I think the lead singer needed to not try and look like he should be in Dexy's Midnight Runners.

He had a pretty cool hat though.

I love Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. And I'm not an indie hipster. And they were quite good on Letterman.

The voice takes some getting used to, I admit.

In terms of latest Indie obsessions, Wolf Parade > CYHSY.

Not that I don't love them both, it's just...CYHSY didn't write I'll Believe in Anything. So there.

Ha yes, I'll Believe in Anything is pretty amazingly good. CYHSY I like, but I can see how the voice would put people off.

I've loved them since last June. Funny it's taken this long to actually get recognition. Funny and sad.

It was the same thing the Arcade Fire. Mainstream's slow.

I'm not much of a fan of CYHSY...I mean I think it's just a bit too experimental for my tastes. I do like some experimental music, Deerhoof is fun, but I think CYHSY just took the trend too far I onno...

Yeah I like bands like Wolf Parade or The Flaming Lips better because it's more melodic. Wilco had some experimental stuff, but it doesn't overpower it.

Just 'cause the singer doesn't have the best voice doesn't mean that much anymore. Or did it ever? I mean look at Dylan. But in anycase, yeah CYHSY doesn't do much for me. I'd much rather chill to Iron & Wine or rock out to The Dears.

I think what you said here is wrong. I'm not trying to defend the band, cause I'm not a huge fan either. It's just that you're wrong.

CYHSY experimental? What? Their charm is that they are an honest, simple rock band. They have just as much, maybe even more melody than the other bands mentioned. I don't know where you get experimental.

Deerhoof- Now there's a band I might like were it not for the singer. Perhaps there actually are people who like Satomi Matsuzaki's voice. I will never be able to understand why.

Staying on topic, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah isn't experimental at all. Is it because of that "Clap Your Hands!" song that everyone except me seems to hate?

As for Wolf Parade, they had some good songs on their EP, but the album was disappointing and filled with... filler. Songs like "Same Ghost Every Night" are painful.

I'm waiting for someone to bring up Tapes 'n Tapes.

The problem is that "experimental" is relative, I guess. If you had heard any music that is really experimental - ie. stuff that Kai probably knows more about than me - you wouldn't think that CYHSY were particularly adventurous.

Just because I don't like CYHSY doesn't mean I don't like experimental. You're taking it to much to the letter.

Precisely because to me they sound generically experimentalesque, I do not like them much. But like I said, that's just me, they do little for me.

Am I the only one who thinks that, for a guy everyone uses as the poster child for experimentalism, John Cage is kind of boring? I mean, I've heard some stuff that was reasonable (his aleotoric music is indeed badass) and his scores are amazing to look at, but he does a lot of stuff that just doesn't sound that interesting (read: music for prepared piano).

Now that I completely agree with. I really don't see what the big deal about these bands are. I love nice, fun rock as much as the next guy (probably more, actually), but stuff like these guys is just too poorly executed to have any sort of groove, and we all know groove is necessary.

Yeah, probably, except Conan's. His is pretty much the only good one. There are parts of the others that are reasonably funny, but if you want the entire show to be good (though, a lot of musical acts Conan has on his show are horrible).

I really enjoy his aleatoric music, it actually sounds fantastic to me. I only have one CD of his Prepared Piano music, and it's not his famous Sonata's and Interludes. I'll agree, they ARE a little hit and miss- stuff like 'And The Earth Shall Bear Again' and 'Totem Ancestor' are absolutley fantastic, but stuff like 'The Perilous Night' doesn't make it for me.

I do, however, have another CD of his called 'Hommage A Satie', with pieces that are reminiscent / dedicated to Satie. That's filled with very good music- 'Cheap Imitation', which is an Aleatoric reworking of 'Socrate', is very cool, and 'In A Landscape' is beautiful while 'Suite For Toy Piano' is really funny. (Though my CD, for some reason, performs it on a grand piano...rediculous..)

Also-John Cage has been somewhat absorbed into classical music. 4'33 has been done by everybody and their halfblind grandmother. Prepared Piano can even be found in lot's of 'mainstream' Jazz records. The only ones the public has problems with are things like "0'00" and the much more complicated aleatoric pieces.

I do have the famous Sonata's and Interludes. I put it on expecting something really out there and cool, but it was really subdued. Oh well, there is always his aleatoric music. Also, maybe the fact that he's so rediculously popular for experimental music has gotten a lot of "mainstream" exposure, which has kind of lessened his effecct. When he first composed those prepared piano pieces, they might have been really wild.
