I just got back from Bright Eyes in Saskatoon (three hour commute each way) and it was a very damn good show! Gruff Rhys, guys, is officially pure awesome. He messed up during the first song and the audience was all "YEAH IT'S OKAY YOU STILL ROCK" and he finished it and it was devastatingly beautiful like most of his set was. Also, I won't ruin it, but when he offers to play the song with the birds in it you should accept heartily.

Bright Eyes themselves were pretty good. They played "Train Under Water," "Poison Oak" and a rather spare version of "Lover I Don't Have To Love." Also, Oberst definitely played "First Day Of My Life" solo. I was sad there was no "Bowl Of Oranges" or especially no "Road To Joy" but he's got such a massive catalogue that I guess you can't have it all. It was still pretty radical though.

The venue kinda sucked ass; it was basically part of the city's exhibition grounds and thus was a big concrete room with enormous curtains separating us from backstage and a big beer garden that I hated because it meant that we were in that shitty venue so some promoter could set up a beer garden and make some additional scratch, gahhhhhhhh. And there was no merch. So going into it, there were two strikes, but they managed to hit a decent triple, if not an inside-the-park homerun.

I was there too!! I agree, the venue was absolutely terrible. It was like a barn in there. Terrible. And then the no merchandise thing kind of sucked. I nearly cried when Conor first started. He was amazing. I loved First Day of My Life. Also, after the show I got Conor's beer cans! Three of my friends and I, after everyone had asked for the set list and what not, asked for the beer cans. And they were still cold and still half full so we drank them (in the bathroom.) He was drinking Labatt Blue. So then I did too. And then, my friend found $110.00 on the bathroom floor. So, it really was the best night of my life. I drank Conor's beer, still have the can, became $110.00 richer (well my 3 friends and I) and I got to listen/watch Conor all night.

Oh. And I MIGHT be going to the Calgary Folk Fesitval to see Feist (for my second time) and Broken Social Scene. Hopefully.

(PS I'm one of Tawnya's best friends.)

Joseph:
I saw Neko Case on Sunday.  The opening act was a surprisingly good folk artist named Sonny Smith.  His lyrics were witty and he had a great presence.  In between him and Neko I ran and bought both the records he has, one EP and on album.

Neko Case, however, blew him away.  Her stage banter was hilarious and her voice was superb.  To tell the truth, I wasn't at all familiar with her solo stuff, but I'm going to have to go and pick some up, I was just massively impressed.  Halfway through one song a string on her guitar broke, so she had to stop and use a different one for the song, while she switched she was cracking jokes the whole time.  If any of you have the chance to see her, I highly, highly recommend it, it was easily one of my favorite shows.

I was regaled with this story! It is a "gooder."

This I also recall.

Good luck with the Broken Social Scene. Also, Feist is the only artist I have time to see at the Folk Fest in Regina this year; however, since she's doing some day sessions with a locla band I am excited.

Marauder:
Saw BSS last night, absolutely incredible.  Feist and Bell Orchestre tomorrow, and Fiery Furnaces, Metric, Wilco and the New Pornographers coming up next week.  Love Bluesfest.

If I don't get to go to Calgary Folk Festival... Right now, it's not looking promising, because for some reason my mom doesn't feel like going to see her son in Calgary so I can be happy and go see BSS and Feist, then I will most definitely be at the Regina Folk Festival, to see Feist. If only my parents weren't so paranoid, and would let me go by myself. But, I guess that's understandable.

Marauder: That sounds amazing. You're very lucky to be able to go see all of those bands. I'm in awe.
