if you find music theory "fascinating" you will never write a good song

I find this incredibly insulting.

I'd somehow like you to listen to some things I've written rather than make such a statement.

To put it differently: If you enjoy taking art classes, you will never write a good webcomic.

Stop the quote tunnels, we'll never see the light!

I think what he's trying to say is that the folks who focus too much on theory end up writing wanky songs, anyways.  It may not sound like wank to the person who wrote it, but it's boring everyone else to death.  It kinda takes the fun out of listening to and writing music, because you start to overanalyze the songs and focus more on the theory than the way it sounds without thinking about it.

Quote tunnels, collapsed. Thousands of miners die.

I get that. But I try to keep wankiness down to a minimum.  :|

Glad to help, man.

I can't recall ever seeing anything about this anywhere, but do you have a work studio in your home somewhere? Or do you instead have a separate out-of-home space that you use as one? Just curious, I guess.

If it's an in-home studio, I have another question. How does this work logistically within your home? Do you and Mrs. Jeph just use the room for any art and comic-related business, and avoid it otherwise?

I am mainly just curious, but another reason I ask is because I would like to eventually have an in-home studio myself for my music and I would like to know from somebody who has firsthand experience with making it work for them.

Right now we have a separate office space about three blocks away for our actual business stuff. That's where the comics get drawn and until we switched to Topatoco that's where the shirts got mailed out too. Since we switched to Topatoco, and since we're hoping to buy an actual house sometime this year, we're probably gonna get rid of the dedicated office space.

The trick I have found with in-home work spaces, and something I have seen duplicated in other dudes' home studios and such, is that you have to keep everything on a different level, at the very least. You need a place you can retreat to when the work day is done, where your work stuff is not niggling at the back of your head "hey you should work on me some more." This varies from person to person, but the easiest solution I have seen is to just put your studio or whatever on the floor beneath where you actually live. Basements, etc.

I did an okay job separating work time from home time before we had a separate place, but that is possibly just because I am lazy and would rather not be working.

The basement thing is a great idea, come to think of it. That way all the living and eating spaces are on the ground floor, but still one floor above your work stuff, so it is actually more effort for you to go down to your workspace. I like it. Thanks a lot!

Hey Jeph, I'm planning a road trip with some friends of mine for late July some time, and interest has been expressed to see the Easthampton/Northampton area, since we're going to Boston anyway.  Completely understand if you'd rather not, but is there some way you normally go about meeting fans in the area, or is it more just like that kind of thing that happens if it happens?

I bet this has been asked before, but who cares?

Why is it the only people we ever see in a fight was when Dora socked Sven? Will Marten ever get into a fight? I'm pretty sure there are Hare Krishnas who have been in more fights than him. I love QC violence or no violence, but there isn't a guy in the world who goes that long without at least punching a wall.

Sorry about the Passport issue Jeph.  I grew up in a border town where people used to just sort of decide to cross the bridge and go to [insert name of restaurant here] for dinner and I just can't get over the changes to the long undefended border.

I don't really get why that would bug me. You can do that kind of "here is the formula for a joke" diagram with ANY comic. It's all variations on setup/punchline anyway.

Here's a sample script:

Quote
1

Dora: Have you thought about getting more piercings?

Hanners: Not really. I'm happy with how many I have. It's an even number and I'm still
symmectrical.

2

Hanners: Well, not COMPLETELY symmetrical. My ears aren't perfectly parallel, and my
nose is a tiny bit crooked, and one of my eyes has a tiny bit more green in it than
the other.

3

Hanners: And my right foot is a little bigger than my left foot, and my left boob is
a little bigger than my right one.

And I have a scar on my left shin from when I ran into a metal table when I was a kid,
and a few moles in various places.

And of course my insides are all pretty much just crammed in wherever they'll fit.

3.5

Hanners: But other than that, yep! Pretty much bilaterally symmetrical!

4

Dora: Man, now I'm gonna spend the rest of the day wondering if my face is uneven.

Hanners: Want me to go get my calipers? We can quantify your imperfections!

Faye: My right boob sags a little more than my left. I call it The Underachiever.

OK, how about this one.

I know that with my artwork when I used to draw pixel art in MS Paint, I started seeing the world in pixels at times. You spend 4-6 hours a day, 5 days a week, thinking comic, plus whatever you do in your free time. Do you ever catch yourself thinking of your world in comic form?

The goal is to have every strip available in print form. More recent comics will probably happen sooner, since they're fresh in my mind and the art sucks less.

Do you still need transcribers?  The ohnorobot archive peters out after strip 1290.

Search for "tapirs" and you'll fiind it, but then search for "savor the awkwardness", in the next strip and you won't

Deathmole name change?

You know, Metal-Poser-Girl is no longer with the band, so her threat to withhold "sex for a month if the band is not named Deathmole" is no longer operative.

So is the band likely to think about changing the name?  To what?

("Sex For A Month", on the other hand is a killer name for a rock band).

I'm not sure if he'll change it because he's already made a whole bunch of songs (1 EP and 3 LPs) under the Deathmøle name: http://www.last.fm/music/Deathmøle

But then again, stranger things have happened?

Jeph, has anyone pointed out to you how "deathmøle" sounds like if you actually pronounce the "ø" right? Or have you known all along?
