Korn.

I listen to Korn and the like when I clean because it is not mellow, and thus aids in motivating me to work.

However, it fails today because I have BUBBLEWRAP

Got one of these tiny microsingles with Wäldchengarten - Distractions which just arrived from the label. Much in same vein as W, noise ambient but this is more quiet sounding.

The batteries in my cd player died, so I was forced to improvise in the car coming home from work tonight.  I scrounged a cassette copy of Depeche Mode's "Violater" album, and I figure - having done the research in my own lab - that I'm now exactly 0.43% cooler than I would have been if I had listened to something else.

Now I'm listening to the Neurosis & Jarboe cd...

Bloc Party - Waiting for the 718 (live)

It's awesome. Does anyone know if it's from the forthcoming new album or is one of their old tracks? The frentic bassline and the way it's put together makes me think 'new', which I really hope is right because then there might be one indie-rock band of the last 2 years who's sophomore effort isn't going to -suck-....

The Cardigans are fairly great, I reckon.  Not someone I listen to, but they seem like cool people and if I ever hear them at a friend's place I'm happy about it.

That Scissor Sisters version of 'Comfortably Numb' is hot, but I'm not a huge fan.

Kinda improbably I'm listening to The Beatles' 'Strawberry Fields Forever'.

I don't really like Frou Frou or Imogen Heap per se, but there's definately something about her voice that I find intriguing...I guess that means that I won't ever own any of those cd's, but if someone is listening to them around me, I'll enjoy it..does that make sense?

Right now I myself am listening to the absolutely MARVELOUS album "The Satellite Years" by hopesfall.  It's one of those bands - Envy is another - that managed to make music with screamed vocals in it beautiful...there's some extremely delicate guitar work hidden if you listen close enough...too bad the last album they did turned them into shite...

Cryptic Wintermoon - When Daylight Dies

CW makes all other ventures into the territory of melodic black metal look decidedly pointless.

"Night is finally closing in, but I have no fear
In the hour when the night falls
Voices from the dark side are calling my name
Slowly fading to the world where I belong
Ebony rising, I close my eyes
Flashing pictures of an old remembrance passing by
On obsidian wings I fly, leave the gates behind
Through the colonnades of eternity
This is the end for me, I'm DYYYYIIIIIIIIINNNNGGGGGGG!"

I'm pretty partial to melodic BM, "Born of the Flickering" the first Old Man's Child album is probably my pick of the genre.

I'd probably listen to them in chronological order. 'The Age of Cataclysm' first, then 'A Coming Storm', then 'Of Shadows...and the Dark Things You Fear'. There's not really much between them overall, but each one has quite a different overall feel to it, despite the fact that they have a very definite style, and quite a narrow lyrical focus (Apocalypse, Medieval Satanism, Death, Mechanised Warfare and combinations thereof). I do enjoy a good bit of the old melodic BM myself, but no-one on quite the same level as these guys. The strange thing about them is that they sound somewhat generic, but not really like anyone else: they have a dash of old-school MDM to them, and an almost impeccable restraint as far as the use of keyboards go (overuse of keyboards and Dani Filth vocals are the two things that most often sink Melodic BM bands). They're also pretty admirable for having a female member and not making her sing.

Actually, speaking of overuse of keyboards and Dani Filth vocals, have you ever heard Illnath?

Illnath - Cast Into Fields of Evil Pleasure

The best description of these guys was provided by a friend of mine "Hey, it's kind of like Cradle of Filth, but it's more guitar driven and doesn't suck balls"

Oh man, now I'm on a kick of cheesy melodic bm. I'm gonna have to listen to Vlad Tepes' whole discography or something to atone for this, but it's soooo gooooood.

Dimmu Borgir - The Mourning Palace

Is there any logical reason why the video for this song is all clips from the pacific theatre of World War Two?

You like the Dulli? Mis, I love you.

I listened to that album this afternoon. That is absolutely the best album I've heard all year.

As for what I'm listening to:
Bob Dylan - Workingman's Blues #2

Wonderful song. Probably the best on the new album. One of the few Dylan songs where the music is as important as the words.

Actually, the only reason I wanted to go to that concert was because Mark Lanegan was going to go on stage with them (he did about 5 songs with the singers last night), so I thought I should listen to the singers before I decide. I got Powder Burns and after I listened to it there was no question about going.

Dulli is a pretty nice guy, I heard that he hung out with some people and even sang the pixis' Wave of Mutiliation with some girl. Lanegan looked like he was going to kill himself after the show.

Anyway,

Wäldchengarten - Distractions

Maybe I am not as hardcore as I thought. I start singing when I am listening to this. I am not as much bored as I am utterly creeped out by their barren soundscapes of electricity, it sounds so alien and inhuman.
I imagine it is kind of like floating around in the bleak vacuum of space.

Just downloaded the free stuff on their site, cos this sounded up my alley.  Listening to their live set, pretty devastating.  Surprised it's all electronic - I mean, there's very little harmonic action to speak of, but I had the image of guitars being shaken and amps rattling and stuff...

As far I know one of them is a guitarist and they do use manipulated squeals and wails from guitars. Once in an interview one of them explained that the best use a guitar he had owned for 8 years ever served was when he drilled a hole in it and recorded the sounds.

Sounds like fun, I was into doing that kind of thing for a while - a friend and I had a kind of bedroom noise project going when we were teens.  Well, project sounds too organised, we were just kids making noises - classic noise cliches like tapes of ranting preachers, Eastern European singing, mixed up with making noises by doing stuff like pointing remote controls at guitar pick ups, sticking rulers between the strings and slapping them, etc.

Actually, I do agree here, but I would suggest starting with Bringing It All Back Home. Not only is it one of his finest works, but it's split in half between his acoustic music and his electric music, so you get to see both sides of him and decide which side (or maybe both) are for you.
