I went for a walk and sat formore than half an hour in the little suburban park down the road from me just listening to whatever there was to hear. Initially it was just standing still for a second trying to tell if that wierd little bouncy sound was a duck or not but then I ended up just sitting and listening.
The frequent but not overpowering sound of cars on the big road behind me and when that was silent the dull drone of cars that counts for silence in cities. The sounds of the ducks and other birds on the water of the little pond; that bouncy sound and it's echoes, small splashes and paddling sounds. Rustling of foliage in the wind (a pretty constant wind and so a pretty constant texture from the reeds and things). Crickets and frogs that seem to make a similar highish rapid clicking texture that pulses in and out in unison but changes just enough that it doesn't feel like it adds a beat to the scenery. And every now and then there was a sharper, sparser rustle from the canopy of the small stand of trees I was sitting under followed by the light and sparse sound of whatever bits that fell off in the breeze hitting the ground.
I walked about fifteen metres and the sound of the place changed completely. All the elements were still there, but now in different proportions and with emphasis on different parts. I walked around listening in different spots. Here the cars seem louder, here theres the hollow hum of an electrical transformer box with the other sounds just an accent to it, here is similar to there except the echoes are more pronounced.
I want to record these things over the same period of time from different spots around there. I think it'd be interesting to see how different the same sounds would sound.
