Heritage Metal

Borondir:
I've never heard heritage metal applied to these bands before.  Like Khar, my mind immediately went to Viking and Folk Metal (btw, just got ahold of Tyr, mindblowing!)

The kind of bands you are talking about are usually referred to as retro metal, traditional metal, doom metal, or even sludge metal (though they aren't pure sludge)  Also, a pretty typical descriptor is indie metal, because for some unknown reason its hip to like doom right now, and these bands especially.

And no they are not better than Black Sabbath.  They are fun, but they admit what they are doing is Sabbath worship, not being better than Sabbath.

jariku:
There is no such thing as being better that Black Sabbath. Just like there is no such thing as temperature below absolute zero or more than one flying spaghetti monster.

KharBevNor:
You can get close to Black Sabbath, oh, you can get damn close. But you're never gonna quite get there.

If these are Sabbath-a-like bands then

a) I'm checking them out.
b) You need to check out Orange Goblin, Cathedral, Witchfinder General, St. Vitus, Pentagram, Goatsnake, Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass and Count Raven.

Also Earthride, which sounds like Black Sabbath with the ghost of Lemmy on vocals.

onewheelwizzard:
As long as we're talking Sabbath worship, don't forget Sleep, who took Black Sabbath's sound to places it really should not go back in the early 90's.  Basically, think about what would happen if Sabbath smoked about 3 times as much weed. and played twice as loud.

Witch is awesome, in my opinion, but I have to agree that nobody has ever done it better than Sabbath.

But seriously, guys, Sleep.
