how to play:

part 1: list 10 of your favourite bands. not necessarily your top 10, but 10 that give a broad range of your taste, so that no area is really left un-represented. don't get ultra obscure as well, it will give you a lower score than you might otherwise have.

part 2: score other people's lists according to this criteria:

2 points: i freakin' love this band
1 point: this band is moderately good, a mon avis.
0 points: i am unfamiliar with this band/ i have no particular feelings one way or another regarding this band
-1 point: i have a moderate dislike for this band.
-2 points: this band makes me wish i had been born without ears. through some cross sensory phenomenon it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. my eyes bleed, as the pressure of bad is too strong in my ears. etc.

then, tally the score up and post the results in the thread. a perfect score is 20, 0 is 50% and -20 is someone you share no taste with. try not to do people one by one, wait a little while for some lists to be posted before ranking them. this is just a bookkeeping issue. i imagine it'd grow tedious trawling through thread. i'm such a friendly threadmaker. (mods, take note)

ok go. hopefully by the end of this you will be able to see some fancy statistics, maybe some new bands and generally enjoy your time on the internet, in a delectably delicious deluge, delving into delicately deluded dellboys/girls.

my list:

manitoba/caribou
the magnetic fields
my bloody valentine
mogwai
m83
the flaming lips
enon
hot snakes
prefuse 73
nick drake

(if you want me to like your band, i suggest having it start with m. unless your name happens to be james hetfield)

Under Byen
Kaizer's Orchestra
Radiohead
Tori Amos
Xiu Xiu
The Decemberists
Low
The Mars Volta
Bonnie 'prince' Billy
Sonic Youth

I know I probably went all scandinavian on you by including Under Byen and Kaizer's Orchestra, but they are two of my favoured bands, no list without them simple as that. Yes even if it gets me a lower score ;)

It's not like many people are going to be able to rank mine...

Carpathian Forest
:wumpscut:
Skyclad
Sol Invictus
Inkubus Sukkubus
Ancient Rites
Agalloch
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows
My Dying Bride
Finntroll

And on that other note, I feel I'd give a lot of zero's. I will come and rank some people after my bath.

Cpt.Fantastic: 8 (props for admitting you like duran duran ;)
Khar: 1 (Skyclad is cool by me)
McTaggart: 4
Der Golem: 3

Sonet: 2 (Points for Mars Volta...  annoyingly, I've heard -of- most of those other bands, but never actually given them a listen)
ExiledSmarmy: 3
Skibas: 3 (props for Pinback!)

I kind of get the impression that I'm clueless about most people's music...  had to give a lot of zeros.  All you guys and your wilco's and mogwai's.

Here's my list:

1)Aphex  Twin
2)Opeth
3)J.S. Bach
4)Pinback
5)Broken Social Scene
6)Soundgarden
7)The Crystal Method
8)Iron & Wine
9)Dream Theater
10)The Mars Volta

That's a pretty good cross section of what I listen to...  some pretty random stuff in there =P

I have a sneaking suspicion the inclusion of grunge and classical music in my list is dragging the rating down, lol.

Quote from: noirony

where the hell do you get bands like that?

My Dying Bride are Peaceville, so straight off the high-street. The only Finntroll CDs I have were bought in Norway, but they're on Nuclear Blast now, I think, so no problem getting them, Carpathian Forest isn't that hard either. Skyclad it all depends: Folkemon onward they've got good distro, but they've skipped record labels more times than I care to remember: large amounts of their back catalogue is out of print or you have to work out the correct record label. I still haven't managed to even try and get hold of anything prior to 1998 in physical form and I figure I'm never going to actually hold a Skyclad EP. Inkubus Sukkubus I'd buy straight from Resurrection Records, preferably IN Camden, for maximum goth points. Agalloch similiarly I'd buy straight from The End records, but they're based in Canada, I believe, so I'd use the web. Ancient Rites I'd get through this sweet Dutch distro called Dis-Order who send me my only welcome unsolicited e-mails. Sol Invictus I would have got from World Serpent before they went bust, but they have their own label, Tursa, who I presume are reliable, UK band anyway. Sopor Aeternus I would actually just get off Amazon, and say 'ah fuck it' to any of the ridiculous special releases that come on fishnet-patterned vinyl in their own life-size coffins full of childrens tears, or whatever other ridiculous formats Anna-Varneys unhinged mind has spewed over the years.

And if you mean FIND OUT about these bands, the solution is to look for your music somewhere in the wierd and wonderful world beyond Pitchfork Media and Tinymixtapes. Try it sometime, it's great.
