Yeah, recommend me some good bands from Australia please.

My post-WC match selection of Silverchair, The Vines and Cut Copy leaves a lot to be desired.

If anyone suggests Wolfmother, I will get angry.

Your favourite Nick Cave songs would also be appreciated.

This is useful: http://www.last.fm/tag/australian

I'd call Crowded House a NZ band though.

Magic Dirt
The Morning After Girls
The Avalanches
Something For Kate
Dr Octopus
Little Birdy
Love Outside Andromeda
The Lucksmiths
The Pictures
The Resin Dogs
St Ft Hick
You Am I

Thats about as decent a list as I can come up with at 4 in the morning, and without going too obscure.

all of which I agree with.  I also think that Nick Cave is one of the most over-rated of our musical acts, in whichever incarnation you want to suggest.

Other Australian acts to look for are Josh Pyke, Holly Throsby & Clare Bowditch.

My favourite Australian artists are Qua, Minit and Oren Ambarchi.

Hmm, actually, none of them are bands, sorry, and all instrumental.

Although Oren's Sun is pretty nice and I like his voice in the one track on which he sings.

I like some songs by Cut-Copy (the singles, really) and The Presets (The Girl and the Sea is beautiful!).

I really like The Lucksmiths and would instantly suggest them to anyone who likes a bit of twee(ish)-pop like Belle and Sebastian.

My fave Nick Cave songs are 'The Mercy Seat' and 'Henry Lee'. They do a great version of 'All Tomorrow's Parties' too.

New Buffalo

Does anyone have a song of theirs called 16 Beats? Please PM me if you do.

Thanks for all the bands so far- I know there's decent Australian music, I just can't find it!

P.S. It doesn't matter whether they're a band or a solo act or what. I just need good tunes!

Darren Hanlon is not a band, but I declare that he is for the purposes of this thread.

Also, I second the Lucksmiths very, very hard.

Edit:  Sodastream, too!

Australian bands... well, we are just over the ditch.
By association, some good New Zealand bands:

The Reduction Agents - They are like the Beatles on acid, really cool.

The Brunettes - Just finished a tour with Rilo Kelly, and before that, The Shins. One of sub-pops latest signings... they will give you a crush, I swear.

The Mint Chicks - Our countries premier post-punk band. Ramones/Buzzcocks fans need apply.

The Shaky Hands - Our countries up-and-coming post-punk band... for fans of Ex-Models, Gang of Four, etc... (www.theshakyhands.com - they don't have a cd yet, but have some recordings up)

They are all on myspace... have fun! :)
