hey all,

i'm in the mood for female artists, probably acoustical style, who are just local to your area or haven't really hit the big time. to be fair, big time in this context can apply to an indie label. basically if a ton of hipsters don't know about them yet, i want to hear them.

post away! thanks

Rachael Cantu is really good! She's from Boston, I believe, and plays pretty acoustic songs.

Juana Molina is perhaps not exactly what you are looking for, however she is great and horribly underrated. She is an argentine folktronica singer who mixes acoustic guitar with ambient sounds among other things. Siesta music in other words, laid back and entirely in spanish.  I found out about her because I wanted some music with spanish vocals. It hasn't improved my spanish but damn it is buena! It is also impossible not to fall in love with her voice :)

Myspace

I recommend the album Tres Cosas :)

Fursaxa (a.k.a. Tara Burke) does some very spacey and ambient stuff, looping her voice a lot, stuff like that.

Mia Doi Todd has a really beautiful voice and does a lot of acoustic stuff, it's pretty great.

Finally, Ramona Cordova is not actually a woman, but often sounds like he could be, and plays absolutely stunningly beautiful music.

Lindi Ortega. My friend had me add her to my friends to help with some competition. she sounds like emily haines (read: HOT) and plays awesoem music.

There is a band out there called S. That's it just S. The album is called puking and crying. I don’t know if you'll be able to find it. It's ambient and spacey but folky and catchy at the same time. Again though, it's hard to find (I mean, try goggling "S")

These are some good recs, although to narrow it down more I found this band last night www.myspace.com/thescribbles

so yeah artists and bands who aren't that polished and probably are doing it more for fun than for fame etc

I suppose you'd count Emiliana Torrini as too big? Also not local by any means. Except that there is a town called Denmark nearby (ie within a day's drive I think) and Denmark's kinda near Iceland (like, closer than australia anyway).
