Now that's a good song.

Agalloch - ...And The Great Cold Death of the Earth

This band is just insane.

"Earth is floating on the waters like an island,
Hanging from four rawhide ropes
Fastened at the top of the Sacred four directions.
The ropes are tied to the ceiling of the sky,
When the ropes break, this world will come
Tumbling down...and all living things...will fall with it...and DIEEEEE. . ."

1349 - Riders of the Apocalypse

I'm trying to construct a proper 6/6/06 mix, on the theme of Satans armys stomping the crap out the world and general 666ness. So far I've got:

Mercyful Fate - Come to the Sabbath
Nazgul - Thrashers From Hell
Tankard - 666 Packs
Cryptic Wintermoon - Supersatan
Grave - Soulless
Venom - Heavens on Fire
Anaal Nathrakh - Genesis of the Antichrist
1349 - Riders of the Apocalypse
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast

I've also nearly got headbanging whiplash.

King Crimson - Pictures Of A City

You know, that song gets a lot of unfair comparisons to "21st Century Schizoid Man". Not that it's unfair to note the similarities between them, because they are cut from the same mold. The problem though is that people always rail on "Pictures of a City" as if it were a failed recreation, when I have always considered it to be a great improvement on the original formula. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and say that, in comparison to a lot of their other material (including the early period), the whole of In the Court... is pretty weak. Also, about live DEP, you're not missing anything, in my personal experience (which has outside verification), they just get worse and worse each tour.

I think Pictures Of A City fits in In The Wake Of Poseidon just like 21st Century Schizoid Man fits into In The Court.. They're both great songs, and they both have pretty much the same role in the album they're in. But we need to look at the album itself, and not just start to pick every song by itself (although, every song in both of these albums, other then Peace - A Theme and Peace - An End, can stand alone).
About DEP, I heard a lot about their kick-ass live shows. This is the first time I hear somthing bad about it.

Do I count as outside verification here?

I've seen them atleast half a dozen times at this point, and it really has just been a downhill run.  They still put on more of a show than most bands, and if you like their music and haven't seen them live, it's probably still worth seeing atleast once.  But it's just not the show it used to be.  Even with the new singer blowing fire or whatever, it seems like the band has just lost some steam.  This would be fine if it meant a better musical performance, but I've actually been appalled to see their live performances decrease in technical quality.  It's really kind of frustrating to see that happen to a band.

Well maybe I just caught some bad shows or something. The first time I saw them, I thought it was great, but not any time afterwards. I might be biased though, because I like DEP less than I used to overall. Their attempts to be Nine Inch Nails on Miss Machine really got on my nerves.

I thought DEP were complete shit when I saw them live. I mean, fair enough, I don't like their music and had only gone to that show for Ephel Duath, but man. Gotta say though, a lot of that was just the crowd being complete shit. Lots of kids copying hardcore dance 'moves' they'd half-glimpsed in Atreyu videos. So much fucking windmilling. The band absolutely failed to grab me in any way, means or form however. Sure, they seemed to have a lot of energy, but little does that matter if your musics just a spastic load of shite.

Most annoying thing was my best mate held the opinion that his music taste was heavier and more hardcore than mine for ages after that because I didn't like DEP, and that this made him somehow better than me.

I made him give up on that shit when he started liking the goddamn Postal Service.
