Some of the stuff I've done
Luke:
I've said this many times before, and I'll say it again: you can draw anything in Paint that you do in Photoshop. The only difference is that it takes longer.
There seem to be a lot of people out there that don't understand this.
Justin:
i guess that's technically true, but if you wanted to create fancy glow lighting effects wouldn't that take unreasonably long?

Yeah, but at some point it's kind of like, I don't know...masturbating with sandpaper. The farther you try to go, the more impossibly difficult it becomes.
Creating something as rudimentary and important as a gradient is very difficult to do in Paint. Paint is good for putting captions on pictures of owls and things like that. If you have no money, use GIMP instead. It's much better.
To the threadstarter: I suggest using Flickr as an image host. It resizes your pictures sometimes, but it gives you different size options and stuff. Plus, you can download nifty uploader tools from the site. If you have a lot of big, hi-res artwork, just get a DeviantArt account or something like that. DA doesn't resize your artwork at all, but it's bad for simple image hosting.
Luke:
I never say that Paint is a program superior to anything else. Essentially my point is that a JPEG is a JPEG, and both Paint work and Photoshop work can be saved as JPEGs.
And yes, gradients and light effects can be a bit of a bitch to do in Paint. I've done both of them before - all you need to be able to do is figure out a bit of math with the RGB values.
Ghostwriter:
Right, that is true. But I would still say that Paint is pretty useless considering the other (free) options.
