We've all had a friend introduce us to a band that we would have never found out about normally that grew on us, or so I imagine. :O  DISCUSS.

I started listening to The Strokes a lot because a friend of mine said "This stuff grows on you, man."  And at first, didn't really care for them outside of a few songs, but now, like... I easily consider them in my top 5 to listen to.

probably 90% of my favorite bands are ones that me and an online buddy of mine have shared with each other, don't really keep track of which went which way.

My friends don't have particularly good taste in music.  I get most of my recommendations from the internet.

Grateful Dead and Gang of Four. (same friend).  He smokes much of the Mary-Jane.  Which leads to musical tastes that I sometimes am wary of.  Those turned out to be amazing, though.

Liquid Tension Experiment:  I ended up discussing music with a friend of mine and I mentioned that I liked post-rock.  He asked me to explain what post rock was so I did to the best of my ability, he then told me that since I like post-rock and metal I should like Liquid Tension Experiment.

Marilyn Manson:  At first I didn't like anything about Marilyn Manson.  After spending some time with a few of my friends and actually giving his music a chance I found that I liked it.  I then went on to find more of is work and learn a little bit more about the guy himself.  Now I have a lot of respect for the guy.

The Strokes:  After seeing the reaction to this mention earlier I was hesitent to mention this particular band.  However in the timeline that has accompanied my musical taste they played an important part.  I was coming out of a phase that was comprised of bands like Slipknot and Linkin Park (I know, nothing alike but bear with me).  After listening to the Strokes a bit I decided to go out and look for other bands like them and also when people would say "They sound just like X band" I would go and find songs by X band.

Flogging Molly: I remember sitting there talking with a friend a long time ago and he was talking about he just want to an awesome show.  So of course I ask who he went to see and he replied with Flogging Molly.  I can't remember exactly how he described them but I just remember me saying "Ok, I have to hear this."

A good portion of my current musical collection is made up of bands that have been mentioned on this forum.  Damn, I'm impressionable.

About the only ones for me (I end up finding a lot of my own music and hooking other people on it) are Sonata Arctica (from my brother) and Illnath (from Trollstormur).  However, I've gotten my brother hooked on just about everything I listen to, and multiple friends/acquaintances of mine hooked on Nightwish (who are nice and accessible).

My metalhead buddy got me into, among others: Iron Maiden, Arsis, Atheist, Buckethead, Cathedral, Death, Evergrey, Exodus, Iced Earth, Slough Feg, Nevermore, Overkill, and Testament. A bunch of those are among my favorite bands now. I kinda used to be one of those 'Nothing good has come out since the 1970s' kids. I didn't even seriously get into music until about a year ago or so.

I have a friend that is constantly listening to Rush. I don't mean he liked them a lot, I mean he would constantly be listening to Rush. All the time. Everytime I got in the car with him. Everytime I hung out with him. I never heard him play any other band for quite a long time after I first met him.

The point is, I thought they sounded a bit shit, and I deliberatly didn't listen to any of their stuff outside of those snippets, simply to spite him. Then I wound up moving in with the dude, and ripped all his CDs onto my computer. Eventually 2112 came on random one night when I was stoned out of my mind, and I spent the next few days listening to the Rush catalogue over and over again.

Actually, this guy got me into a lot of great stuff. I wouldn't be listening to Maiden, Sabbath, or Spocks Beard if it weren't for him either, so he's done me well I reckon.

So, I guess my favourite band that has been recommended would be things that people on here have sent me.
Three posters in particular.
Tommy, Gryff and Red. (manda).

Thanks you guys! I think. Some of the stuff is really infectious.

My brother got me into both Pantera and Megadeth.

Actually one of the best influences on my music taste was my Dad. Although a lot of the artists I just curiously tried out rather than him going "hey listen to this".

One of my best friends got me into a lot of the music that I can classify as my favourite when we were in like grade 10 and 11. Jawbreaker, Wilco, Elliott Smith, Alkaline Trio to just name a few. And those are all on my top 10, so I'm quiet indebted to her.

Nine Nails, by a friend, just prior to The Downward Spiral being released.  I was a total rock/college radio kid at the time and just thought "ew, what is all this...nothing but noise...".  But he force fed it and eventually I got it.  Oddly enough, he and I are still friends, but Nine Inch Nails led me to other stuff, more abrasive, odder things, while he reverted into the rock/college radio guy.

I'm the most independent of my friends when it comes to new music. I tend to be the friend who gets other people into bands.

Although my boss is my friend, and the CDs she sends me to review have helped me discover some magnificent bands. Boy Kill Boy, Emmerhoff, Helalyn Flowers, Cayto, Anathallo...just a few that come to my mind.

Blind Guardian, because of this I discovered that metal can be quite fun, to the point of ridiculosity because of this band, which was a bit of a revelation at the time, this lead to me listening to a lot of other awesome metal, coincedentally, he is also the friend that introduced me to webcomics. Very much indebted to him

ZOMG MY INDIE DONG IS HUUUUUGE.

Two that I really started to love were both introduced to me by a very good friend of mine: Aril Brikha and Theorem.  Unfortunately, both of those artists only have one real CD under their belts (Theorem did a collaboration effort with a few other people but that doesn't really count as a solo effort).

I think I most often serve this purpose for other people, in fact, one of my friends said yesterday that I was a "pioneer" for taking it upon myself to discover so much interesting music through alternative means. My parents don't have interesting tastes, and I never had any older siblings or anything like that, so I guess I did pave my own path in that sense, but it would have been nearly impossible without the internet. Thanks, internet! Aside from that, there have been quite a few bands that friends have turned me on to: Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Skinny Puppy, Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Anathema, Boards of Canada, the list goes on.

Myspace is how I found that one band that played my favorite non-licensed song from Guitar Hero (All Of This is the song title, btw).

Although I guess I owe Guitar Hero for that song?

I get most of music from my Uncle. He's got a room full of tapes and CDs his mates have beens ending him for decades. Ages ago  I dug out a few that he hadn't got around to listening to, and now I owe him for Tom Waits, Billy Bragg (and meeting him), Loudon Wainwright, Sonic Youth, BDP, Sun Ra, Beefheart, The Velvets etc et bloody cetra

This man is a dangerous music obsessive.

I'm on a mission to get all my mates into jazz. Coverting the unbelievers! So far, Miles has done the trick every time.
