Okay what the fuck.
« on: 05 Jul 2006, 20:14 »

Look, it is apparent that this forum has some of the shitest taste in music ever, but if Nirvana (spit) beat fucking JOY DIVISION, I shall personally track down and kill everyone who voted for Nirvana.

You seen the Crow? It will be like the Crow, with a better soundtrack.

Seriously, every day, Ian Curtis takes a dump in heaven, and it lands on Kurt Cobains head in hell.

I don't idolise anyone except Martin Walkyier and Robert Wilson.

But seriously, people, Joy Division!

We're talking about one of the bands that forged everything good about the eighties versus the band that formed everything bad about the nineties.

A vote for Nirvana is a vote for Creed.

Okay, allow me to explain myself.
Nirvana were ever so vital in shaping my latter musical appreciations. Often I fear that I would still be listening to top 40 pop songs were it not for Kurt and the gang.
You have to understand that I was very young at the time and anything with the remotest “edge” would have swayed me, it just happened to be Nirvana.
Now, these days I might even be able to say that I enjoy the music of Joy Division better than Nirvana. But they are a relatively new discovery for me, only having first heard them about 2 years ago.
I simply cant regard most bands, however good they may be, higher than a band which had such a vital role in my musical education.

So there.

Screw that logic.  It's basically the same with me (Nirvana are responsible for my appreciation of modern music), but I can recognize Joy Division as the better band, and I've moved on from Nirvana for the most part.  They still make a great listen every once and a while, but there's no way that I'd choose them over Joy Division.

Of course, I could get behind with Tommy on the strategic voting, but I don't like Fugazi that much, though I'll still vote for them if they're against Joy Division.

I understand what you mean, but I don't understand why you're voting for those reasons. With the QC Battle of teh Bands, I'm voting on

a.) which band has the most to contribute culturally (bonus points for spawning off good bands, but it's mostly just bringing something new to the table)
b.) which band is just generally "better"

I understand how certain bands you have to pay homage to because they set you on the right path, but I don't really think that's the proper way of voting. Because in all honesty, my Nirvana is Garbage. Garbage is the first rock band I ever liked. As a kid, I went straight from Spice World to Version 2.0, but if you pit Garbage, my first ever rock band and favourite band for a quarter of my life, against Joy Division, whom I only truly got into in the past six months, I'd still vote Joy Division, because- c'mon. They really do offer more, even though they weren't that influential in changing my music taste.

i have all nirvana cd's, i have almost all joy division cd's. i like nevermind a little bit better than closer, i like in utero a little bit better than unknown pleasures and i like substance just as much as the best tracks from the rest of nirvana combined so nirvana wins. i hate this choice because if it was up to me they'd probably both end in the top 4.

Laying the blame of bad music in the late 90's on Nirvana is about as ignorant as the folks who blamed the black plague on cats and witchs instead of fleas.  It's almost as silly as debating which country first came up with punk or such shit.  MAN.

Also, I'm sure Curtis and Cobain would probably have got along pretty well and exchanged suicide notes or at least realized their enviorments where similar in the fact they both where economicly fucked but yeah.  Shitcocks and such non-sense!

and the other bands you named started in the 60's  (not knowing the fugs though)
also, the sex pistols started in 1975 so that difference isn't really there. and i think that the sex pistols are a perfect example of punk while joy division and at least half of wire's stuff is not punk. also, it's a bit strange to call the sex pistols not punk but do call PIL (also with johnny rotten) punk. the clash is definitly punk as well but you have a point with the jam. so let's switch that to the buzzcocks (are they english anyway?)

edit: correction; the new york dolls started in 1971

Man, I'm pretty tired of all this hipster position on The Sex Pistols. Fact is, most actual punks I know consider them punk, and even more so back when they were actually around. They were considered a big part of the punk scene in England at the time, and have only been retro-actively written out of punk by people with no actual involvement in it. I'm not denying that they were 'manufactured', but they still fucking sounded punk, and they were still just as integral to what happened in '77 as any other band. They were the guys that actually got out there and scared and inspired people. You may piss and moan, but the Sex Pistols did more for the continuing legacy of punk than the vast majority of other punk bands.

Pretty much all I need is the intro to Cock Sparrers live version of 'Where Are They Now?': "Bands like us, bands like Business, bands like the Clash, Bands like the Sex Pistols."

Saying the Sex Pistols weren't punk is like saying Elvis wasn't rock and roll. Even if you could gather a convincing argument, it would make no sense from the viewpoint of the history of music.

I like the culture as well, I'm just saying that the 'DIY' nature didn't really get codified in the popular (or should that be unpopular?) consciousness till after the Sex Pistols got big, so it's kind of unfair to judge them by that. It's nothing like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth compared to real black metal: you're talking about The Sex Pistols as if, musically, they were a pop-punk band, which they weren't. Given that the Bromley contingent gathered round them, they were pretty much essential to the old 'spirit of 77'. Few punk bands can escape the direct or indirect influence of this clique. Also, comparing them to the Monkees is a bit steep, as they were actually together in a form when McLaren became their manager, and also McLaren was hardly some faceless record exec: he was the manager of a rock and roll clothing store, and an International Situationalist. He held an audition for Johnny Rotten but, if my music trivia memory holds, he was already a regular at McLarens shop and the audition consisted of singing along to 'I'm Eighteen' on the Jukebox.

I do think the Clash are rubbish though. Or at least severely over-rated. And I don't consider the Sex Pistols to 'define' punk, I just consider them to be pretty damn important to its history.

I think I remember reading or hearing somewhere Lydon saying that they didn't even think of themselves as punk and that no one ever used the term.

Crass really did more for the 'DIY" nature of punk.  The Pistols were signed to two record labels.  Crass started their own.  I always thought of the Pistols as more or less an almost art school experiment of sorts.

Anyway.  Sillyness.
