What music do you listen to to go to sleep?  I have found that Death Cab works quite well, for obvious reasons.  A few other artists that have helped me sleep (for I am a raging insomniac) are the Decemberists and David Bowie.

But, the all-time greatest band to listed to while going to sleep is DragonForce.  I have no idea how they helpe me to fall asleep, but they do.

Of course, DragonForce may be the greatest band to listen to while doing anything.

hmm. Interestingly, when i end up programming all night/early morning long, i don't know why, but i end up always putting on DragonForce and David Bowie.
lol, maybe im secretly trying to maske myself sleep?
Maybe Godsmack would do as the singing tone stays quite constant ...
One things for sure .. NOT Alice in Chains; The repeating patterns that seem to make their best songs would keep me from going to sleep.

I second Death Cab for Cutie. Gibbard's voice lulls me to sleep better than NyQuil, so that is also a vote for The Postal Service. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah puts me to sleep really quickly, too. I think I get hypnotized by the vocals.

After downloading some of their music, I have to agree with Architecture in Helsinki. I haven't slept to it yet, but it's definitely putting me in the mood for sleep.

Aside from them, however, I would suggest Mogwai.

Cutting people off at the pass! Brian Eno is not sleepy music people! hah. I guess if you want it to be, sure. But especially not Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), Another Green World, and Before and After Science (Which are alllllll fucking killer and "not ambient" to "only slightly ambient")

Mmmm sleeping music. Not sure tbh, some Pink Floyd is so relaxing it makes you sleepy. As much as I love Dragonforce I don't think they make me want to go to sleep, more like jump out of bed and rock out.

If a band puts you to sleep, you shouldn't be listenning to them. I put music on to stay awake.
Oddly enough, some of the music mentioned in this thread.

You're not an insomniac if you go to sleep, that makes you a wannabe. If you wanna do it right, don't sleep.
And if music is all it takes you put you out, you're not a real insomniac either.

Don't say 'I'm a raging insomniac' unless you haven't slept in over 2 weeks.

I don't listen to music to get to sleep generally, but if I was to, I imagine Sigur Ros would be a good choice.

And hey, if you're aiming for a boredom-induced coma, try Coldplay.

Some bands are like help me get to sleep, but none make me asleep. Those bands tat help me fall asleep are some of my favourites, and there is a sense of comfort and security in listening to them, they help me get my mind away from the troubles of life.

A carefully compiled selection of Bedhead songs.  Carefully compiled because quite a few of their songs end up very loud and un-sleep-conducive.

Man, I kinda hate how Merzbow has just become a hipster joke.

If I fall asleep to music (the BBC World Service often does me) it'll probably be to the selected (ie more somnolent) works of artists like:

Bauhaus
Black Sabbath
Blackmore's Night
Bob Dylan
British Sea Power
Burzum
Current 93 (All of 'All the Pretty Little Horses' is incredible for sleeping)
The Cocteau Twins
Dead Can Dance
Death in June
Finntroll (Basically just the Visor Om Slutet EP)
Gae Bolg
G/Z/R
Lacrimosa
Mortiis
Orange Goblin
Scientist
Sol Invictus
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows
Strawbs
Swans
Tann-Hauser Gate
Scott Walker

...and so forth.

Generally I can't sleep if I'm listening to music because I start listening too intently, and the music, not the sleeping, becomes my main priority.

However, recently I have been putting on Mogwai's 4 Satin EP at low volume when I go to bed. It's three tracks at 30 minutes, with the last song breaking down into a solid wave of distortion. By the time track three finishes I'm already out cold.

I used to listen to Kid A in bed a lot (I used to listen to it a lot full stop), and 'Treefingers' was great to sleep to (for obvious reasons I guess), but once 'Optimistic' started I would be jolted back into consciousness. Then I would fall asleep again at the end of 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' and the damn "secret track" bit would wake me up.

So maybe put 'Treefingers' on repeat for sleep?

No, it's not what I mean. It's like, you ask for something to sleep to, someone goes 'MERZBOW OLOL'. Some love music? 'MERZBOW OLOL'. It's like the standard idiotic response to any musical query. Merzbow is the new Anal Cunt or something, it's ridiculous.

I mean, why not Whitehouse? AT LEAST HAVE SOME VARIETY GUYS JEEZ.

Someone's already mentioned Architecture in Helskini, and that works for me too.

Also, either of Kyuss's two middle albums (Blues for the Red Sun and Sky Valley) seem to do well for me.  They chill me out so completely that I can generally nod off to sleep if I'm lying down/sitting any place comfortable.

I am not sure why it does it, because the music is quite heavy.  It's rather bass-heavy and slow though, so that might have something to do with it.  I have a feeling that the same thing is why Khar's recommended Black Sabbath.  I haven't listened to much Sabbath, but what I have heard of it is kind of rolling-bass heavy.  Also, my parents would listen to Kyuss and tell me it reminded them of it.

There is no way I would be able to fall asleep to Architecture in Helsinki. Listening to them just makes me want to dance around dorkily.

One album I've been using lately is Alarm Agents by DI6 and Boyd Rice. It's really good, it mmade me have odd dreams though. It may have been that it started playing "The MAn Who Laughs" in repeat.

Oddly, I discovered that Burzum of all things is great resting music! (Filosofem at least). It's so bizarrely soothing when I'm tired, it totally put me to sleep on a bus last week.

Edit: I have just noticed that it's been mentioned, maybe it is not so unusual?

I Sleep to Filosofem all the time, great album for helping me to drift off especially when I'm stressed about something.

A fine day to exit by Anathema is another album I've been sleeping too for years, its just so serene and peaceful.

Another good one for me is the second disc of six degrees of inner turbulence by Dream Theatre.

Probably the oddest album I've fallen to sleep listening too is Morbid Angel's Blessed are the Sick

Burzum? For sleeping?

Huh.

Anyway, I've been known to fall asleep listening to Rammstein so I don't know how much I can help, but here's some things that make me feel comfortable and relaxed:

Alice In Chains - Unplugged
Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Beck - Mutations
Loreena McKennit - The Book Of Secrets

Especially Mutations seems to work for me.

Burzum? For sleeping?

Burzum is very minamilist and repetitive Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem are fairly ambient albums as well, with a fair bit of keyboards throughout. Filosofem has that 25 minute ambient synth instrumental in the middle of the album as well. Which makes it perfect for sleeping to. The Last two Burzum albums are done entirely on keyboard with no vocals (the first one is all in midi), which make them very good bed time music as well. I think the key to good sleeping music is having it a a relatively low volume so it's just audible, repetitive song structures are a must as well.

Most of the music that I listen to I buy for the purpose of relaxing me. That said, I try and find a night every now and then when I can fall asleep to some of my fav bands/groups (my stereo is also my alarm. I can't listen to something and have my alarm set at the same time :( ).

For those who don't mind some archaic choral stuff the Tallis Scholars have some great rennaisance stuff to sleep to (great for reading too). Delerium (but only Semantic Spaces and Karma) is also good sleep/relax music. Robert Miles' 2nd CD 23am is excellent bedtime fare. His 3rd CD Organik will likely give you Zombie horror movie dreams though. If all else fails, Eva Cassidy (R.I.P.) will definitely lull you to dreamland.

But good music to chillax to:

Iron and Wine, Woman King
Any Sigur Ros album

Any Postal Service album (Deathcab just irritates me to no end)
Coldplay, A Rush of Blood to the Head

Is their first album, Fingers Crossed, avalibile where you are? Its alot more peaceful and calm and nice and pretty and wonderful, and it evelopes you in a warm loving blanket of happy peacefulness and love and nice prettiness.

I'm, um, rather obsessessed with that band
