My Dying Bride - The Crown of Sympathy

"The mouths that dare not speak His name,
Behold them raised complete and fine.
The battle for our lives are oh so brief,
Take my hand and please walk with me.
When I was young the sun did burn my face,
I let its love and warmth wash over me...

*DOOM*"

It doesn't get any better than this. It just slows down and slows down and gets heavier and heavier, and still melodic...

Hod Me Down- Gin Blossoms

Another band I love too much.  This song amuses me.  It's the theme song for one of the characters that I write about.  He goes drinking a lot.  Actually, a lot of Gin Blossoms songs can be his theme song.

Birushanah - Akai Yama(excerpt)

I have just ordered their new album "Akai Yama" from Australia. They are a Japanese six-piece who play sludge metal with metal percussion and take inspiration from traditional music, complete with manic japanese vocals. In other words it is incredible.

Charlie Parker: volume 2 of the east coast Dial sessions, featuring J.J. Johnson.

What can I say? It's just perfect music. This volume contains an unusually high number of ballads: everyone knows Charlie Parker was wonderful, but his ballad playing is too overlooked, I think. Just as with the rest of his music, he completely re-defined the approach to playing a jazz ballad, and came out with something new and beautiful and incredibly moving.

Sigur Ros- Samskeyti

Few bands can get away with only 'riff' throughout the whole song. This song freaking owns. I love it how the release of all the tension is just that the piano line goes up one octave.

Edge of Sanity - Crimson

Oh man this is so good. I haven't listened to this properly for so long. So fucking good. One single 40 minute long song. Melodic Death Metal meets prog rock with a seasoning dash of goth. Opeths entire career outdone just as they were releasing their second album. I might just upload this, because anyone with even a passing interest in metal needs to hear this.

"A dark formation in the skies.
Unites the powers in her eyes.
Her soul's inhaling all the living light.
Bringing on the dark, eternal night."

Emperor - Beyond the Great Vast Forest

Masterful my favorite Emperor song, it's really interesting listening to the demo version and comparing it to the final version that ended up on In the Nightside Eclipse, the keys just propel the song into unparalled heights of awesomeness, the transformation is masterful, the whole riff that underpins the song, with the synth strings and the choir comming in over the top it's just majestic I don't know a better word to describe it. It really pisses me off when I hear people sneering at the use of keyboards in Black Metal, this album is proof of the wonders they can achieve.

Everytime I try and think of it, I come up with more examples of how, tastefully integrated, keyboards can make for awesome Black Metal than I do examples of how keyboards can ruin BM. It could of course have something to do with my tastes (I like Theatres Des Vampires, though I don't exactly consider them true norsk arysk black metal). 'In The Nightside Eclipse' and Sigh's 'Scorn Defeat' are always the first examples I bring up to the haters.

Edge of Sanity - Elegy

This band is so fucking good.

This is probably my favourite Atheist song. Here they find just the right balance between technique and melody.

I'm listening to the new Queens of the Stone Age album.  Still on the first song right now (titled Turnin' on the Screw).  I like it so far.  It's more of the same from them, which is to say, it doesn't sound like their other albums.  The whole album is up at http://qotsa.com/news/default.aspx?nid=8085 if you want to hear it.

Sick, Sick, Sick is a pretty badass song.

Deströyer 666 - Phoenix Rising

Destroyer 666 mix equal parts Black Metal Thrash and Nietzsche to produce some truly excellent metal. These guys are one of the greatest bands i have ever seen live the intensity of their show is just amazing, I just wish they would hurry up and release something new it's been 5 years since "Cold Steel for an Iron Age" was released

Oh to see our death as majesty
To look beyond our mortal tragedy
Set adrift on seas of infinity
Oh to see the terror of eternity...
before our eyes

Oh to be reborn in fire
Oh to reap the reward of power
Oh to be a sacrifice, a sacrifice...
To a god who sees through our eyes
to a higher self

"Let us chase the sky obscurers,
world blackeners, cloud procurers,
Let us clear the realm of heaven,
Let us roar with free spirits, who are beast,
Roars my bliss, as if storm driven" (Nietzsche)

Through the seas of bitter tears
Unto our death without fear
Sink in to the glowing flames
Knowing I will live again

I can feel the burning fire
Burning all I have been
As the flames take me higher
Rising on the burning wings...

RISING!

I'm listening to the (relatively) new Cradle of Filth album Thornography. I am incredibly impressed. More than anything it reminds me of Principle of Evil Made Flesh or Vempire mixed with 80s Thrash/Electro Goth. I can't for the life of me understand why nobody likes this album (though I accept that people don't). I have made it my study album for Statistics.

Favourite Tracks so far:
- Dirge Inferno
- Libertina Grimm
- The Foetus of a New Day Kicking

Holy crap, I just realised I still haven't listened to that album. I bought it six months ago. I generally can't understand why people don't like CoF, although they've dropped some shite albums (ie, the two before Thornography, which I suppose is what made me wary about putting it on). The vocals, man. Some of the cheesy keyboards in the earlier albums are kinda fun but when that little bitch starts yelping it just goes so wrong :( nails on a chalkboard.

Stonkin' great house CD this, can't remember if I got the name from the Justice thread here or elsewhere, but it was a solid rec. Great tunes.

I listen to a lot of BM and I'm not a  fan of COF at all. Probably doesn't help that they absolutely butchered one of my favorite songs (Hallowed be Thy Name). Cruelty and the Beast, the album about Elizabeth Bathory had some ok moments but not enough to really sell me on the band.

I can never hold that cover against them, because its the song that got me in to Iron Maiden in the first place. My early explorations into music were conducted in an extremely illogical and haphazard manner. Cradles covers actually helped me discover quite a few good bands: The Misfits, The Sisters of Mercy, Anathema, Sodom, Sabbat and Venom as well as Maiden. Not to mention the fact that Cradle of Filth were at least partly responsible for BOTH resurrections of Sabbat (The fact that Martin Walkyier recorded a song with them abrogates some of my guilt in liking them.) I'm not an obsessive fan of Cradle, but I will defend them to a good extent, especially to the extent to which their music has been critically misread. People on both sides of the fence often treat them as if they were trying to be members of the 'inner circle'. Never the case.

I get your point about the vocals.
