well, me and my friend were kind of joking around when we came up with this, but we came up with this idea for a band.  Ok, so, there'd be a drummer, but along with the normal drum set (a basic one), there'd be some bongo drums and a cowbell.  Next, there'd be an acustic guitar as well as an electric, and there would be a string bass player (who also sings).  There'd also be a Saxaphone player, because those are just cool instruments either way.  Rather than alternative rock, they would play with some blues influences and would play a few covers of old "The Who" songs, along with some crazy new stuff that rocks.  Think of Guster and the Decemberists melded into something awsome.

;)
Just wondering what you guys think of the idea.  Not that it would ever happen though (unless there IS some obscure band somewhere that fits the description)...

Ummm that sounds like pretty much every dub band in New Zealand...
Doesn't seem like there's anything particularly special about your idea sorry.

Change the sax for a Violin and add a few more people and you basically have the Arcade Fire

Yeah, I'm not seeing anything special. But that's probably because you don't have 80 thousand instruments and then decide to make art rock.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

it's certainly been done before... one end of the spectrum is architecture in helsinki, the arcade fire and so on. the other end is dave matthews. these are dangerous waters.

anway, ask yourself if such a variety of instruments is really necessary to play the songs, or are they just serving as eclectic fluff? the answer to that question is the answer to whether or not this is something that should be pursued.

And indeed every BatCave style goth band ever.

I can honestly think of pretty much no simple genre combinations that haven't been done already. Lots of them need to be done more though, particularly reggae metal, folk punk, electro-medieval, trance black metal and riot pop.

My band is that with an bass guitar, but he's saving up for a stand-up.

Sorry.

Now HERE is my current awesome band idea:

Standard prog set-up (1 guitar, 1 bass [who will hopefully buy a Stick], 1 keyboardist, 1 drummer) plus 2 female singers, playing jazz-inflected indie/prog (a la The Pineapple Thief's good stuff/Broken Social Scene or Spoon's more advanced rockings) with a post-rock song format. Imagine a 10 minute build from a desolate, sparse, jazzy indie thing, through to a moderately heavy solid jazz segment, up through a fuzzed-out metal anthem, down through some acid rock, back down to a few advanced jazz chords and an upright bass solo (like the end of a Bad Plus song).
