I guess this is a thread for talking about tattoos and showing off the ones you have.

I want to have a tattoo on my ring finger. Is that done? On fingers at all, I guess I mean.

It's a rare thing, I imagine, but not impossible.  You mean like a ring tattoo?

I have a kanji tattoo on my right shoulder (yeah, not hip, sue me) that translates more or less to anti-war.  I want to get a tattoo of the caffeine molecule done but I'm not so sure where.  The Hate Song skull would be awesome as a tattoo.

Sure you can get em there!

Wee rough paramiliaties back home tend to have LOVE and HATE written on their fingers. Some also like to get tats of swallows on their necks and wrists. Ahh the paras.

I tend to see finger tats as a paramilitary scum thing, but then again thats cause thats what I'm used to.

When I was younger and still into Yu-Gi-Oh I wanted an Obelisk the Tormentor tattoo on my right shoulder and a Slyfer the Sky Dragon one on my left.  I no longer want those and I am thankful my mom was as strict as she was

Actually, that's the day I took off the bandage. It's a bit smotted, my up-keeps are free however, so I'm gonna go in after my midterms and get a bit of the paler parts evened out. Eug did a good job though.

im getting my fave buddhist mantra tattoo'ed across the small of my back soon ..... the bit across my spine will hurt like a mother fucker but oh well! It's more of a private thing for my eyes only (i never wear midriff/small of my back showing clothing) and it's discreet enough to hide when i have to be all corporate so yeah im pretty excited about it! Just gotta get the cash and get my many times tattooed toy boy to accompany me and let me squeeze his hand

As soon as I get some money (which may be a while) I'm going to get half-sleeves with a bunch of different song lyrics wrapping around my arm. I've never really seen or thought of a picture I liked enough to get tattooed, but there's a lot of song lyrics I really like.

Nuh-uh, no way, and no-how.

I'd quite like one, actually, and I really don't give a damn about the pain, but I'm not going to get it because of my dad.

I respect his opinion, see, and his is rather more informed than most. The first five years of his career as a surgeon were spent performing tattoo excisions and skin grafts. He kind of has a deep-rooted contempt for them, and I would rather not have a guilty secret to keep from him.

I have always had an idea in my head of getting a Greek Lambda on the top of my right shoulder. The implication behind it would be that the Spartan hoplites would wear a Greek Lambda on their shields to represent Lacedamia, the peninsula of Greece where Sparta was situated. As you can tell from my user name I'm quite into the whole ancient Greece thing.

However, I know that I will never get one. A tattoo used to be something original and something unique. It was also something that had particular meaning to the person who wore it. Now though it's common. Every other person has a tattoo. More often than not some Chinese symbol which they believe means something to do with hope or love or eternity or something else just as vomit enducing. Either that or some tribal design down their arms or legs. It seems almost as if the whole idea of getting a tattoo has become passe and common.

I feel like I am almost more original not having a tattoo.

I've wanted a tattoo for several years now, but there are two things stopping me.

1. I'm still not old enough to actually get one (Only a couple weeks now).
2. I've never been able to decide what I actually want done, I keep seesawing between a couple of designs.

EDIT: Clarified points after reading nickb285's reply.

I think it depends on what you get. For example, if you're one of the thousands of 18- and 19-year-old girls who get a star tattooed on their ankle/hip, or a tribal design around your upper arm, then yeah, it's a bit cliche and unoriginal. But if you get something that has meaning to you, I don't think it's passe. I just figure, if you decide to get a tattoo before you think of something you want, it's probably a bad idea.

You should get it on the side of your leg so that people will see it under the bathroom stall.  Every time people see it they'll be thinking, "? indeed.  Who is that?"

I drew and inked a gryphon I'd been planning to get tattooed for my 18th birthday, but due to a combination of lack of funds and lack of balls I never actually got it done. That and I haven't decided where I want it yet.

You can still see it here though. I hope I can get it soon, I'm really pretty proud of the drawing so it would be a shame for it to go to waste.

Tatoos are just way too permanent for me. I guess it's telling of my fear of commitment. I just can't think of anything that I could live with for the rest of my life. Perhaps I should look at it this way: I could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Nah. Nevermind. No tats. Piercings FTW!

I couldn't agree more.
To add to that, I often find that people tattoo religious symbols on their body without actually really believing in it. I am not a religious person, but I respect other people's beliefs and wearing a religious symbol for vain reasons seems very disrespectful to me.

That said, what also bothers me is that amount of people getting tattoos done that are small and not visible in addition to being generic. If you want to get a tattoo, make it count.
As such, I am fascinated by tattoos though and if I see someone wearing a unique tattoo, I lusually ike it a lot (as in: not your generic tribal motive/pitbull/anchor/whatever). And if I could think of a something I really believe in and that I would most likely still believe in 20 years, I would get it tattooed. Preferrably a large tattoo, possibly covering an arm and the shoulder.

I have a celtic knot on the base my spine and seriously, it doesn't hurt nearly as much as people will tell you it does. Hopefully the tattooist will make you lean over something to stretch your spin to the max and that makes it a LOT more comfortable. Just try to relax, and not tense your muscles. If your tattooist doesn't have a radio playing try taking a CD player and when it gets uncomfortable just concentrate really hard on the lyrics instead of the pain, it's a great distraction!

I don't like straight edge tattoos. Though I should probably elaborate - I don't like when teenagers get straight edge tattoos. It drives me nuts. It's like getting someone's name tattooed on yourself except A MILLION TIMES WORSE.
A good friend of mine is planning out a huge straight edge chest piece for himself, and everytime he talks about it I feel nauseous. He's been edge for about 3 years now, has "broken" edge like 4 times and at the tender age of 19 is making a huge expensive commitment that will sit there on his chest for his ENTIRE LIFE. Getting your husband or wife's name tattooed is already a big enough commitment, but even straight edge lately isn't so much a commitment as a lame trend that just fits hand-in-hand with being "scene". Hell, even I was "edge" (Argh! I hate that word.) for a year. When you're a kid and you're keeping up with what's cool, getting inked and making a commitment for your entire life as major as NO ALCOHOL, OR DRUGS, OR CIGARETTES, OR FOOLING AROUND, EVER AGAIN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE just seems.. well, irresponsible. When you're a teenager, how can you even make a commitment like that? Even if I was edge, I'd wait until I had been for a good 10 years or so at least before I did something like that.

In ten years I can picture him saying it's either because he really likes this movie or because he really likes porn.

Part of me disagrees with the whole idea that a tattoo is always should be deep and meaningful.  The Greeks and Romans painted up their pottery for the most part so it wasn't just a boring tan colour yet some of it has lasted hundreds of years.  I'm pretty sure my skin won't last that long.

I'm gunna get my mums name tatooed on my right arm.
Kind of like saying "I know you went through a lot of pain giving birth to me, maybe i can go through some for you."

Then after a little while im going to get one on my inner thigh which says "What are you looking here for bitch, dick's that way" and an arrow going up to my crotch.

Just in case you were wondering, that was a joke.

I'll never get a tattoo most likely. If I did, though, it'd have to be a self-designed 'L'. Just because. Also, I suppose you could call me straightedge - no drinks, cigs, or drugs for me. I'll be sexin' when the time's right, of course, but not anytime soon.

I always wanted one on the bottom of my foot. I almost always wear striped stockings so it wouldn't be too visible. I wouldn't know what to get though. Everything would seem stupid later, so I figure I would just label it "foot" it will always be my foot.

Or maybe spirals on my elbows so I could be a cartoon.

That's actually a perfect statement of why I'd like a useless tattoo instead of a useless hulk of metal. It's a seal with the same amount of meaning, or possibly even more - you can't just take it off. It can't be stolen, that's good, too.

I think people should only do things to themselves if it makes them happy. That is a silly idea, if they are really ugly feet, noone needs to be told. Mine would be useful in case I ever have childern and need to teach them to read and learn body parts. Foot isn't meaningful to me, so I wouldn't really have foot on my foot.

My friend recently got a great big (about 3x5) half American/half German flag on his chest... If you know about his german/american heritage it makes sense, but otherwise he just looks kind of neo-nazi. I think that even if a tattoo means something deep to the person getting it, having it easily mistaken for something completely opposite it is not great.

I was considering for the longest time getting something really small on my left hip; either a heart, a star, or something else really small. (the left one because I am left-handed). I like my hips and thought it would make a cute accent. My only concern is that it's dangerously close to my lower stomach, and whenever I decide to have kids, I'd be concerned about it stretching out. That's the only thing stopping me at this point.

I know what you mean about stretchyness heather .... my friend always tells the horror story of the woman who got a strawberry tattooed onto her breast which in later life more resembled a chilli :S I think placement is the hardest thing for me when deciding on my tattoo to be cause I want somewhere that is discreet (I'm going into either Law or Politics so visible tatts are a no) won't get stretched and won't hurt like hell (plus that tatt that im getting cant be tattoo'd below my waist cause thats disrespectful)

That has me thinking, getting "left" and "right" done on each foot would be amusing.

I share that sentiment.  They can take your boots and teeth but not your skin and designs you put on it.  Unless they pull some sort of Bufflo Bill crazyness.
