...but please, no Journey.

So I'm headed off on Saturday to visit a friend in San Francisco. It's a long and boring flight from Chicago to SF, so I consult the QC Forumites for music advice. I have an mp3 player I'm taking with me, but I want to know what I should put on it I don't already have.

To give you a list of bands I like, albums I love, stuff I adore, I present you with this list. Please advise me on similar music, what else you think I'd like, what you like, or just insult my tastes. Whatever, I'm a fairly genial guy.

Please don't think I'm trying to show my indie rock cred. I'm not indie, I'm not a scenester, I'm not trying to show off how big my e-wang is. I just want some advice on stuff I'm missing out on.

For a long road trip like that I'd definitely pick up the album "Riding With the King" by B.B. King and Eric Clapton. It's a completely ace road trip album.

Pretty much anything by Muddy Waters.  Blues is the ultimate travelling music; electric blues doubly so.

Get the new TV on the Radio album, Return To Cookie Mountain. It's as good as, if not better than, Desperate Youth...

Also try Cat Power (album: You Are Free) or Jolie Holland (album: Escondida) or Neko Case (album: Fox Confessor Brings The Flood) for the "female vocalist" thing.

I was kinda loathe to use the term female vocalist because it's generic and not very descriptive: "It is a woman with a voice" does not shed a lot of light on the kind of music they make.

The reason I used it was to link these artists to Mr mberan's first post, and his expressed like of female vocalists.

So…
- Cat Power plays mostly introspective piano-based songs and she has a wonderfully husky voice.
- Jolie Holland does kinda jazz/country/folk stuff, and she has a style that reminds me of Tom Waits, though maybe not in the way you would think. Her phrasing and accent are very unique.
- Neko Case is in the New Pornographers, but her solo stuff is quite different to the New Porno's power-pop -- hers is more a kind of dark, late-night country. Neko's voice is pretty powerful and she is a great lyricist too.

I'm not going to pretend to know much about most of that music, but based on the Pink Floyd/Roger Waters you might like some of the 70s prog movement. Go for King Crimson, Yes, Rush, and the Genesis albums "Nursery Cryme", "Foxtrot", "Selling England by the Pound", and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".

I have it on good authority that Parliament-Funkadelic is the worst music for driving to . . . that is, unless you enjoy swerving from side to side on the road as you swing the steering wheel back and forth in time with the beat.

Start off by getting Tyranny of Distance by Ted Leo because goddamn are you missing out.

Or maybe I just love that CD too much.

Also seconding Fu Manchu and appending Kyuss. Stoner rock was invented to liven up long road trips/journeys. And weed-smoking sessions I guess.

I LOVE THEM. and now i love you. The Dandy Warhols Come Down is another good album, though 13 is definitely their best.

find the song Crossroads by Eric Clapton/Cream (it's both, but i found it under Clapton). it is an awesome song. i promise. and if you like blues, Muddy Waters is a must. someone else said him, and i second it. and The Black Keys you might like, especially the album Rubber Factory.

get some Cake, if you like them. they are fun. maybe some Wolfmother?

Don't forget to scan the radio for weird but fun local stations we have a Ukrainian wedding music channel and mexican bluegrass channels where I'm from.

That's what I always do on trips anyways, it helps if your the passanger though because some of the good ones are hard to find without crashing.

have you thought about classical music? stuff from the romantic and impressionist periods are pretty good to listen to on long trips. or if you like electronica, there's a local dj here who does hour-long trance sets that i like. while i was going to china / flying around china these were very useful (: if you're interested you can pm me for some mp3s.

Yes.

Just get as much post-rock as you can.

Emerson, Lake, And Palmer's "Trilogy" is also a great driving and journeying album.

My two favorite hiway driving albums are "Exquisite Fucking Boredom" by Skullflower and "Live in Italy" by LOOP. Both are really heavy and repetitive trance rock stuff. I also find a lot of krautrock is pretty appropriate for travelling especially Neu's first album and anything by Kraftwerk.

Queen is surprisingly good music for driving. Especially the ones that are ridiculously cheesy-sounding love songs. Of course, for this to be any fun, you have to have somebody in the car with you.

Another good group for such things would be The Eagles. Unless, of course, you don't like them. Some people love them, some people want to stab them to death with salad forks. If you do like them, though, they are a must on any road trip.

Glenn Miller is a must-have. Cake as well. There's a Scottish rock group called Runrig, who are brilliant. Their new lead vocalist has a kindof annoying voice (Donnie Munro had this powerful gunboat of a voice) and it sounds kindof wimpy, but the music is still good.

Other good driving music is the early, more Texas-blues stuff of ZZ Top. Billy Gibbons does some EPIC guitar work, so if you dig Zeppelin, you'll adore Top.

I'm going to stop being a threadjack whore. Hope you agree with my suggestions, I think with your list you might like most of them.

EDIT: Cowboy Bebop soundtrack music is AWESOME.

Also it is fun to drive to showtunes. Avenue Q, Chicago, and Jesus Christ Superstar are good places to start.
