So I've been trying out thrash/powerviolence lately, and I can't say I'm a fan. Most of it just sounds like 30 seconds of screaming and guitar feedback, and it's just overall clumsy and overdone.
But, it's the style that underground punk is heading towards, so can anyone recommend some thrash/powerviolence that's actually listenable? As in, "wow this sounds like a short, violent song," as opposed to "wow, this sounds like a punk band and their equipment falling down the stairs." And can anyone explain why anyone likes it in the first place?

It would be a lot cooler if they called it "ultraviolence". At least then people might mistake it for a Burgess reference and not think the entire scene was culturally illiterate.

...but they are, pretty much. Powerviolence is metal for teenage scenesters who are scared of real metal, because real metalheads are creepy.

On the otherhand I imagine the mindset is more: KILLE GROWL LOUD NOISES!!!!!! And less some pseudo-intellectual modernist bullshit about challenging conceptions of music. The first is mindless and dull but the latter would be embaressing.

well powerviolence was a joke genre name, was pretty different from "thrash" (unless you consider stuff like charles bronson pv, which isn't actually correct) and no one has played anything that could be called "powerviolence" in nearly a decade so I don't see how it could be considered the shape of things to come.
but if you do what to listen to it, try man is the bastard (as that other guy said, though ignore his other two recommendations), crossed out and suppression.

In that case, I'd suggest you email To Live A Lie records and tell them they're 10 years out of date.

And generally, I do see the independent punk scene moving towards thrash, which is unfortunate. But it's better than tired Rolling Stones riffs, I guess.

Weekend Nachos is a local band that I hear is sorta big.

I thought "Powerviolence" was an actual genre, but "emoviolence" was a joke name... whatever, emoviolence is awesome anyways.

The definitive band of the genre would be called 'Alex and the Droogs'. Their first album would be called "Ludovico's Technique' and their hit singles would be "The Old In-Out' and 'A Real Horroshow Tolchock'.

I would totally listen to that band.

That band already exist, and they're called The Lower Class Brats.

Also, power electronics > power violence. Then again I never quite got the distinction between power violence and punky grindcore, if indeed there is one. Seriously though, more people need to listen to stuff like Navicon Torture Technologies, Whitehouse, Sutcliffe Jügend, Deathpile and Folkstorm.

i don't care what words some bullshit label throws around to sell records. the only drawback is that it confuses people, i guess, but it really isn't that important.
any direction punk chooses to move in can only make it better at this point. though, again, trash and punk is nothing new. and probably can't get any better than when infest did it however long ago.

there isn't any relation to powerviolence and power electronics. though i can't argue with a whitehouse recommendation.
"punky grindcore" and genres like that aren't legitimate but just an adjective informally tacked on to an already ducious genre name.

I know there's no connection, I just thought it would be nice if there was one post about noise on this forum that wasn't just about Merzbow. Also, 'punky grindcore' isn't a genre so much as a description. You know how some grind is more punky, some grind more death metaly, some grind more jazzy, etc.

second of all, "real" metalheads are not "creepy" in the least. they're pussies who smoke weed and spend 5 years trying to learn the intro or the most popular guitar wankery technique to one of several metallica songs that were written before 1989 or slayer songs that were written between the hell awaits and reign in blood era. they're all a bunch of dorks who sit around and play D&D 24/7.

Apart from Naked City, there's Watch Me Burn, Cause For Effect, Le Scrawl and a few others. I was mainly referring to the jazz-influenced technical guitar-work a lot of better grind bands use, however.

grind bands don't use jazz-influenced technical guitar-work, though......... i do know what i'm talking about. i haven't really gotten too into grind, but i find out whatever info i can find if i am interested in or intrigued by it.

The Mean Reds (half thrash/"pv", half electric lullaby)

Issei Sagawa actually has a few (i think. i know there is at least one) members from the mean reds. they were formed when the mean reds broke up.
and on an interesting side note; they were named after a japanese cannibal of the same name who is now a celebrity in japan after escaping prosecution for killing and eating a fellow student at the school he was attending.

Look, I have barely made an effort to get into grind but I know that some bands incorporate avant-garde jazz elements. It happens.

Also, this thread might get me into some more thrash/grind/powerviolence. And I think if "powerviolence" fits a certain sound, then what the fuck, why not use it?
