Fun Stuff > BAND
Someone tell me some modern bands I'd like.
timehat:
Maudlin of the Well is now Kayo Dot. I think they still are pretty awesome, but obviously there is contention on this point. Their latest album isn't as good as the first though.
To the original poster, I am familiar with the artists you listed, and can suggest relevant, modern music that I enjoy:
Opeth (Death metal with a pretty strong 70's prog feeling at times)
Tortoise (Post-rock type stuff, really influenced by krautrock and jazz)
Cancer Conspiracy (Great instrumental prog type stuff with a modern sound)
Cynic (Death metal meets jazz fusion)
Meshuggah (Death metal meets jazz fusion, although quite different than Cynic)
Alamaailman Vasarat (in their own words: "Ethnic Brass Punk")
Anekdoten (Modern Swedish prog band. Earlier stuff very reminiscent of KC's "Red")
Aghora (Interesting take on prog metal)
Jaga Jazzist (Their new album sounds a lot like Tortoise to me, but their previous albums married jazz and electronic in a better than nu-jazz fashion)
Porcupine Tree (Compared to Pink Floyd often. Often poppy, with an increasing metal influence)
Voivod (Progressive thrash metal. The only good thing Rush did was to influence this band)
The 3rd and the Mortal (Started out as something of a doom metal band, but became a lot more proggy/psych)
obvious choices:
The Mars Volta
Tool
Kai:
Oh, man, I have totally not listened to 3rd And The Mortal FOREVER *digs out cds*
a pack of wolves:
I'm Being Good are excellent. I've never heard them recorded but live they're definitely something special.
Joseph:
Kai, your long list there may just have become all the music I'll be checking out for a while.
Kai:
Awesome. It's all great stuff.
