Mood Music
« on: 18 Apr 2006, 23:24 »

So lately I've been indulging myself in a new project - Mood Mixes.  That is, mixed CDs that adhere to a certain genre or mood with each song.  The idea being that the CD is fitting to play when you're either in a certain mood, or when you *want* to be in a certain mood (a useful trick if you're writing something, for example).

Anyway, I'm fairly satisfied with what I've got for a couple of mood mixes.  I may produce various volumes of each mood - for example, Angsty I through IV, or Amused I, II and III.
Most of what I've got is (gasp!) mainstream music, and not what you might consider Indie.  But since this is a mood mix, that's irrelevant here - I only use music that applies to the genre of the mix in question.  Indie-Ness has nothing to do with it.

It got me curious to see what others would do in this situation.  So here's the challenge - design a Mood Mix with your own songs to see what people think of it.  Use 20 or so songs, the amount that fit on a standard CD.

I'll start it off by posting my two completed mood mixes first up - I'm still working on Pumped, Angry and Cheerful.  But here are the first two...

ANGSTY
I Miss You - Blink 182
From The Sea - Eskimo Joe
Teenager Of The Year - Lo-Tel
How To Make Gravy - Paul Kelly
Drops Of Jupiter - Train
Brick - Ben Folds Five
Walk On - U2
Motorcycle Drive By - Third Eye Blind
Imaginary - Evanescence
The Ship Song - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Cigarettes Will Kill You - Ben Lee
Vindicated - Dashboard Confessional
We Are - Ana
In The End - Linkin Park
Buy Now Pay Later - The Whitlams
Klavier - Rammstein
Scar - Missy Higgins
Imitation Of Life - R.E.M.
Race Against Myself - The Offspring

AMUSED
Every Sperm Is Sacred - Monty Python
Rock & Roll Music - Mental As Anything
One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solemn Faces - Ben Folds Five
Rollercoaster - Machine Gun Fellatio
The Bad Touch - The Bloodhound Gang
Kev's Courtin' Song - Kevin "Bloody" Wilson
A Little Less Conversation - Elvis vs JXL
Blister In The Sun - The Violent Femmes
Asshole - Denis Leary
Spare Me The Details - The Offspring
Watch Out Boys - Magic Dirt
We Want Fun - Andrew WK
The Entertainer - Billy Joel
Stuck In The Middle With You - Stealers Wheel
Dr. Worm - They Might Be Giants
Heaven Is A Half-Pipe - OPM
Frontier Psychiatrist - The Avalanches
You Sound Like Louis Burdett - The Whitlams

And the as-yet-unfinished one I'm working on at present...

Bring Me To Life - Evanescence
Strange - Smashing Pumpkins
Sehnsucht - Rammstein
Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Freestyler - Bomfunk MC
Bodyrock - Moby

I like this and will now compile playlists to join in this effort, though i will only make them about as long as a normal cd (track numbers are irrelevant!) so 45-60 minutes long will do:

It's 4am, and I still think about you - mood: exhausted
the album leaf - we once were (one)
mus-ok - get out your lighter
boards of canada - turqoise hexagon sun
mum - weeping rock, rock
disparition - a commodius vicus of recirculation
dj shadow - midnight in a perfect world
90 day men - too late or too dead
buck 65 - fifty gallon drum
denali - french mistake
cocorosie - by your side

i will add more moods later!

I'm not going to compile a complete track list for any particular mood, but I'll just put forth a few ideas for several. I'll also be drawing from a rather small number of bands.

Angry:
Swans - Time is Money (Bastard)

Creepy (yeah, I know, that's not a mood. I don't care.):
Sonic Youth - Ghost Bitch (Protect Me You and Lee is Free also come to mind)
Pixies - Silver
The Velvet Underground - The Black Angel's Death Song

Amused:
Ciccone Youth - Master-Dik, the Tuff Titty Rap
Pixies - I've Been Tired
Television - Little Johnny Jewel

Angsty:
Ramones - I Remember You; Here Today, Gone Tomorrow; and Needles and Pins.
The Velvet Underground - After Hours
Lou Reed - Berlin, Perfect Day
Pixies - Where is My Mind?

Exhausted:
The Stooges - Dirt
Mudhoney - When Tomorrow Hits

Pumped:
Ramones - A whole bunch of songs (Blitzkrieg Bop; I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You/Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World; Oh Oh I Love Her So; Pinhead; California Sun; Rockaway Beach; She's the One...)
Pixies - Debaser, Cecilia Ann, Rock Music

Romantic/lovesick/whatever you want to call it:
Ramones - I Wanna be Your Boyfriend, Oh Oh I Love Her So, She's the One
The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
Pixies - Letter to Memphis

The only other filter I know of changes ov to of. This was becuase of an annoying rivethead type who always typed of as ov and got on someones nerve. It annoys me as many Behemoth tracks have ov in the title.

The way to say it, btw, as is the way to say nigger, is just to drop a colour=white tag on one of the letters. Not that you'd want to, apart from in song titles.

I have some of these, but I will post them later.

To be fair, it was just a 'politics' playlist, since Beverly Hills targets the American Dream.

As a general rule, I don't download music off the internet.  Not because I'm pretentious or convinced it's evil, I just sorta can't.  I lack an ipod, memory stick, or any other method to download music files off the University's server, and my parents don't get broadband internet for another month (living in rural Australia SUCKS).  So at present, downloading of music is for no.
Instead all the songs I use are off CDs that I already own.  My collection ain't big, only around 60 or so CDs, but many of 'em are compilations or "Best Of" albums, so there's a pretty good mix in there.
I need to get my brother's copy of the Ramones, Velvet Underground and the Dandy Warhols.  That'll help with the mixes a lot.  They have a lot of good songs to choose from that can fit into an Angsty / Angry mix.

Also I'm thinking of whipping up a classical music mix from the Beethoven/Mozart/Bach collection my parents own.  That'd be pretty nice...

That could very possibly be the best collection of band names ever.

Also I'm thinking of whipping up a classical music mix from the Beethoven/Mozart/Bach collection my parents own.  That'd be pretty nice...
Oh please God don't cherry pick movements from larger pieces.

Also Khar, I would love your lists, but there's too much grindcore in the Misanthrophy list.

Oh please, please throw a good Pete Seeger or John McCutcheon track in there, just for fun.  That's totally the best part about being a dirty liberal, fun protest folk music!

If I did that, it would be legal to confiscate all my musics and internets.  And to shoot me in the head.
Have a little faith here!  I'd pick 'em out of respect, not idiocy.  I know better than to cherrypick from a freaking concert piece.

Also, Khar and Burgundy win this thread with Misanthropy and Covers respectively.  Cover Songs ain't a mood mix, but that mix is good enough to let it slide.

1. Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
2. Happy Mondays - Step On (a cover apparently, dunno who of)
3. Guns 'n' Roses - Live And Let Die (Paul McCartney)
4. Futureheads - Hounds of Love (Kate Bush)
5. Metallica - Loverman (by Nick Cave; this is only really on the list because it's an example of how shite a cover can be. Metallica are one of the biggest metal bands ever, and Cave's version is still heavier)
6. Manic Street Preachers - Rock and Roll Music (Chuck Berry)
7. The Beatles - You Really Got A Hold On Me (The Miracles)
8. Madness - It Must Be Love (again, dunno who the original is by)
9. Radiohead - Be Quiet And Drive (Deftones)
10. Johnny Cash - Hurt/In My Life (NIN/The Beatles)
11. SikTh - Tupelo (Nick Cave. GREAT STUFF)
12. RATM - Maggie's Farm (Bob Dylan)

It's occurred to me that there's two Nick Cave covers and two Dylan covers in there.

Metallica is not too bad compared to covers like Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes or Disturbed's Shout 2000.

Oh there are far worse covers than 'tallica's cover of Cave, but Loverman is my favourite Cave song, and they made it shite.
