Radiohead are The Smiths Lite.

i like both bands but i fail to see the resemblance.

Well, "fronted by a whiny cunt" is a good start.  I suspect you're not thinking of Pablo Honey when you think of Radiohead, though.

Quote
according to the band themselves, the pixies were who they pilfered from liberally at the beginning, then autechre and on the last album the fall.

<shudder>

To what depths must you have sunk if you want to sound like Mark E Smith?

They have no purpose for existence beyond that as an object lesson in why the British music scene turned into shit after 1990.

i'm sure they didn't form with that in mind.

Perhaps I should have said "reason" instead of "purpose".

Quote
as much as i like the idea of a band forming in order to be shit. actually, i think the darkness may have done just that.

In a word: yes.

Quote
seriously though, there has been some great british bands since then.

There are always good bands.  They just don't define the scene because people are too busy listening to shit popularised by morons.

Hey, guys, let's not have Radiohead arguments. We've had them before, and they're pretty fucking retarded and you're not going to change anyone's mind on anything.

Death Cab for Cutie - a Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band song

You sure about this?  I don't have a link to my information, but I recall Death Cab stating that their name came from a line in the Magical Mystery Tour movie.

I believe Skyclad comes from the Wicca term for nudity.

Orbital got their name from the M25 Orbital Motorway that circles London.  They began their career at the rave scenes that occurred outside this highway.

LFO (90's British house music, not rubbish American pop trio) stands for Low Frequency Oscillation.  The Low Frequency Oscillator is a part commonly found in most synthesizers.

Led Zeppelin's name came about from a joke one of the members (I believe Jimmy Page) made in a bar.  When talking with one of the other future members about the possibility of forming a band, Page said "that would go over like a lead balloon," with Led Zeppelin being a small variation of that.

While I'm not certain of the connection here, the current artist/group Aqualung may be derived from the Jethro Tul album of the same name.

I'll try and think of a few more.

I suppose none of the ones I've listed are "stealing" per se, but I still find them interesting.

I actually said Skyclad in response to tommydski saying something about good English bands since 1990.

Death Cab got their name from the Magical Mystery Tour movie, yes, but it was from a song in the movie, which was the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's song, Death Cab for Cutie. BAM, I KNOW THE FACTS

I realize you said Skyclad.  However, you'll notice this thread is about name origins, and your one-word post does little to fulfill that.

Interesting Death Cab info.  I haven't seen the movie so I wouldn't have noticed.

Re Skyclad: the term has been around for thousands of years.  Wicca has been around for about 40 years.  So we can hope that Skyclad nicked their name from early Celtic tales, as opposed to a bunch of idiotic bead-wearing hippie wannabes.

Jesus H Fucking christ.

This is the last fucking place I thought I'd hear people spouting shit about wicca!

ARADIA, GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES WAS PUBLISHED IN 1899. ALL THE BACKGROUND FOR WICCA COMES FROM 19TH CENTURY MYSTICISM AND PAGAN REVIVALISM. GERALD GARDNER, A STARTED PRACTICING WHAT WOULD COME TO BE CALLED WICCA IN 1939, HOWEVER WITCHCRAFT WAS ONLY ACTUALLY DECRIMINALISED IN THE UK IN 1951, WHICH IS WHEN HE FIRST PUBLICISED WICCA AND BEGAN WORKING ON WITCHCRAFT TODAY, WHICH HE PUBLISHED IN 1954. EVEN IF YOU ASCRIBE TO THE THEORY THAT GARDNER AND LELAND MANUFACTURED ALL CONNECTIONS TO A CONTINUOUS PAGAN WITCHCRAFT RELIGION, AND THERE WAS NO NEW FOREST COVEN, THEIR SOURCES STILL STRETCH BACK FAR INTO OCCULTIC TRADITIONS OF THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES.

WICCA HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE NEW AGE MOVEMENT

...

...

>_<

Also, if you want to be more specific, Skyclad aren't just called Skyclad because they've been exceedingly obliging and actually written a song about why they chose that name.

http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/skyclad/waywardsonsofmotherearth.html#8

The relevant passage:

"Held within the safety of this mundane existence,
Facing endless grey Mondays of dull nine to fives,
We all climb the social ladder with a dogged persistence,
Forging chains we shall carry for the rest of our lives.

We cannot see though clothes may maketh man
they cannot give us shelter,
On this mortal helter-skelter
if our loyalties are torn,
Between the values we believe in,
and the egos we are feeding,
We stand all together naked as the day we were born.
And so cast off the lies that are our lives and find the truth within.
SKYCLAD--the veil has lifted,
SKYCLAD--now I see through,
SKYCLAD--your mask of illusion,
SKYCLAD--to the fake that is you."

How is Skyclad stealing from anything? It just means naked. The air being your clothes. Why do people always have to credit a word to something? Why can't something just be a word?

So whilst not 'stealing', as such, they are definitely taking their name from that source.

Not quite.  Originally the thread was about bands who took their names from other bands or their songs.  It's since drifted into movies - though surprisingly nobody mentioned Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - and into "any origin at all".

I think it's also a nod to that Earth album that was called something like 'Sunn Amps And Smashed Guitars'.

brian baker formed dag nasty, who were absolute shit and probably the inspiration for every shit band that has been called 'emocore'.
ian mackaye formed embrace, who were a hastily reassembled version of the faith. also, they were rubbish.

I really like Embrace and Dag Nasty myself. Embrace, well, the guy just can't sing in the slightest and it's old school emo as hell so I just can't help liking it. And although Dag Nasty have gone a bit wonky over the years 'Can I Say' is just textbook melodic punk with a nice bit of emo lumped in. I don't doubt the two of them are responsible for a lot of shite, but not nearly as much as Minor Threat and the sXe thing.

Squarepusher occasionally releases stuff under Chaos AD (the title of a Sepultura album).

Then of course there's

but I don't know if that counts here since the original DM isn't a band?

While we're on it, there's a terrible commercial Kiwi hip-hop crew called the Deceptikonz.

And don't even get started on groups named after various bits of electronics or instruments. Wait, someone's already done Sunn O))). So then there's The Prodigy, DMX (the rapper) and DMX Krew (electro group on Warp), 1200 Techniques and at least one other artist with 1200 in their name.

And no-one's mentioned this guy yet?

aah, i see. i only assumed that they got it from buk, basing it on the fact that he wrote a poem entitled 'the good life,' and the band's lyrics are reminiscent of the themes associated with the author. as well, they go so far as to mention his name in at least one of their songs.

Right... it was the title of a Saul Bellow book, 'The Adventures of  Augie March'. The title was chosen 'cause Glenn Richards reckons he wrote songs like Saul Bellow wrote books.
I haven't read Saul Bellow, but if his stuff is anything like last night's Augie March show it'd be more emotional then the ending of Cowboby Bebop...

I used to know a bunch of trivia stuff like this.

Darkthrone got their name from a Celtic Frost song
Mayhem got their name from a Venom song (Mayhem without Mercy)
Bathory got their name from Erzsebet Bathory the Hungarian countess and also from a Venom song.
Burzum, Gorgoroth, Cirith Ungol, Isengard and a whole lot of other bands got their names form Tolkein.
Mars Volta got their name from an interview with the director  Felini(sp?)
Megadeth got their name from a US Senator's speach
Metallica stole their name from a fanzine
Opeth is from a Wilbur Smith book
Zyklon B is named after the WW2 chemical
Dimmu Borgir is a lava formation in Iceland
Paramecium is a micro-organism
Demons And Wizards - is named after a Uriah Heep album
Nevermore got their name from Edgar Allan Poe
Samael is from the book of revelations.
Therion was taken from the Aleister Crowley / Celtic Frost / bible
