Picture dual monitors: 1920x1080 and 1600x1200, both packed to the gills with icons.

It's normally much cleaner. I thought about tidying up, but I felt like it would go against the spirit of the thread to make it presentable before print screening.

I've finally grabbed a program to let me slideshow my background, which makes me super happy.
But... Win7 can do that natively.  :?

(Also, wallbase, amiright? )

I'm on Vista too. I've wanted a program for switching backgrounds but I didn't like the ones I found. What are you using? :o

It's a program called, simply, beautifully, Windows Slideshow. Here's a link that has absolutely nothing to do with it; here's a link to the download page on cnet.

I guess this thread is as good a place as any to post about this, and I really want to share:

I've probably mentioned F.lux before; the program that shifts your monitor's color balance to a sepia tone when the sun goes down, making it easier on the eyes. But it doesn't do anything for the actual brightness, so the backlight can still be really uncomfortable. The only way I have of reducing brightness is the buttons on the monitor itself, which are a real pain to use. But now I've found Dimmer, a small and simple program that gives you an opacity slider, making your monitor less bright. It only does that one thing, and is slightly more troublesome to configure than it should be, but still a hell of a lot better than pressing a bunch invisible buttons on the side of my monitor 50 times.

Wait, I thought F.lux dimmed the brightness? That seemed to be its selling point from what people have told me.

No, it doesn't. See the FAQ.

Quote
Plenty of things already change the brightness of my screen. Why is this different?
f.lux changes the color temperature of your display. Natural light is more blue, while most artificial light (including candlelight) is warmer. Incandescent bulbs, which we're all used to, become more red in tone when you dim them. But newer LEDs and CFLs don't - this includes the backlight on your monitor. If you're a photographer, you've probably dealt with this, since pictures taken inside at night are always much more brown than photos outside.

Long as I'm posting in this thread, here. This is one of my favorite wallpapers.

Hmm, Dimmer apparently also affects the brightness of your screenshots. Here's one with Dimmer disabled.

Thanks, Zingoleb. I think I've used this program before, not sure why I got rid of it. My background is set to change to things in my creepy folder. I keep scaring the hell out of myself
Also I love the "i fucking love rainbows" caption. I have the same picture but it doesn't have the caption and Slenderman has been added.

F.lux looks neat. I'm learning a lot in this thread.

I made my desktop festive. Usually it reflects the season (time of year) but putting up lights and the tree have made me all excited about Christmas, so here it is:

(The raven file image is left over from Halloween/Fall and it's gonna be moved soon anyways, so I didn't bother changing it.)

Current desktop at work (it's on two monitors, hence the duplication):

Icons are organised using Stardock's Fences (this prevents them getting scrambled by remote access, which happens otherwise).
The image is a recent fanpic of Shinji getting down to it...  (contrast reduced for desktop use, of course)

Don't know if this picture will always be visible, it's hosted on my server at home, and sometimes the DynDNS resolution doesn't work.

I wonder if anybody knows what is going on in this screenshot…

The background is a false color picture of the Carina nebula from the Hubble telescope. Taken from here.

A WM stands for Window Manager. The system which organises the windows on your screen. I'm using a tiling WM, which arranges the windows automatically, in ways I can configure. Here's a hint which should make it much easier:

That makes it xmonad.  Any particular reason for choosing it?

Yup, XMonad. To be honest, the original reason was that it was recommended to me by a friend. I had a look at it, tried dwm and awesome as well, talked about this with some other users, and settled with it. I worked on my xmonad.hs, and am now really, really happy with it. Also I'm fascinated by functional programming languages, and plan to learn Haskell.

Whenever I'm forced to use a stacking window manager, like on Windows, it seems so inefficient to me now.

Written in Haskell? That's pretty cool.

I have a slight bit of experience with Haskell, and if you know any imperative programming language, it's pretty darn easy to get into. It's just functions. Functions calling functions on functions that return functions, yes, but still essentially what you're used to.

Not only is it written in Haskell, you also configure it in Haskell. To apply your new configuration you recompile. That's the only reason why xmonad is not really suitable for too small computers. You need the ghc, which is around 700MB big. If you want to use Haskell anyway it's not a problem, but if you only want xmonad, that's really big for such a small WM.

I have to admit, I don't really have practical experience in programming. I know a little bit of C, some Java, some Pascal, I'm a little more experienced in AVR Assembler (for Atmel Microcontrollers), and had a basic introduction to Erlang. But there's no programming language I'm really good at.

That picture of Primo's is only twice the size of the largest avatar file of a current user...  But of course it could be hugely smaller as a jpg (it came up at 1/6th the size with my default quality setting); png is not appropriate for it.

Yip, JPG would have been fine, even with a small quality setting because hay, it's a desktop.

This is mine, the background picture rotates through around 100 images like this, also I have a second screen which is actually a TV which I use for watching movies/TV shows in bed.

Her name's Nataly Dawn.  She got internet famous a couple years back making awesome youtube videos with her band "Pomplamoose" and now after a tremendously successful kickstarter campaign she's on tour promoting her new solo album.  I just love her stuff.
