artwork.

having heard it i can say you're right. it's not my favorite i don't think, but it is quite excellent. perhaps a little more accesible? there's even some vocals! part of my including them on the list stems from them being a really fantastic live band. live, the trumpet/sax/drums all become more pronounced, improvisations (minor ones, but they're there) in the aforementioned instruments exists, and often songs will be extended to their benefit. i love their album stuff but live they're even better.

Dang, what's with all the Coldplay hate? Making too much money for you? Not that they don't make too much money, but they just aren't that spectacularly bad. Parachutes was halfway decent, and everything since then hasn't exactly been an offense to the ears.

Anyway, here we go:

SOME ARTISTS THAT ARE SUPER AWESOME
Bjork
Nick Drake
Paul Simon
Sufjan Stevens
Devin Townsend

SOME ARTISTS I ACTIVELY DISLIKE
Broken Social Scene
Telefon Tel Aviv
Cake (after about 10 minutes)
Vic Chesnutt
Pedro the Lion

SOME ARTISTS THAT ARE SIMPLY OVERRATED
Coldplay, I think, goes here
Doves
Muse
Wilco
Billey Joel

SOME ARTISTS THAT WERE COOL THEN, NOT SO MUCH NOW
The Smashing Pumpkins
Our Lady Peace
Pearl Jam
Badly Drawn Boy
Electric Light Orchestra
