I had the last post when this thread died the first time. I remember when that used to happen virtually every time; I would post something, and then the forum abruptly loses interest in the thread. My posts are that repellent

While I appreciate the fact that new users are apparently using the search function, it would be really nice if they check the last post date before they decided to reply to a thread. Any discussion that existed in this thread was probably forgotten considering that it was nearly three years ago when anybody posted.
Sorry actually I was on my cellphone. It does'nt show times or dates.:(

So my friend Max, he was talking about how he was healthy and environmental because he didn't eat meat but he ate fish, since he was a 'presca...? presba....? presbytarian or something!', which is a very characteristic Max moment.
(He is a pescetarian if that term hasn't come up yet)

I got hungry reading the thread, and now I'm disappointed we are talking about terrorists instead of fish.

I like so many kinds of fish, tuna, salmon, cod, lobster, calamari, and I've had jellyfish once.

Does anybody else get really hungry at aquariums? I find it torture.

People go veggie for different reasons. Some health, some environmental and animal conscious, etc. Those that do it for health reasons tend to be fine with fish. Those that do it to help the environment or halt animal cruelty tend to be against eating fish. But then again, there's tons of exceptions. If you're concerned only with the environment, there are brands of fish at your local health food store that are not caught in over fished markets and done environmentally friendly. And there are people that for whatever reason separate fish from land animals on what is ok to harm and kill.

It's probably Biblical reasoning.

Though the one part of the food pyramid is the "Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts Group." You'd think they could just go with "Meat and Meat Alternatives" or something.

i consider myself a vegetarian but i occasionally eat fish.  i became a vegetarian because i'm against animal cruelty and i think factory farms are pretty fucked up for a variety of reasons.  so although i don't like to eat fish that are raised in fish farms i don't feel so bad about eating fresh caught sea food. and i'll be totally honest - i also feel a lot less bad about eating shrimp than i do about eating a baby cow. :P

Tuna is nasty. I once ate a casserole without knowing what kind it was out of politeness and it ended up being tuna. My first instinct was to spit it out, but I had to swallow. If you know what that's like, you know it sucks. One of my friends wants to change my mind by making me a tuna steak, but I am wary.

I like some fish, love shrimp, but not lobster or crab, because I'm weird.

Tuna is totally nasty, it smells horrible and it tastes worse.

I love most forms of seafood but if I eat too much of it I end up absolutely loathing it.

I once found the rare vegetarian fish fillet and I was absolutely amazed. I had to buy it. It was very tasty, actually. I love veggie sushi and it kind of tasted like the nori in that but with a meaty texture. Veggie cooks are magicians, I swear.

I can totally agree with that statement. I just don't understand what the deal with lobster is. Crustaceans in general are not exactly what I'd call a party in my mouth-- if anything, I think they're rather bland, although the texture is OK. It's not so much that I don't like it, it's that I don't understand why some people make such a big deal out of it. Between the lack of flavor, the expense involved and the spectacle of watching people crack the critter open, dismember it and then practically writhe with pleasure as they eat it, it's tough to say that I'm a fan. I mean, really, I've had fast food I've enjoyed more, and I'm actually a really picky eater, so it's all very confusing to me.

So I had some barramundi recently and I don't really get it. It's kinda steakey, but less so than swordfish and it has more of that obnoxious fish taste to it. I'll admit that using barra in a vietnamese dish maybe wasn't the best use of it and a more fish and chips style dish would probably have been more appropriate.

So guys, what is the deal with barramundi?

As far as i can tell it is held in high esteem because it is the most Australian of fish.

If a fish could wear an Australian flag as a cape and bellow the "Aussie Aussie Aussie" chant at the most inappropriate of times, that fish would be barramundi.

Barramundi is lovely!
It is at its best when gently baked and left to stand alone, possibly with a bit of lemon, a bit of pesto, or a bit of balsamic vinegar and honey reduction. We have one on the lunch that is served on a salad of rocket, warm roma tomato, baked pumpkin, crumbled fetta and that gorgeous sticky balsamic dressing. It is very very nice!

The only tuna I like is the tuna-from-a-can
Covered with LOADS of mayo.
Then dipped in mayo.
Then with more mayo =]

And also I think to define meat is anything prepared in a butchers shop
and fish is prepared in....a fish mongers shop?
What is a fish monger anyways?

That first part sounds like the most disgusting thing ever. (See the I'm hungry thread.) And a fish monger is a person who sells fish.

Tonight I had fish! Pineapple and mango crusted tilapia. It was freaking delicious.

Actually, were a thread to be revived over this, I think the best choice would to be to create a truly epic addition to the blind date thread, with Calenlass ravaging an entire Red Lobster's restaurant, eventually leading to the management tasing her with the shotgun from the "Some stupid asshole..." thread while Johnny C and I look on in horror.

What is a fish monger anyways?

Quote from: Oxford English Dictionary: s.v. monger, n.1
Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon mongari, Old High German mangari, mengari, Old Icelandic mangari, prob. directly < classical Latin mang dealer, trader (see MANGO n.2), with substitution of the Germanic base of -ER suffix1 for the Latin agent-noun suffix; cf. also MONG v. With sense 2 cf. Old Saxon flesmongere, Middle High German vleischmanger, Old Icelandic kjöt-mangari butcher.

tl;dr: It's archaic, but "monger" does basically mean "seller."

what the FUCK people

Visitors to a Hampshire aquarium are being greeted by an eerily alien-like smiling face.

People have likened the baby thornback ray's distinctive face to the 'Last Human' featured on Doctor Who. In the BBC series, the last surviving human was reduced to a stretched sheet of human skin with just a pair of eyes and a mouth.

The semi-transparent thornback ray, only a month old and just 12cms in length, is part of a captive breeding programme at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Southsea.

It is one of a dozen, hatched from egg-cases known as 'mermaid's purses', currently being looked after in a special nursery tank.

When they are large enough, they will join the adult thornbacks and several sharks in a large pool. A Blue Reef spokesman said the babies are proving very popular with visitors.

so uh hampshire people, go look at this CUTENESSOMG
