It is pretty dang good.

I still find black metal vocalists kind of silly, though.

It is a pretty awesome album.

I like A Pale Folklore more though.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Yeah. When you are at the point where you're taking BM vocalists seriously, you need to stop.

You guys mean that cutting yourself on stage, throwing goat heads at the crowd and having your suicide note say "sorry for all the blood" is'nt proof of pure genius?*

Also, I'm stoping myself from downloading Agalloch's new album every time I open Soulseek. I promised mysef that I'll buy it as soon as it comes out.

*I'm so glad there ar'nt any Mayhem purist on these boards because they'll have my stabed at my doorstep.

Ashes Against the Grain had a bit too much straight up Godspeed You! Black Emperorey post-rock, not enough of the heavenly blend of Sol Invictus, Pink Floyd, Ulver and Swans that made them one of my favourite bands of all time.

Misereatur: Necrobutcher told me to tell you that your severed sheeps head will arrive within 7-10 working days.

Though, seriously, I don't like people dissing Dead. Euronymus, yes. He was a complete asshole, but not Dead. It's just...something you don't do. It's not kind. Guy was completely and utterly insane and got at least driven to suicide by Euronymus. I know people convinced Euronymus actually assisted, though I doubt that, as any real suspicion at the time was sure to have been pursued by the Norwegian police with extreme prejudice.

As for black metal vocalists, it depends entirely on what they're doing. Something like Varg Vikernes vocals, which were basically just screaming out his warped little nazi soul till he started to cough up blood, something with real emotion, now that I can respect, or, say, someone like Nattefrost who can pull off genuinely sick, diseased, evil sounding shit. Beat on the cookie monsters all you like though.

Dead was the first Mayhem member that poped to my head at the time. Now that I think about it I should have joked about Varg being a stabing nazi insted.
I feel like an ass now, I'm sorry guys.

As a black metal fan, I feel obliged to defend my genre here.  The vocals can be an aquired taste I'll give you that, though I just can't imagine the music would be the same with traditional singing.

People who go on about Eurynomous' 'murder, Dead's suicide etc are missing the point of BM, unfortunately the genre's infamous for those reasons and cause a lot of people to judge the music prematurally without understanding it.

A lot of shitty music has been released trying to capitalize on the hype (the corpse paint = sales crowd) and sure there are a lot of idiots out there who endlessly felate bands like Mayhem. There are also a lot of good innovative bands who have emerged from Black metal, bands like Ulver, Thorns, Emperor, Samael, Summoning, Beherit, Blut aus Nord and yes even Burzum.

A lot of Black Metal bands also have very well written lyrics as well, better then most other metal genres anyway.

I'm not really familiar enough with Agalloch's catalogue to comment on the voclas they use on the album I've heard (Pale Folklore) sounded excellent to me, the album had a similar vibe to the first Ulver album (Bergtatt).

Hey, I was'nt dissing black metal. I'm a fan of some of the bands you listed too. I just hate it when artists (yes, I consider musicians of any genre artists) take themself too seriously.
I should'nt have ripped on Dead. I should have ripped on Varg Vikernes because he takes himself way too seriously.

Now lets talk about Agalloch.

You really should. The Mantle is calmer, more drawn out whereas Pale Folklore is more metal. Both are a lot folkier than Ashes.

Agalloch is awesome for sure, but this album is a little different than their earlier stuff. Personally, I probably prefer their earlier work a bit more, but that doesn't mean this album isn't great.

Bought "Ashes Against The Grain" yesterday, listening to it the first time now. It's freakin gorgeous, even if Black Metal vocalists make me chortle.

Nothing wrong with a good chortle every now and again.

there's a video somewhere of a guy in corpse paint showing up on what I think was Dutch Idol, trying to black vocals.  at one point it looked like he was starting to throw up.  but yeah, Ashes was pretty nice.

A lot of bands use Clean Vocals though not exclusively. The 'Viking' Bathory albums featured Quorthons rather unique sounding clean vocals. Some Emperor stuff had Ihsahn's singing clean vocals on it.

If you're talking about using clean vocals exclusively, hmm if you consider Kveldessanger to be a BM album, from memory I don't think Garm does any distorted vocals on that one. Some Primordial stuff I guess you'd say was clean (their album "A Journey's End" is highly reccomended). Mercyful Fate could be called clean singing, albeit with a lot of fallseto.

To be honest I don't pay a huge amount of attention to the vocals when I listened to most metal.
