Amazingly, my final project in English for Catcher in the Rye is to make a soundtrack for it. The songs can relate to a certain part in the story or just represent the ideas and themes throughout the book. I need at least 10 tracks.

So far, I have...

Modest Mouse - The World at Large (theme)
The Dismemberment Plan - The Jitters (theme)
Death Cab for Cutie - Information Travels Faster (theme)
Death Cab for Cutie - Coney Island (the scene with Holden and Pheobe at the merry-go-round)

I'm sure a lot of you know my musical tastes, so yeah. Recomendations...

That works pretty well, actually. Holden sees everyone as bad and rotten and the verses work somewhat with his dream of moving out to the country and marrying someone (though the person isn't deaf in the song :P) while living a secluded life away from others.

I've also noticed a lot of The Walkmen's songs fit with the theme of the book. I should have known, since they very effectively emit the spirit of old New York.

You could probably get some Tom Waits in there...

Also, trying to think of a suitable Flaming Lips song...

hmm.

well, it's been a long time since i read catcher in the rye, but when you mentioned holden wanting to move to the country, i thought of the Smog song "let's move to the country."  not sure how relevant it is, but maybe it'll help.
it's the first song on the album "knock knock"
good luck with the project.

Tom Waits is yes.
The Beatles - The Long and Winding Road or A Day in the Life, maybe?
Bob Dylan - Restless Farewell
And for the whole "Pimp in the elevator" scene, you simply MUST be playing Frank Zappa's Willie the Pimp. No Exceptions. AT ALL. It is the sleazy pimp song of the universe.
The Residents - Inner Space
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Sin in my Heart

Also, why not include Happiness is a Warm Gun? It certainly fits.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

My guess is it's a joke about Mark David Chapman (killed John Lennon, then sat down and started reading Catcher in the Rye).

Nice ones guys. Thanks. Once I build up a good list of suggestions, I'll make a CD.

Simon & Garfunkel - Only Living Boy In New York
Pretty much all of Tom Waits (perhaps Closing Time - the track, not the album - for the bit in the hotel bar)
David Bowie & Queen - Under Pressure
Billy Bragg - To Have and Have Not
Belle & Sebastian - Is It Wicked Not To Care?
Broken Social Scene - Lover's Spit

It's been a while since I read it, but that's certainly plenty to be going on with. If you only take two from these I'd suggest the Simon & Garfunkel and Billy Bragg ones.

don't include 'happiness is a warm gun' by the beatles.

Don't include it in anything, the title aside that song is fucking awful.

Worryingly, it's one of the better parts of the White Album.

that's a really cool idea for a project... i wish i had such cool projects when i was in school.

i'd help by suggesting a song or two, but i hated that book and i don't think i'd be able to choose properly.

I don't think "Information Travels Faster" would fit into Catcher in the Rye's theme.

Anyway, "Left and Leaving" by the Weakerthans would be a good song, I think.

At first I thought the "dance hall hips/pretentious quips" would have fit, but now it doesn't seem like enough. Heh. :P
