Mac. Hard drive. Wtf.

Corrupted drive, can't be found even when I try to use it as an external. I've sent it off to Silicon Valley for some extra-special data recovery, but I dunno. Anyone want to help me out? Got any deals on new hard drives I could possibly capitalise on?

Hey everyone, I need to buy some new bookshelves. When I get back from Ikea and put them together you're all invited to the bookshelf launch party.

What sort of drive? External? Internal 3.5" (desktop)? Internal 2.5" (laptop)?

<edit>
iirc it's an iBook, no? That'll be a bit expensive to replace compared to a desktop drive :(

Internal, ibook g4. It'll boot from cds, so that drive is fine. But no one was ever very specific in telling me precisely why the hard drive couldn't be found.

Seriously, apple. The balls.

Busted drives happen. In general I get pissed if they last less than 3 years, and I'm surprised and pleased when they last more than 5.

DealMac is pretty good, check froogle.google.com as well; you're looking for a 2.5" hard drive. 5400rpm or faster is probably nice, but any speed will do. Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, and a few others are pretty reputable brands.

Thank you, Catfish_Man and Valrus!

So, uh, anybody do data recovery as a hobby?

No, normally when things like that happen I feel pissed, and then I decide to be depressed for a little bit.  Then I yell at the computer about how I won't let it win and that I'll find it all again and more.  I then spend the next week putting my bandwith to good use.

This is what is wrong with it.

The Apple hard drive has intermittent read errors and software structure damage due to physical bad sectors.

Now, she bought the iBook used but still in the shrink wrap.  However, further examination has shown that the harddrive was replaced once already, so I honestly have no clue what the real history of the machine is.
