If you have the patience for it, go for the piercing and gradual stretching. It will probably smell bad and ache a lot when you go up a size, but that is what tapers and taking it slow are for.
Scalpeling feels like cheating to me, but hey. Also it bleeds a lot.

From the time between last night and now I've decided that piercing and gradual stretching are the best way to go. I've looked up a fuckton of info about the whole process and everthing today and general opinion seems to be is that go slow or shit's gonna get fucked up bad apparently. Hygene's not going to be an issue since I have a near OCD issue with personal hygene.

Any idea what you're goal size is?

There's also the issue that many artist who offer services that involve a scalpel aren't exactly 100% open about it. They may advertise the hell out of their services on something like Modblog, BME or IAM, but there's no guarantee they'll tell you they perform such a service over the phone. It's sketchy legal territory.

I think my goal size is going to be 0g-00g. Maybe on the 00g. For now anyway.

And yeah, I figure stretching is a more natural way of doing it which just equals less bad shit going down. Well that's what it equals in my head anyway.

Stretching is an interesting process, and you get a certain satisfaction every time you go up a size.  I know this isn't true in your case, Camus, but for a mod-addict, stretching up is generally cheaper than new piercings and can delay the craving for them.  It's also a good way to figure out what suits you.

You should wait at least two weeks between stretches, and I personally recommend at least three weeks past 4 gauge.  That story is a pretty good one.  If you stretch too fast, your best case scenario is scarring ("cat ass?") and blowout, and the worst case scenario is...well, that.

With shit like this I'm a total pussy, by nature I'm gonna take it slow and after looking up pictures of fucked lobes all day I don't see myself rushing it at all. Thanks for all the input guys. Now I've just got to bring my girlfriend around to the idea.

Actually, one of the interesting things about scalpeling is that it tends to heal really really well and quickly. Ears also tend to be a little stretchier afterwards.

Of course the downside is that if you get someone who doesn't know what they're doing, you run some pretty serious risk of them fucking up and your lobe going necrotic. Those were some fun pictures. >_<

I feel like we should cut the last like...page and a half of all this piercing talk and make a new thread..
'cause you know...this is the tattoo thread...not the general bodymod thread...

Anyway, as per the current topic, I really want to get my eyebrow pierced, but I can't because my job doesn't allow facial pericings (which is total BS because two of my CSM's have it done, and wear them to work occasionally). I would get an industrial piercing or something, but I would be worried about sleeping on it funny...not to mention I would look pretty silly with a bar in my ear. I'm just not the piercing-type I guess. I don't have the right face for it (...oh wow, that's gonna get me some snide comments, I can just feel it --but you know what I mean).

Actually we should probably just rename the thread "The Tattoo/Bodymod Thread" or something like that so we can talk about all this stuff in one thread. I really don't think we need separate threads for both topics.

It turned into the bodymod thread a while back, I think it was decided that it was sensible.

Has anyone seen corset piercing? I think it looks amazing, but it's so time-consuming and doesn't last at all. Have a look at these, they look quite painful in places but very amazing.

Yeah, I think we talked about those a while back and how impractical they are because you can only keep them in for a few weeks at most, and they typically reject... It kind of turned into an argument, if i recall.

Yes, I saw lots of pictures of them rejecting, it looks painful. There was some mention of someone who had the rings in for nine months or so, though.

Anyway if there was an argument, I shall not press this subject

I don't see why it's an argument. Sometimes they last and sometimes they don't. Most of the time they don't, they're usually considered a temp-piercing, but I've seen people with them for over a year.

Some people can heal anything

Seriously, have you guys seen the inner cheek/eyelid piercings? And the cervix piercing, not to mention sub clavicle. Oh and that guy with the huge spike through the space RIGHT BESIDE his Achilles tendon that he HANGS from.

Depends on where you are, but generally it's 18. I'd argue that any shop in the US that will tattoo you under the age of 18 should probably be avoided anyways.

I saw a hymen piercing earlier, which to be honest gave me the willies a little, I can't figure out why as I've seen a lot worse but it just looked so damn painful.

I decided some time ago that when I get down to a UK size 8, I will get corset piercings from my neck down to just above the tattoo on the base of my back. Getting to a size 8 isn't likely to happen but it's a bit of motivation for me to do it. I do want to get some microdermals down my cleavage, from the madison position and down between my boobs, maybe to the base of my sternum. Depends how much they hurt, I guess.

I've got my ears at 00 and they only smell when they don't get cleaned. I spent nearly a year stretching them from 4mm to 9.5mm so pretty damned slowly.
I'd like some cartilidge piercings but I don't really have the time or the patience to heal them. So I won't.

It says in the interview that there was no pain, only a deep pressure. Good luck finding a piercer though!

I dunno how many people would disagree with me here but I would suggest you don't get any tattoos until you're at least 18. God only knows how many times I changed my mind about everything as a teenager, imagine those changes permanently emblazoned on your skin. Yeah, wait.

I agree with the minimum age of 18 to get a tattoo. I don't currently have any tattoos (though several ideas for some), and my mother has always said I may get a tattoo without her complaining, as long as I'm 21. I figure that's fine with me because if it's going to be on my body for the rest of my life, I'd like a few years to contemplate it.

See, I am basically the opposite of you, Ms. kitkat. I am the type of person who can make an immediate decision about something and so far I haven't regretted anything. I keep hoping sometime I'll mess up so at least I'll have a good story, but to no avail. I just got my monster half-sleeve started, and a few of the older people I've shown were all "THAT WILL BE THERE FOREVER" and I am all "okay yes that is kind of the point!"

When I was in high school the tattoo that I wanted the most was a Pixies logo. It was the P with a circle around it, and lightning bolts on the sides of it. It wasn't OMG I LOVE THE PIXIES SO MUCH as it was they were at the time this huge part of my life, and people from my hometown always related that band with me. I never got that tattoo, but I'm positive today that had I gotten it when I was 15, I wouldn't regret it now (I'm 22). Even if it was just that I really liked that band, it would have just ended up representing that time in my life.

Back to my monster half-sleeve though... I finally got it! There's still more work to do as the monsters' eyes aren't colored in, and the lines right now are all at the same weight. I felt bad for my tattooist though since I twitch a lot while being tattooed. Woo anxiety! I love that it's just outlines though- right now it looks like I'm just embossed since it's scabbed over so nicely.

I'm sure there are some out there who could handle the responsibility of a tattoo at a younger age, but 18 is old enough to know better (and young enough to not care, haha).
On a similar note, I am really sick of people asking me "What are you gonna do when you're 80, blah blah blah". I want to smack 'em and "Who says I'm living to be 80 in the first place?"...but this usually happens when I have to "play nice", so I can't...argh.

Anyhoo, I saw my artist the yesterday (which was perfect timing to get his new card for his new shop). I am getting the tattoo itch again... I am thiiiiinking about starting my other leg, and getting my Gambit soon... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... And I am having conflicting ideas on the placement for my Deathly Hallows...

Ok, so here is the best picture I've ever managed to take of my current mods.

My ears are currently at 3, and I'm vaguely thinking of stretching my septum a little. When I first got these spirals, I thought they were so huge. Now they don't seem like anything. I want to go bigger now, but I still need to wait a bit for these to set up. I originally wanted to go to 0, but that is looking quite small now. I'm not sure how big will be too big. As of right now, I don't want them super huge, but everything seems so small the larger I go.

I'm also considering getting a tattoo on my neck. Probably of an octopus. I've heard that neck tattoos are more expensive, though. I was quoted $180 for a moderately sized back piece. Does anyone know if it'll be much more than that for my neck? Is it really more expensive?

I got them from my piercer. They are hand carved, and made out of stone, which is probably why they are odd.

As for an octopus tattoo, I am thinking something more along the lines of these:

1
2
3

With maybe some bubbles or ink coming out.

With how the guage sizes work, i really think it should be dropped and go straight to mm. Save a hell of a lot of confusion about sizes and stretching.

I'm also considering getting a tattoo on my neck. Probably of an octopus. I've heard that neck tattoos are more expensive, though. I was quoted $180 for a moderately sized back piece. Does anyone know if it'll be much more than that for my neck? Is it really more expensive?

Yes, because most states require and severely inhibit licensure for doing neck tattoos. Not all tattoo artists can legally or even skillfully do neck tattoos. It's considered a very dangerous spot to do them. Since the demand tends to increase the supply of ready, willing and able artists, prices go up.

I don' think I've ever heard of anyone requiring a license to do a neck tattoo, nor that it's anymore dangerous than any other area to tattoo. I do know it's definitely a difficult spot to work on, which is part of the price increase, but it's certainly not any more dangerous. Most shops I know of are just simply more cautious about doing highly visible work on folks they don't personally know. Charging more is partially a way of weeding out people they really don't care to work on.

Much like how most piercer's charge a lot more for genital work despite several genital piercings being very very simple.

The way I've heard it for years is that state governments tend to regulate tattoos above the collar. I couldn't tell you the reasoning behind it, be it safety or the fact that it's highly visible. I've been told by artists from NH, NY (The guy who did my knot is based in Utica) and RI that there are regulations on it.

Either way, I don't tend to recommend them to anyone who ever wants a particularly professional career. A lot of jobs have relaxed standards on certain tattoos and piercings as they've become more a social norm, but a highly visible and difficult to cover tattoo such as a neck piece is the swiftest ticket to acceptance of a life outside the professional sector. Most employers still have a "no visible tats" rule (Which is why I don't plan to venture any further than half sleeves, myself).
