Lidocaine is used almost universally in the procedure from what I understand, but it's something that is not really talked about much due to the legality of applying non topical anesthetics.

Something I'm reminded of today is how important the tongue is for swallowing. Trying to suck down my normal saliva output is a bit pain inducing and I've been putting off eating for hours now.

Can you get some ice in there to make things less horribly painful? I have some idea of how difficult that is since I got my tonsils out a couple of years ago, but I could still use my tongue then, for the most part.

I still want my tongue split but I wonder if I'll be able to handle the pain of it.

Well, if this follows the same line of progression as it did the first time, most of the outright pain is in the first day, with a week's worth of miserably uncomfortable days following. It's also been something that I'd highly recommend for those interested simply for how much I've enjoyed having it. It's been we'll worth the relatively small periods of pain and discomfort.

I want mine done, but I am terrified of the pain.  I know conceptually that I could take it; I am tougher than I tend to give myself credit for.  However, I get anxious about pain and it is the anxiety of it I fear.  I was never able to skateboard because I was too afraid of the pain of falling, even though I endure equal amounts of pain all the time.

I think i I ever successfully did a suspension I could seriously think about getting my tongue done.  I am terrified of the pain from a suspension, but I feel like the nature of the procedure places less pressure to follow through which would make it easier for me I think.

The more I've thought about it, if it wasn't for my job, I would be covered in piercings. I've fallen in love with them in the last few months. Although it is easier to say I would do it when I don't actually have the option. If I had the option I might chicken out but right now, I really want more holes in my face.

I am actually way sadder than I thought I would be.  Like, he has been ill for a long time, and knew he would not make it to old age, and I never met him personally, though I did attend a BME-BBQ once, I didn't speak with him there.  I figured it would be the sort of distanced, impersonal sadness you feel when a famous person dies, but instead I actually want to have drinks, and talk about "the good old days" of BME and maybe cry.

Unfortunately, because of Shannon's influence, Stephen is in no shape to have drinks with me right now.

Yeah, I didn't expect to be this saddened by it. I'd been keeping up with him on his blog for years after the whole IAM/BME... incident, and I knew he wasn't going to be around that much longer. I'd only ever spoken to him once, online, and he misunderstood what I said and took it as an insult. So I certainly didn't know him well at all, and he for sure did not know me. But he and his site had a huge impact on my life, especially my willingness to be open about who I am and what I like. I can't even fully articulate what I'm trying to say here.

It makes me even more sad that the IAM forums are so dead now.

Well, as a slightly less depressing bit of news, because we all know my whining and complaining is important...

So I have apparently managed to get water in my ears somehow. When I lay down, both ears will start to experience a sharp pain, though the right ear is much worse. If I lay on my right side, which is how I usually sleep, it becomes incredibly intense and lasts for hours. Until I finally decided to take a couple of Benadryl and slept on my left side, I wasn't getting more than 2 or 3 hours of sleep. At this point, I'm just hoping I avoid getting an ear infection, or at least postpone it until after the stitches for my tongue are out.

Yup. Fruit smoothies, potato leek soup (so much potato leek soup), pudding, some broth soups, Apple sauce, popsicles and I'm trying to decide if grits or oatmeal would be as bad as I suspect if they are cooled after cooking.

The main issue I have with a lot of the stuff I've been eating is they're just not very filling, especially for the effort I have to put in to eat them. Sadly, I think this was what I considered the worst part about healing it last time as well. I'm absolutely open to suggestions.

Thanks :D I can't wait to wear normal jewelry in it!

What I did when I was recovering from my tonsillectomy was find a lot of drinks with a higher calorie count. Protein shakes are especially good, if you can stomach them. Stuff that body builders use for muscle building. Anything to keep your energy up will help you heal faster and get you back to eating normally.

Also, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and slurpees/slushies.

In all honesty, you could puree a tuna melt.  I had my jaw wired shut for nearly three months when it was broken, through thanksgiving and christmas - which led to the tune, "Turkey through a straw" - and would often drop in a steak-and-shake burger.

It tasted no different than when whole.

I actually gained 5 popunds with the jaw wired shut.  First time the doctor'd ever seen it happen.

I've been thinking about my next tattoo, and I think I want to get some graphic along with the words "I believe in no god, I believe in science" or "I hold no god or master above myself" or "nullos deos, nulla dominis" (latin, possibly incorrect, for "no gods, no masters") because I want to never be invited to more than one pool party with Jess's family.

It was, for maybe a day or two. Now I'm used to it. The beads in that picture are a bit too large, as well - the barbell I'll be wearing when it's healed is shorter and has smaller beads, and won't be so noticeable to me.

Sop my wife says no more tattoos for me until she gets hers. I got a big TARDIS a couple of years ago to cover up some ugly old punk rock tats and she is going to get the key. She was going to get it done by the same guy who did the TARDIS, a friend of mine in Denver but he seems to have fallen off the earth.

He had been working to get his 81% patch for a few years and I think he finally got in and now exclusively works in the clubhouse. Don't know as he has vanished, but that is my guess.

Interesting learning during my research for my Japan trip, I knew I had the potential for problems with my ink in Japan, with it's connections to organized crime in their culture that's a no brainer, but it is apparently illegal to display tattoos any where in Kobe. So that's one major beach area where I could get arrested for taking my shirt off.

Well since this isn't actually a tattoo thread, but a general body modification thread, I guess this goes here.

I REALLY want some Neodymium Implants. The whole sixth sense it gives you is just too awesome, I want in on it.

Problem: I'm terrified of surgery and I don't handle excessive physical pain well. Considering how minimally invasive it is, I'd power through it, but I've been told that it hurts like nothing else unless you're adequately drugged up, and its not legal to use that stuff for implants like what I want.

Just hoping someone can shed some light on this.

Stephen made an attempt, but they rejected.  I am sure another attempt is coming.

As far as numbing agents being illegal, if you are paying someone to do this it is likely illegal anyways.  If you are doing it on your own, tthe larger risk is probably it reducing your own ability (since you need your hands to do the cutting, insertion and sealing).
