YOU ALL NEED TO SEE THIS!!!

This is perhaps one of the greatest things ever! http://www.pandora.com go to that website and follow along. Make an account and don't worry about any of the information they ask for. If however you don't want to use your own zip code, or, like me, you live outside the US, just use this one: 94043. Nobody will mnd if you use this, because it's the zip code for the google campus in california. It's a music genome project, and with a small amount of input you give the system, it customizes a playlist to your likings. It is absolutely fantastic and free. You can't download the music, but you do have the option to buy the album from amazon, or download from iTunes. I extremely highly recomend that you guys heck this out, you will not regret it one bit, but instead may give me praises that a god would normally receive.

Khar, you don't love me? I think I'll go slowly weep in a corner. But I promise you there won't be tears.

A guy I know is working for this project.  I haven't used it in the past couple months, but the major complaint I have (which is similar to the genre complaint I have against the metadata company I work for, Gracenote) is that genres are compiled at the artist level.  This breaks down really easily for artists like Brian Eno, in that seeds based on a song like "Needles in the Camel's Eye" (a rather glam rock piece) are different from seeds for "St. Elmo's Fire" (an early electronic pop song) or "Evening Star" (a minimal electronic track).  Otherwise, it uses a great methodology and often works really well!  I hope they make money so they can populate their database!

I agree, they definitely deserve truckloads of cash. One thing I find a bit at fault with them though, is the inability to go back to previous songs that you have listened to. I also think that it would be great fun to work on that project.

So I've been on this thang for like an hour now. It's so much fun! Some of them are really weird though. I put in the "New Pornographers" and J.Lo turned up. Haha.

Gave this another try. Still doesn't work. I type in Mayhem, and it gives me Death, then Iron Maiden, then another Mayhem, then some Hardcore band. What the hell are mayhems genes? 'loud guitars'? I happen to like all these bands, except the hardcore one, but if I put in Mayhem I expect it to at least suggest me some black metal. So I put in Current 93. I notice that two of Current 93's genomes are based on piano (interesting as they don't use it on every album, or many of their live recordings) so I end up on fucking Coldplay and Tori Amos! FROM CURRENT 93! I went through ten suggestions and the closest was Cat Power, who I already know and think are ok.

But ech. It should be suggesting things like Coil, Death in June, Oraison, Gae Bolg, The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud, Viking, Sol Invictus, Of The Wand And The Moon, The Legendary Pink Dots etc. for C93. Not Tori Amos. The Genome system is screwed, which is why I'll stick with last.fm, which is also skewed, but gives me more palatable suggestions and has led me on to some good things in the past because it's suggestions aren't limited to it's database.

I have the same complaints as Khar (Who does rust, but only a little, or so he claims).
It has suggested some really cool stuff like Psyclon 9 but mostly it just comes up with weird unrelated music.
