Jeph,

What are your limits for unrealistic events in the QC universe?
You've said before that people sometimes get thrown by surreal events (such as monks fighting), which is odd since there are talking robots all over the place. I'd just like to know if you have any limits in mind, a sort of "I would never go that far" boundary?

Nothing is set in stone except that I won't break the fourth wall.

Of course now having said that, tonight's comic will be Pintsize going "WOW GOOD THING THIS IS ONLY A COMIC STRIP HUH LOLLLL" and my career will come to a crashing, fiery end.

Never say 'never,' ever. If you ever say 'never,' you'll never say 'never,' ever, ever again.

Is 'snail' another word for 'vulva'? I only ask because, dammit, I don't get it, and this:http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=vulva

Since you and 'vulva' go back a bit, I wondered.

It's a reference to an Anders Loves Maria strip where "snailing" == rubbing your twat on somebody to gross them out.

Jeph, when you started this comic in 2003, how did you expect it would turn out eventually?

Failure, frustration, bitter recrimination

so I guess it's not too late

Jeph, why did you get rid of the raptor emoticon? Do you hate us?

!!!!

I didn't do that, it must've gotten lost when Ashton upgraded the forum software. I'll get one of the mods on it.

Jeph,

Will you marry me?

(You may have to put up with a few idiosyncrasies, but it's nothing some Prozac would help)

absolutely not

Jeph, what do you enjoy more: making music or web comics?

I enjoy them equally but in different ways

it is a blowjobs versus vaginas kind of dichotomy

Jeph, where does one line up for guest strip artist?

*duck and cover, duck and cover, duck and cover ... running running running running ...*

You pretty much either have to be friends with me already or I have to personally ask you for one.

Nah, nevermind. That's mean. I like you, Jeph.

Have you considered making an experimental new comic, since QC doesn't actually really seem to be your cup of tea in terms of your sense of humor elsewhere on the internet?

I'm not really sure what you mean. QC is certainly PART of my sense of humor, and I do think it's funny (or at least clever) or I wouldn't be doing it. But yeah, I think maybe by the end of this year I will be working on a second comic again. I've gotten fast enough with the artwork that I think I have the time to do two strips.

How was that webcomics weekend thing? If I could find my passport, I'd probably of tried to get down there for it.

So, a couple months ago, you changed the look of the main site. I've wondered ever since then what happened to the link to the forums that used to be there. Don't know why I didn't ask earlier. I know I could just use a bookmark, but ever since the change, I've had to google the forums as a separate entity from the comics section of the site in order to reach them.
And have you noticed any decline in the 'new forum visitors' count since the change?

I moved the link to the sidebar because I felt like it.

I honestly don't care how many people use these forums.

Jeph,

I was just wondering how much influence readers' comments and feedback have on specifically your writing and story. It's obvious that you pay attention to your fans, but do you consider peoples' suggestions ... or rely mostly on your own talent ... or some combination ...?

P.S.
Thanks for having the "Ask Jeph" thread, and especially for doing QC. I really enjoy your work!

Sweet. I should hopefully have a new passport by then.

So do you still suffer from the sleep madness? It's my third 'six-in-the-morning' in a row today, and I've just about acclimatized. I kind of like this three or six hours sleep whenever I can thing, it's working OK for now.

Jeph, did you have a hand in organizing that wildly successful Webcomics Weekend? If so, how far in advance did y'all start planning for it?

I'm asking this because I recently talked with a webcomicking friend of mine about possibly organizing a similar event in Texas for this fall. He's all gung-ho about the idea, so there is a good chance we may indeed get the ball rolling on this.

Jeph,

Would you rather fight an alligator or a bear? Your only items on hand are a rope, seventeen dollars, and a canteen full of milk.

Also, if you were drinking with Jeffrey Rowland, Randall Munroe, Meredith Gran, and Ryan North, who of that group is most likely to do something incredibly stupid and what would that be?

By heritage, sure, whatever.

I'm asking this because I recently talked with a webcomicking friend of mine about possibly organizing a similar event in Texas for this fall. He's all gung-ho about the idea, so there is a good chance we may indeed get the ball rolling on this.

Not directly. I helped with ideas and the actual physical set-up but most of the planning was Meredith, Rich, and Holly (Tallahassee from Topatoco). Actual planning and setup began about a month prior. It was very chaotic.

if you house and feed me, I could totally drum for Deathmøle. I'd even learn this mysterious "drum recording" thing you're all talking about. (no, really)

The last time I housed someone from the forums for any length of time he smelled up my couch and eventually got run out of town by the cops.

Alligator, no question.

Probably me. Say something stupid I would later regret.

Hi, Jeph,

A delicate question here.

Beyond the existing forum rule about not nitpicking, what else should we your guests know about appropriate conduct when we're critically discussing a strip, a plot line, or whatever?

"Don't be a dick" is a fine rule but I'm asking for something more specific. I know I've pissed you off before without meaning to, and want to avoid doing it again if possible.

Will posts along the lines of "This didn't work for me" or "That didn't feel realistic" drive you up the wall if they respect that you're committed to doing the best job possible? Is that the key issue, that some people have said that you don't care instead of saying that they didn't like something?

You've always made it clear that you're self-critical (as is every serious artist I know). Is external criticism just hurtful piling-on on top of your self-criticism?

There's probably a lot of us who want to balance an open discussion with being decent to the real person whose passion is creating Questionable Content.

I'm just saying, like, "off-camera" your sense of humor seems more raw and uncensored like on a home video version of Live at the Apollo instead of what they might show of Richard Pryor on an NBC special celebrating his life without actually, you know, showing the good bits because the really good bits aren't good for the network because the dude is legit funny, but man, just showing clips from Silver Streak, no matter how good it is, isn't really doing him justice.

I'm optimistic about a second project is all I'm saying. Rad.

Sorry if the question's been asked before, but I don't think this forum has a "search this thread for..." button, and the thread is already 30+ pages long.

Here's my question: as the creator of a popular webcomic, what advice would you give to someone who's about to launch a minor one? (as regards attracting a larger readership, for example, or any other useful advice you could think of)

Jeph, why do guitar players seem to hate multi-effect pedals so much?

Not only am I on a somewhat tight budget, so I can't buy a whole buncha pedals, but I think they're really handy and fun pieces of equipment to use, so I bought myself a Boss ME-50 the other day and I'm just catching shit left and right for it.

Money saved, sound quality lost. Your wallet/ears though.

...but I don't think this forum has a "search this thread for..." button,

It does, in case anyone else wasn't aware. That little search box up at the top left is oh-so-nifty in that it is context sensitive. Search for a word while looking at a page of a thread, and it'll search within that thread. Search while looking at say, The Music Forum, and it'll search all Music threads. And search from the opening page to search the whole of the great nation of QC-Foromia.

Actually that makes me think of an actual question, though I'm not sure you are the one to pose it to. Seeing as we have no real dedicated meta-thread around here, where should we direct queries about technical concerns of the forums? The only persistent thing I've noticed is occasionally when clicking into any given thread there seems to be about a 15% chance that all I'll get is a long load followed by a white screen. Sometimes it clears up with 2 or 3 refreshes, sometimes it stays that way for a few hours. I haven't heard anyone else mention anything, so maybe it's just me?

I get that "long load and white page" sometimes, although I would say no more that 2-3 % of the time.  I get it when clicking to get into a thread, or sometimes into a topic.  I click "Go Back One Page", and get back to whatever I was coming from, and do it over.

I also occasionally get the "xxx.php" page, and it asks if I want to look at it with a text editor.  I have looked at it, but didn't see anything helpful, so now I just click "Cancel", and it goes away.

I don't consider either of these to be a large problem, just a minor annoyance.

I get the blank page occasionally, the .php thing never; but most often the site just stops responding for a couple of minutes - I see this once or twice a day, sometimes more.  This is not a thing to do with my home connection, for instance, as I get the same at work on my university connection through Janet.  Usually the comic still loads (making me suspect the forum software), but just sometimes both become unresponsive.

Hey Jeph

Can we hook up and jam some time? I don't live anywhere near you, but I might be there on Sunday. Or not. Someday, yes.

Jeph, you are a pretty cool dude, if we were to meet in the real world for realsies, would we:
a) fist bump.
b) high five.
c) exploding high five.
d) shake hands in a solemn manner and never speak of it again.

Does Faye's hoodie ("Fight You") have anything to do with This Perfect Day?

Also, do you spell it hoodie or hoody?

No, and it's spelled hoodie.

Expect to fail, work your ass off, expect to fail, work your ass off. Repeat ad infinitum.

Part of it is the usual guitar snob assholery, to be sure, by MY main problem with them is durability. If you've got six different pedals and one breaks, you're only out that one pedal. If you're using a multi-effect pedal and it breaks, you're shit outta luck. And ALL pedals break eventually no matter how rugged they are.

Actually that makes me think of an actual question, though I'm not sure you are the one to pose it to. Seeing as we have no real dedicated meta-thread around here, where should we direct queries about technical concerns of the forums? To be frank, and nothing personal, but you're all extremely lucky these forums are still even HERE, much less mostly functional.

Also that problem sounds like it's just you. I've never had it.

Probably not, I am shy
