Author Topic: It's a Duck! a bit of a 'toonish logo up for critiquing  (Read 35538 times)

Just wondering if maybe someone here can help me see flaws in this:

http://pics.livejournal.com/fenmere/pic/0003shph

It's a very early sketch of a logo for my favorite ice cream shop.  The owner and I will discuss ways to make it more logo-y, such as maybe by putting a great big "M" on his apron.  And I will be redrawing him on larger paper to clean him up.  Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to make him feel even duckier.

Thanks!

Shop name, or "M" as you say on the apron would be a stellar idea.  Also, I think you did a fab job on the bill.  Only real suggestion I have is the left foot.  It seems a smidge off in comparison.  And possibly some more definition on the waist?  More feather lines or something.

More duckier, you say?

Well, on scales of duckness, I'd say the head looks just fine.  It goes a little awry for me on the body, tho.  For some reason the shape looks a little more akin to a chicken, not a duck.  Change the tail feathers perhaps?  Or maybe go for more brown or grey?  That might make the image too dull in color tho...

Meh, it looks just fine for a logo.  Probably just leave it as is.  It's a cheery, welcoming image, which is just what you want in that kind of thing.

And dammit, now I really want to eat some ice cream.

Thanks guys!  You're confirming a number of my thoughts.  I'll post a revision shortly today.

If it's a logo maybe you should simplify it a little and smooth out the linework. The simpler the better when it comes to logos.

I'd exagerate the "duck" features. Feet, tail, and bill. Just make em all a bit bigger.

If there is a reason for the duck logo (such as the name being McDucky's), then Thats a very good idea. Even if it isn't, duckification is a good idea.

Very nice, and with work, it'll be a good logo.

In addition to what's been said (especially se7en's comment; exaggeration wins):

- don't color-match the apron to the head; I spent a while trying to figure out why his 'gut' was pointy like that
- accentuate the shoulder strap more; or get rid of the new color for the chest feathers, same reason
- don't foreshorten the feet anywhere near that much
- rework where the feathers end (tuft on head, 'hands' and tail) so they're not as spaced out
- scrap the nub where his body is in front of the arm holding the ice cream cone; arms have a top and a bottom
