My friend and I were talking about bands who "stole" their names from other bands.. This is our list:

Burning Airlines (from Brian Eno)
Radiohead (from the Talking Heads)
Starsailor (from Tim Buckley)
We Are Scientists (from Cap'n Jazz)
The Futureheads (from the Flaming Lips)
Ladytron (from Roxy Music)

Add to it!

Edit: Pretty Girls Make Graves (from the Smiths, but also maybe Jack Kerouac)

Mogwai - Gremlins
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Japanese documentary of same name.

The Chemical Brothers originally called themselves The Dust Brothers, but ran into copyright problems with the original Dust Brothers. (Although they had no "The" prefix. They were just Dust Brothers.)

13 Candles (From Bathory)
After Forever (From Black Sabbath)
Catastrophe Ballet (From Christian Death)
Cryptic Wintermoon (From Immortal. It's a conflation of 'Call of the Wintermoon' and 'Cryptic Winterstorms')
Devils Whorehouse (From The Misfits)
Dream Evil (From Dio)
Funeral Procession (From Grave Digger)
Halo of Flies (Both my band and the other are from Alice Cooper)
London After Midnight MAY have taken their name from the XII.Stoleti song, or the Wrathchild America song, though it's more likely they all took it seperately from the film.
Pagan Winter (From Darkthrone)
Saints in Hell (From Judas Priest)

No, AlexH had it right.  The Dust Brothers (of Beastie Boys' 'Paul's Boutique' production fame) were knocking away in the States in the 80s, then fell off the radar pretty heavily.  It seemed to me they only came back into circulation after the now-Chems started using their name - Beck's 'Odelay', then that soundtrack you mention, plus of course Hanson's 'MM-bop' and some tunes for a requisite excuse-to-tour album from the Rolling Stones. Nifty.

I had a few singles and remixes credited to the UK Dust Brothers before the name change.  Pretty sure I've sold them all, though, along with whatever else I had.

Only other names I can think of right now, beyond local cover bands and nonsense:

Shakespear's Sister (The Smiths, ignoring their typo/spelling mistake)
Scott 4 (Scott Walker)

There is a local band in my area who play shit metal/emo rubbish. They are called My Sweetheart The Drunk. In your face, music lovers.

EDIT: Holy pants, I forgot. My band is called Five Lessons Learned. This is the name of a song by the Swingin' Utters. Who we sound nothing like, and hold no affection for.

Mid 90s? What the hell are you on about?

Gremlins - 1984

Gremlins 2 - 1990

Neither of those years are the "mid 90s".

Audioslave stole their name from another band apparently. Strange to think we live in a world where two bands wanted such a goddamn awful name.
