I have to keep bringing this up I know, but seriously, Tatu doing 'How Soon Is Now?' is so good it makes my insides tremble.

I have no respect for musical hierarchy, I know.

That reminds me, the Snake River Conspiracy cover of How Soon is Now? is actually quite awesome.

Me too. I'm not sure whether it's just so awful that it's awesome, or just because it's so awful. :D

I definately prefer the APC version of Imagine.  Instead of being a hopeful and optomistic song, like the original, Maynard and Co. managed to turn in into a dirge...and the cynical asshole that I usually am just loves it.

*Sigh of reliefe*
Thank you.  Finally, someone else sees it the same way I do... APC make it more reflective of the way the world really is now, which I love.
Also, Maynard James Keenan is kind of my god-like-person.

Blondie - 'Hanging on the Telephone' - best cover ever!

But I very much recommend BBC 1's Live Lounge album.  The Sugababes cover of 'Living for the Weekend' is a particular favourite.  And has anyone heard Snow Patrol do Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love'? It works, and it shouldn't, but it really does.

this thread isn't too dead yet, eh eh?

Ben Folds (Five?) - Twin Falls (Built To Spill)
I read somewhere that Ben Folds would be just happy to make a Built To Spill cover band.
William Shatner - Common People (Pulp?)
and oh my god, Shael Riley does so many wonderful covers. http://shaelriley.com/ or he put a bunch on craigslist for download. http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/crs/240415064.html something about Wii points....

Devo - (I can't get no) Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)
Wall of Voodoo - Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
Jeff Buckley - Hallullujiah (Cohen) I give up, I can't spell
Nico - The End (The Doors) It's over-gothy, but in spots it really works.
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (Bowie)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Helter Skelter (Beatles) It's always their cover of "Dear Prudence" people talk about, but I have a preference for this cover.
Pavement did the only cover of "The Killing Moon" I will tolerate. STOP COVERING THIS SONG.
I'd say Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower" but that's not fair, as I haven't heard the original.

Also, I saw a Youtube clip of Faye Wong doing "Bohemian Raphsody." It was... interesting.

Ha ha, my sister LOVED Tatu. I could not stand them. At all. Yet this song was tolerable. I found out it was a cover song, and I said to myself, "If these... "Smiths" can create a song so good they can't fuck it up, they must be GODS."

Fell short of god status, but I do like the Smiths.

Devo - (I can't get no) Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)

Definitely that's my favorite cover ever. It completely obliterates one of the greatest songs of all time and invents New Wave out of the rubble.

My runner-up would be the Pixies cover of the Beatles' "Wild Honey Pie." It takes one of the Beatles' seemingly most uncoverable songs and serves the Pixies perfectly, n that it's basically a vehicle for primal screams from Frank Black (HONEY PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, HONEY PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!)

Speaking of Bowie, the acoustic versions done by Seu Jorge for The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou are freakin' awesome, especially Queen Bitch and Life On Mars

I'm definitely a big fan of these covers, some of which have already been mentioned:

Count Zero - The Killing Moon (Echo and the Bunnymen)
The Flaming Lips - Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
Pilate - Fairytale of New York (The Pogues)
Cake - I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
Seu Jorge's David Bowie tracks
Reverend Horton Heat - Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash)

dresden dolls - pretty in pink (psychedelic furs)

The Dresden Dolls do some good covers. I really liked the versions of "Amsterdam" (Jacques Brel), "War Pigs" (Black Sabbath), and "Such Great Heights" (The Postal Service) they did when I saw them live. However, I saw a video of them doing a cover of "Two-Headed Boy" (Neutral Milk Hotel) and it made me cringe.  I'm not sure I've ever heard an acceptable cover of an NMH song.  Wait, no, that's a lie... The Mountain Goats. But that's different.  I am currently trying, and failing, to find this furs cover online. Dammit.

neutral milk hotel - i love how you love me (phil spector)

This cover is fucking beautiful. God yes.

Quote
stars - this charming man (the smiths)

I just downloaded this to give it a listen and it's quite lovely, actually.  I like Stars, and that's one of my favorite Smiths songs (the fast version with the Morrissey Squeal, more so than the slower one) aaand somehow they go together well.

In addition:

David Bowie - See Emily Play (Pink Floyd)
Pavement - The Killing Moon (Echo and the Bunnymen)   yes yes yes yes whoever mentioned this one.
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust  (Bowie, dude) yes yes yes again to whoever mentioned THIS one
Nouvelle Vague - Human Fly (The Cramps)
The Pixies - Head On (The Jesus and Mary Chain)

All of Seu Jorge's Bowie covers are amazing.
Also, I heard a cover of Life on Mars? recently, by some (Norwegian? Swedish? Icelandic? Something...) chick whose name I cant remember, but it was quite good.

Paramore's cover of the Foo's My Hero sounds good.
Sting - Fields of Gold (could be the Police too, I don't care.)
Weird Al - Bohemian Polka (brilliant)
And Mad World by Gary Jules. Curl up in a corner and rock backwards and forwards delight.

And if anyone could help me, there's another cover of Gin and Juice I found on an old unlabelled CD.
Its a ska cover of the song, which sounds pretty good, and if you've heard it you'll know that it has quite sloppy rhythm to it. Can anyone give me the band?
