Recommend me some music
« on: 19 Jun 2006, 12:24 »

My birthday's coming up in two weeks and I'm still not sure what I should get. I want a bunch of new CDs from bands I haven't heard before, but I don't know what to get.
Some bands/artists I like are (in no particular order):
Sufjan Stevens
The Decemberists
Iron and Wine
Iron Maiden
Anti-Flag
All Girl Summer Fun Band
Bright Eyes
Dirty Pretty Things / The Libertines
Apples in Stereo
Neutral Milk Hotel
Architecture in Helsinki
Bad Religion
Band of Horses
Beck
Belle and Sebastian
The Dandy Warhols
Sonic Youth
The Fiery Furnaces
The Futureheads
The Flaming Lips
Jeff Buckley
Modest Mouse
The New Pornographers
The Shins
System of a Down
The Zutons
LCD Soundsystem

I do not like:
Broken Social Scene (Only heard the self-titled album)
The Liars (I've only heard Drum's not Dead)
The Arctic Monkeys

I'm pretty open minded to what to get. I'm especially interested in adding some good rap (of which I know none, as of yet) and maybe some dance.

In no particular order:

Regina Spektor
Aloha
TV on the Radio
Figurines
Asobi Seksu
Camera Obscura (yes I know it's advertised on indieclick)
Wilderness
Final Fantasy
Islands
The New Pornographers (I'm going to disagree with E. Spaceman and say that I think Neko Case's finest stuff has been as a part of the New Pornographers.  Her solo stuff is much closer to alt-country -- which if you like that genre is good -- I don't particularly.  Mass Romantic, on the other hand, is just plain fucking amazing).
Super Furry Animals
Yo La Tango
Les Savy Fav (maybe)

Our tastes are very similar, so I'm pretty confident that you're going to like most of these.

For good "rap" (really indie or instrumental hip hop) check out:
Aceyalone & RJD2 -- Magnificent City
MIA & Diplo -- Piracy = Terrorism
Lady Sovereign -- Vertically Challenged
DJ Shadow -- One Night in Bangkok (pirated); Brain Freeze (don't bother trying to buy it, just download).
DJ Krush -- practically anything (you'll either like it or you won't) but particularly Shinso
RJD2 -- Practically anything, particularly Deadringer

For good dance (really IDM or EBM) check out:
Aphex Twin
Akufen
Underworld

I second the Super Furry Animals.

Louis Logic is good rap, even (perhaps especially) when he's offensive.

Aside from that, well ... I don't think I'll be much help.  I listen to stoner rock,  psychedelic anything, a lot of random genreless things, and basically a long list of things you probably wouldn't find interesting in the slightest.  I have to try, though, so (limiting myself to bands that play songs less than 10 minutes long for the most part) ...

Dead Meadow (non-negotiable)
13th Floor Elevators
Jack Rose
John Fahey
Parchman Farm
Pearls and Brass
Feathers

I might put some more up once I see where this thread is going.

Based on your like of Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens, I suggest Red House Painters and/or Sun Kil Moon. These are both Mark Kozelek bands and play amazing alt-country/slow rock/folk. Go with Ocean Beach for the RHPs and Ghosts of the Great Highway for SKM.

Also, based on your like of Flaming Lips and Fiery Furnaces and such: Deerhoof. Because they rule.

Alright I don't know how smart I am doing this but I mean I'd like some ... metal reccomendations Khar. I didn't feel like starting my own thread so I figured I'd hijack this. http://www.last.fm/user/patneuf101/ that's my last.fm page which is a semi-accurate representation of what I listen to, and I mean I know you enjoy educated others on the metal also if you/others could tell me where to get (aka download)  this stuff it would be great. I thank you/others in advance very much.

Well, I can't really make out any sort of guide to what sort of metal you'd like from that (though I'm guessing I can rule out gore metal.) Maybe start with some more classic metal/hard rock sort of stuff:

Black Sabbath - Paranoid/Black Sabbath/Master of Reality
Motorhead - No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith/Bomber/Ace of Spades
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son/Powerslave
Judas Priest - British Steel/Sad Wings of Destiny
Orange Goblin - Frequencies From Planet 10/The Big Black
Hawkwind - Space Ritual/Doremi Fasol Latido
Saxon - Denim and Leather/And The Bands Played On
Cathedral - The Carnival Bizarre/The Garden of Unearthly Delights
Running Wild - Under Jolly Roger/Branded and Exiled

None of those should be too hard to get hold of on any p2p network, nor any record store come to that. If you don't like a single album on that list, then basically you'd probably best not listen to metal.

I see a lot of indie rock bands on there, but not Pixies. If you haven't already checked them out, you should do so as soon as possible.

People are saying too much. Get these 3 albums (click album covers for links, and proof that you can get each pretty ding-dang cheap.):

The Sugarplastic - Bang, The Earth Is Round
This you will like. It is in the same vein as The New Pornographers, The Apples In Stereo, or The Shins. If you listen to or have ever listened XTC, this is like a cuter, less spastic version of them. Ben Eshbach is kind of this magical songwriter who combines the best elements of every Beatle. As you can see, you can get it pretty cheap, so goddam get it.

alaska! - Rescue Through Tomahawk
This dark, rocktastic alternative will take steal your love away from the Dandy Warhols in a sniggity snap. I can't really think of anything else on your list that is really like them, but there are definately elements of a lot of stuff you say you like. "Real Is Your Control" and "The Light" are the definate standout tracks, download them, and if you like 'em, get the album.

Built To Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love
Basically this is a band you need to be listening to. They are heavy inspirations on a lot of stuff on your list, and they are also damn fantastic. All their earlier stuff is extremely terrific (their later stuff is good too, but not as good as the earlier albums), but this is the album I started on and it worked great for me, so I hope it'll work great for you.

KEEP IN MIND THAT ALL THREE OF THESE TOGETHER USED WILL COST YOU LESS THAN 10 DOLLARS

Seriously, buy this stuff, enjoy. Happy Birthday.

I say the debut by Black Lungs when it comes out this summer, and until then (seein' as how you've got a bit of punk in there) Dead Letter Dept., Bombs Over Providence, and Closet Monster.

Those'll probably be easier to find if you live in Canada...

Oh, and Mike Park... he's awesome (whether it be in the Chinkees, the Bruce Lee Band, or Solo). As for hip-hop, "Three Feet High And Rising" by De La Soul is pretty sweet.

Okay, that's a lot of bands to sift through
So far I've listened to Neko Case, whom I've only heard a couple songs, but didn't like them. Built to Spill, who I've only heard Big Dipper, but love it. Louis Logic, who I'm currently trying to figure out whether Coochie Coup is serious, and thus whether it is good or not.

I'm going to give some rather different suggestions, just for a change of pace.

Nathan Haines
Esbjörn Svensson's Trio
Dizzy Gillespie Quintet/Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra
John Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen
Henry Butler
Thelonius Monk Quartet

It's mostly crazy jazz music that probably won't be to your taste, but would be good to listen to anyway for horizon broadening, and you'll probably enjoy Nathan Haines and John Cleary anyway, them being more rock and funk influenced.

Heh, music journalism sites, I find, rarely have the same opinion as me, so there's very little point in reading them.  And, anyway, unlike TMT, most music journalism doesn't tell you what bands are similar to the one they're reviewing. Or, for that matter (I find, especially in the case of PF) the actual sound of the music is rarely talked about in much detail. From reading purely PF, someobdy could be lead to believe that Rather Ripped and Murray Street are similar albums.

It'd be just swell if people's recomendations were more like La Creme's. It's much easier to find out what I should look for first. And, most importantly, there aren't 3000 bands to sift through.

Yes, like I said before, I've checked out Neko Case, Louis Logic and several others. It's just that there's so many artists there, and most of them have several albums. Each of these albums is considered to be their 'best' by different journalism sites. And then there's which song on those album's is the best, and most representative of their music style. The bands on the whole haven't been compared to the bands in my list, which results in me just guessing how much I may like them over other recommended bands, so I don't know who to try first.
At the moment, it's going to take ages to go through all the recomendations, and download a couple of tracks. Those tracks may be totally awful compared to the rest of their stuff, so I miss out on what is potentially a great band.
You see the problem with just listing bands, no?
