Basically what I want (need to fix the yellow bit of the wing on the black and white images), line art, not too sure if I want it coloured. I can't draw so it's kinda hard to plan it out. Any advice regarding planning it further? I kinda want to replace the bird on the right with this but I'd have to change the perspective and scale a lot I guess, plus I've been wanting the above images for almost a year now. But it is closer to tattoo reality!

I guess if I was you I would take it in to a shop and tell them what it is that you want. Bring in the three pictures and they should be able to figure something out. It IS their job, after all. They know what they can and can't do.

You can always take someone with you for moral support! They are just as weird as you are, I bet. (That is meant to be a compliment!)

A VERY bad pic --but my Mom's VERY FIRST tattoo!! (And before anyone says anything: I didn't approve of taking off the bandage before advised and I also don' t approve of using PAPER TOWEL and SCOTCH TAPE as a bandages...grrr...), but I do think that her artist did a very nice job. My Mom really likes it.

Nah, yeah dude, I'm Maori. Half Maori and half Aussie. I actually have no problem with non-Maori wearing a Ta-Moko on any part of their body, as long as it details their own geneology and isn't lifted from someone else's Moko, a Maori chief for example. I have even less of a problem if someone decides to get a kirituhi (Skin Art/Alternative to the traditional Ta-Moko). Although mana, like you said has a part of it, for me it's more about identity. Especially since a Ta-Moko is pretty much the detailing of their history.
Sweet, didn't mean ta lecture you then :D

Totally agreed. I'm getting my 5th tattoo next week and the only one I went alone for was my second. It's good for you to have some familiarity and someone to shoot the shit with while you're getting done, and your friends get to see you in pain, so they probably won't need much convincing to come along!

Ooh, what are you getting?

It's a chest tattoo- chances are he's taking it using a mirror.

Which means it still deserves an explanation but isn't backwards.

Someone else having it isn't necessarily a reason not to get the tattoo--if anything, a tattoo as inherently silly as that is aided by the fact that it truly is a marker of a certain lifestyle.  Not unlike the gang tattoos it resembles, actually.

Anyway, guys, I really like the way sleeve tattoos look, and I think I'd like to get one in a year or two.  How do I go about finding original sleeve artwork?  Do I need to talk to people who have sleeves done and meet some artists?  I don't have very many friends with tattoos; how do you get to know tattoo artists in your area?  Would it be silly of me to have a half or full sleeve be my first tattoo (i.e. should I get something else, smaller, somewhere else first?)?

Do you have any idea what you'd like the image to be based around, or even what kind of style you want it in? A good tattoo artist will design something for you for a deposit but they'll need something to go on, otherwise the chances of them coming up with something you're going to want permanently on your body are slim to none. You can get to know tattoo artists in your area by just finding out what tattooists are local (google it or ask on forums) and then just wander in. Tell them what you're thinking of getting done, ask to see their book of tattoos and if they'll answer some questions. Any tattooist that isn't happy to just have a chat with you (when they've got a few minutes) or who doesn't do custom and only works in flash is not a tattooist you want to be working on your body anyway.

As for getting a half or full sleeve as your first tattoo, so long as you talk through with your tattooist what exactly it will involve and you're sure about the design then I say go for it. If there's something small you'd like done as well then it might be an idea to get that first just so you've got a better idea of what you're getting into but if not don't be too worried. It's your tattoo, if you want it get it.

This is the only tattoo I've got.  I've been considering expanding on it for a bit now but can't seem to get it worked out in my head.  I was thinking background of some type then spreading up and over my shoulder (this is on my right shoulder) into a spring/summer/fall type tree tattoo on my right shoulder blade.

EDIT:  if anyone has some suggestions of how to get the pattern/shape of the fish from my shoulder to a piece of paper I'd love you for forever.

I agree completely.
Most people need to look at it for about 10 seconds to figure out what's going on.
Color would make it a lot more coherent, and I love colorful tattoos.

Yes. Yes you may.

Most painful tattoo I've had so far (out of this, my chest and three on my bicep), and I'm still feeling a bit woozy...

Sorry about the scummy looking photo, but it was taken in a mirror, and it's obviously still fresh and thus a little bloody, even though I washed it when I got home.

Booked in for another session two weeks from now. Probably going to get something Bill Hicks-related added to my arm. I'm thinking a line portrait of him (not like a full-on realistic portrait tattoo, but something more like this), with the words "Cursed With Vision" written below it on a scroll thingy.

I'm guessing it's a satire of Tupac's "Thug Life" tattoo that he had.  Also, that's the symbol of the rebel alliance (Star Wars episodes IV-VI) in the middle there, offered, I assume, as proof of geekhood.

I think its just an mildly ironic expression of the person's love with being a geek, rather than something like Thug Life. Course I'm talking out my ass here, is that more or less the gist of it?

I'm sure there are more elsewhere.

But yeah, it's just a Parody tattoo that amuses the wearer to no end.

I want a cute geeky girl type tattoo, and by god I can't think of one! I already have one tattoo, a small fox on my lower back.

If you can't think of something geeky that you like, should you really be getting a geeky tattoo at all? Just food for the thought.

I was thinking about them myself yesterday, when working out my future tattoo plans. I have no idea what I'd get, because for the most part I dislike abstract pattern or tribal tattoos.

White ink can kill you!!! As can UV-Ink, actually.

There are VERY FEW artists --GOOD, REPUTABLE artists that will do total white-ink tattoos.
(And even at that: they don't usually have good staying power, I hear. They fade out rather easily).

(Wow, I lurk at the Inked Nation forums waaaaay to much...)

I have heard bad things about UV ink, but why the hell would normal white ink be worse for you? It's used in tons of tattoos as accents.
Oh and I am pretty much ok with it fading out, the POINT in getting it all white would be subtlety instead of garishness.

To be honest, I'm not completely sure. I'll dig up some information on it.
I think it's OK to use it a little bit, but you're more likely to get irritation and color rejection doing a completely white tattoo... Let me go check.

And if you're OK with it fading, why get a tattoo at all? They cost too much money to let them fade out.

Edit:
This wasn't really helpful, but: http://tattoos.lovetoknow.com/White_Ink_Tattoos

Anyway, white ink is different from the color/black ink at any rate. Maybe I exaggerated. They just have no staying power at all.

Just promise me that NO ONE here is even THINKING about  UV-tattoo... Those WILL kill you. The pigments have been known to cause cancer. I want to smack all of these people on Yahoo!Answers who say they're "cool"... Ugh.

UV tattoos are cool. They look neat.

Also, what tattoo isn't going to fade at least a little? If you want your tattoos to look constantly fresh, then you are going to have to constantly reink them. I mean, I realize that they shouldn't fade quickly, but they will fade eventually.

White ink tattoos are great. I think they look nice.
