Songs for nylon string guitar
« on: 19 Feb 2006, 22:05 »

I'm not a "classicly" trained guitarist, but my dad just recently let me have his nylon string guitar.

I've never really tried much in the way of finger picked guitar, so I'm not great at it, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on mellow tunes that I could learn that would sound nice on a nylon.  Obviously they dont have to be originally performed on a nylon string.

I've already figured out the Iron and Wine Such Great Heights version, if that gives you an idea of what type of tunes I'm looking for.  Thanks, guys, hope this thread hasn't been done already.  Sorry if it has.

Latin music.  A lot of that is performed on a nylon stringed guitar.  Not the really modern stuff, which is as bad as US pop.  I'm talking about the older stuff which is classified as jazz.

No, no.  I'm not talking about flamenco.  I'm talking about stuff like Antonio Carlos Jobim and that ilk.  Flamenco is practically classical guitar, so from your description of your skills, I wouldn't suggest it.  However, latin music is (I think) easier, and is really cool.

And samba, and the other various styles of music from latin america, because there's far more than what is popularized in the US.

Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There?

Mostly simple chords, and sounds great once you get it down.

Simon and Garfunkel and Dylan both used acoustic guitars, as did joni mithcle...hell, that entire genre did for a long time.

Dylan can be a bastard to play though.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Besides, I think this guy wants fingerpicking, whereas that whole style is more oriented towards strumming chords.

That said, if you want to try some strumming, there's a lot of good modern folk standards, like Universal Soldier, Streets of London, and a good deal of Dylans stuff.

Best. Song. Evar. But it just doesn't sound right on a nylon-stringed acoustic, y'know? Gotta have those Martin .012-.052s on there. And it's the same deal with "Bron-Yr-Aur" and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" by Led Zeppelin, it can be done, but it just ain't right on nylons. :B

I disagree. But it does sound better if you use a plectrum rather than your fingers.

Listening to it, it definitely sounds nylon strung to me.

It might only sound right with a plectrum because Gilmour might have used his nails to fingerpick it. I fingerpick it myself (not with nails).

I'm not too concerned with overall original timbre,  just want something that will sound nice and soothing on the strings.  Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!
