I was inspired to start this after we hijacked the Stuff You've Made thread.

Descent is a dead game, unfortunately (Interplay, its creator, has ceased to exist), but it was one of the best games I ever played on the computer.

Any other Descent lovers out there?

I only ever had the demo . . . But I played that over, and over, and over again.

Damn those 3-D maps take some getting used to, though.

I just got too lost to enjoy it after a while.

But it was hella cool, especially "in the day." so many awesome details, like splashing lava on people with laser fire...and the mighty, mighty vulcan cannon.

I really enjoyed the first one right up until I reached the first boss (level 7, I think.)  Maybe I just suck, but I could never beat that guy.  After about a week circling his lair and being chased by those damn green pellets-o-death, I stopped playing the game.  Never played the sequels.

We used to have Descent I, but I don't know what happened to it. We have only II & 3.

I finished Descent 3 only with cheat codes, so I'm eager to set up my old computer so I can go back through it the right way. (Descent II won't install on XP as it was written for the 95 platform, and Descent 3 stops working towards the end of the game.) Hopefully Windows 2000 will be old enough for the both of them.

I got Decent bundled with my old packard bell Pentium 75 MHz. What I managed to get through was awesome.

I liked Freespace better, no idea why.

Freespace was even awesomer than the original Descent series, in whatever way that is possible. Such a fucking shame THQ won't buy the license from the now-defunct Interplay, though. What is wrong with those people?

Freespace = most awesome space game ever. Especially FS2. Watching a pair of two-kilometre-long capital ships tear each other apart with beam cannons is at least seven types of cool. I was completely in awe when I saw the GTVA Colossus the first time, and the SJ Sathanas (which I took my screen name from) was utterly beastly.

Also, I think I heard somewhere that THQ is trying to get the Freespace license, and confirmation of such would completely rock my world.

Okay, I feel left out now. I've actually never heard of Freespace. *prepares to be assassinated* Can anyone give minor details?

Long story short, the developer of Descent split into two companies: one that continued to do Descent games, while the other created Freespace, a series related to Descent but, well, in free space instead of clausterphobic tunnels.

Mmmm...Freespace.

Never mind that it has nothing to do with Descent whatsoever.  It's a damn fine piece of work.

Volition = win.

I love D1/D2 and that is pretty much the only kali server still alive and kicking. [YES I still use kali...hell I still play d1/d2!]

I've always used mouse and keyboard, since I've never owned a joystick at all.

I had a nice Thrustmaster joystick/throttle combo for Freespace. Separate throttle, too, not integrated, which was nice. Then the damned thing died on me.

The Saitek X52 is what I want, though.

I just installed my new Windows 2000 computer in my bedroom, along with Descent 3! Descent 2 wouldn't install because the installation program tells me that it has to run on Windows 95, boo. (It's strange, since it didn't give me that error message on XP - it just wouldn't finish instaling)

Soon as the weekend comes (and I hook up some speakers), I'm tearing into that game. Whoo!

I hope that was a long time ago.  Descent 2 is free now.  Hell, there's even an OSX port.

Why aren't I playing it right now?  I downloaded it over a year ago, but I have yet to play it.
