The Knife - Silent Shout

All the hype/talk around this cd keeps making me forget how catchy the actual music is.

amok, that's exactly why I couldn't immediately get into The Knife. I don't know why, and I regret it, but I guess I had expectations for the album. That's a bit silly.
I'm currently listening to The Lost Riots - by Hope of the States, at least, sort of currently. As of this second, I am listening to Nightwolf by Bohren and Der Club of Gore.

It annoys me when that happens, I try not to let anything other than the music detemine whether I like a band but when I read/see/hear lots about an album before having properly appreciated it, I tend to get distracted and almost get bored of it without even having heard the music much. Going back to that album, it's actually really, really solid.

In a bleepy mood now so I'm rockin' The Presets - Are You The One?

Darkthrone - Quintessence

Man this is some serious Celtic Frost worship, I absolutely love the vocals on this track, combining the vocals with the main riff and the lyrics is just such an amazing effect, so fucking metal, impossible not to headbang and the production damn the guitars sound so awesome, almost all treble, such a good effect. This song reminds me why Panzerfaust is such a good album.

Varg wrote the lyrics, I think they're pretty interesting, combines Odin with Satan...

Eight miles deep the well forgotten by mortals
Oh, I drank it empty in one single sip
Eight miles wide the valley beyond all hope
Oh, I filled the hole with one single fist

Five million christians on a ride towards us
Oh, I slaughtered the bunch with one single hit (with my spear)
Five million women so alone in the night
Oh, I had them all satisfied profusely (every night by myself)

Ten thousand trolls hard as rock cold as ice
Oh, they ran when I rose to face them
Ten hungry waves they swallowed my ship
Oh, I steadily walked home (and I only got wet on my feet)

No single book was beholden to me
Oh, there is no question I cannot answer
Only one single lamp does show me the way
And that is the eye of Satan

Myrkgrav - Om e danse bekhette

Folk/black metal, which is a pretty generic formula, but is done pretty well here. Instead of just throwing in a lot of folk instruments, there is a lot of emphasis on epic and folky guitar melodies, as well as some excellently harmonized clean singing.

Donovan - Cosmic Wheels

Yeah, more Donovan. Doing that folky poppy thing he does so well. Listening to his lyrics, and he mentions velvet a fair bit on the tracks I have. Not that you wouldn't want to sing about velvet, but I'm simply commenting.

The Field - Everyday

Grabbed this as a result of t'other thread that at the time of going to press, should be floating around near this one. Damn good record, very stylish. Lots and lots of delicious techno beats with bits of plenty other styles layered on top, and the obligatory 'vocordered-to-fuck-woman-going-aaah' that makes good dance albums great.

Jesu - Conqueror

Not as monumental as I had hoped but nonetheless a solid album. The funny thing is that I'd be hardpressed to explain why it is not as good as my expectations. They were maybe too high? I don't know, it should be ideal for me because I have nothing against drones and noise but it just doesn't click.  I would have made it heavier though.

Exodus - Going Going Gone

I haven't listened to much of Shovel Headed Kill Machine (Besides Deathamphetamine and the title track) but it is a good, enjoyable thrash record. Haven't heard any of Exodus' early stuff, so I have nothing to compare it to in that respect.

Sublime debut album from some random British alt-rocky band. I love it when bands just come crashing onto the scene with a storming first CD instead of building up gradually.

New Order - Temptation (Peter Black re-edit)

I am at a loss of words, this is one of my most favouritest songs ever, and this remix makes it even better. It is dancier, longer, with more layers. The outro drags a bit, as it is just some beats, but seeing as this probably belongs in a dj set, it does give an easy way to mix in another song (I'm thinking of using a soulwax track)

I'm listening to Blut aus Nord's "Mort", just finishing my first listen through it and I have no idea if it is brilliant or horrible. It is basically weird riffs made up of discordant chord progressions, in weird timing, with weird programmed drumming behind it, with weird chanting over it. It also has the same atmosphere throughout the entire album, but is kinda hypnotic. I suppose I'll put the album away to be rediscovered later.

Turisas - Battle Metal

Yeah, the title of the song tells about everything. Viking-style singing, flutes, accordion, violins... and heavy electric guitars, base and fast drums with double-bassdrums. Turisas is a finnish folk-metal band, which has gotten some fame from its individual style using so much accordion and violin in metal music. Album "Battle Metal" released in 2004, new album "The Varangian Way" will be released in June 2007.

I just damn love this song, can't really wait for the new album.

If you want to listen to this song, go http://youtube.com/watch?v=LIM8CMEM2FY . Some crappy Braveheart video with Turisas - Battle metal playing in it.

I decided that after listening to Red Sparowes tonight that I should listen to the band everyone says Sparowes are a big rip-off of. So here I am.

No judgment yet, I've only just started the first track.

A Pagan Place by the Waterboys.

Fuck I love the Waterboys. Mike Scott's never been afraid of running the risk that his reach might exceed his grasp - if he wants to write a big song then by god, he's gonna write a big song. Everything he writes is epic and intimate at the same time - his songs are absolutely unique in my experience, which must be the ultimate goal of any artist. The "classic four" Waterboys albums (the Waterboys, A Pagan Place, This Is the Sea, and Fisherman's Blues) are all unmistakably products of the 1980s, but they're all completely timeless too. The Waterboys' new album just got a five-star review last week in the Guardian (which usually has pretty good taste where music is concerned) and I can't wait until it gets released here.

Basically I'm saying I want everyone to go out and listen to the Waterboys.

EDIT: Kim, doood, for the longest time when somebody asked me what I listened to, I told them "Jazz, punk, and country."

On the way home from dinner I was listening to a tape in my car's tape deck that was unable to decide whether it was at the start or the end of the side, so it kept playing forwards, stopping, playing the other way, stopping, playing forwards and so on. One direction had loud squeaks from slightly dodgy drive mechanism. Each time it switched directions there was this mechanical sound of things moving and different gears engaging. As it played each direction briefly there was a short burst of that static that only a tape that's been sitting in a hot car for at least two months, often with a mobile phone sitting next to it with calls incoming can provide. All of this over the disjointed hum and buzz of a slightly sick cheap japanese 4 cylinder engine was just great.

These are sounds that I'll never be able to reproduce, let alone record, and even if I could it wouldn't have the same impact. I find these things are best when the are live, accidental and found. I'm gonna end up as one of those people who wonder about in crowded city streets or stand in peak hour traffic on the freeway doing field recordings of everything one day.

[edit]The tape was Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid's The Exchange Sessions (volumes one and two, side a and b) no less. I think that only makes the moment more incredible.

What was hilarious is that I am using Yahoo radio... the song before this was "The Pledge" by the West Side Connection and its an 14 second intro, then immediately jumped into good old Chuck Berry... It mixed so well I laughed out loud and received stares from the local student patrons...

Always knew Chuck was keepin it real...

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

I think this is one of the best songs ever written, it is absurdly simple, the singer can't sing, the lyrics are about as shallow as you can get, they can be summarised as "holy shit i'm randy" and this somehow mixes into two and a half minutes of awesome.

"Say Man" - Bo Diddley

When a man makes an entire song out of shit like "You look like you got whooped with an ugly stick" and "Your girl's so ugly she had to sneak up on the glass to get a drink of water," he pretty much wakes up in the morning and pisses excellence.

The Protomen - "Hope Rides Alone", "Unrest in the House of Light", and "Will of One".

The three tracks from the Protomen's site, which I found earlier today via Nuklearpower (thanks again, Brian!). I have to say, they're quite addictive. The straightforward RAWK licks aren't mind-boggling, although the Johnny Cash-style "Unrest in the House of Light" is surprisingly stylish. The spoken word narrative on Hope Rides Alone is a tad grating, but oddly compelling... actually, that describes all three tracks well. What is it about a neo-Orwellian rock opera about Megaman that speaks to me so much? Gads, I dunno, but I'm yeeeeaaaaaa close to picking this album up.

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

Did you know that this was John Peel's favourite song?

I just watched Dave Chappelle's Block Party

My favourite part of this movie was when Erikah Badu whipped off her afro wig. I previously did not know such things existed - I just thought it was a hell of a lot of hair!

On-topic, I'm not listening to anything now but I was just recently listening to Castaways and Cutouts by the Decemberists as part of a review I'm writing for a new and highly self-indulgent project I've recently started called No Ratings.
