QC Forums Top 25 of 2006
« on: 26 Aug 2006, 21:13 »

I was thinking that doing a "Questionable Content Top 25 of 2006" would be a cool idea. There seem to be a good number of knowledgable posters when it comes to the subject of music and I think it'd be fun to do. If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to organize it and it would go into effect sometime in December. I'd tally up the votes and make the list. When the time comes, we could possibly make a webspace for the list with blurbs from certain posters who particularly enjoyed each album. Feel free to add on, comment or criticize here.

Here is the wiki page:
http://www.questionablewiki.com/index.php/Top_25_Albums_of_2006

Updates will be made to this thread and the page as necessary.

I haven't even bought 25 albums released in 2006 yet. I've bought quite a few, but not 25. I've still got, what, 50+ years of other music to try to catch up on...

Also I'm a spoil sport and dislike year end lists that rank albums that are completely disparate experiences. For instance, I love the Liars, Mogwai, Destroyer, TV On The Radio, and Yo La Tengo albums released this year. But how the hell do I rank them?? It would come down to personal preference...

To 'rank' the album, ask yourself these questions...

How many albums has the band had out?
Do they have a good track record?
How does it compare to previous albums?
Is this new album something of an accomplishment for the band, or have you seen it all before?
Which band has the better music? Most talent? Nice production?
Choose little bits of each album that you don't like. Compare these to the little bits of the other albums you don't like.

I do think it's possible to 'rank' albums, and I think doing it well is a skill.
It's easy to put your favourite album at the top of a list, but is it REALLY the best album you've heard that year?

Maybe we should call it 'favourite 25 of 2006'?

I don't think ranking albums is a skill because it is subjective as can be. What does 'best album of the year' mean?? What does 'best' alone even mean?? The album I listened to most, the album I think will last the test of time, the album I think would most recommend to others, etc.?? All those questions have very different answers to me.

To me the 'best' is the one that's considerred the biggest achievement. That's why I ask myself all those questions. There are a lot of factors I have to take into consideration, not just how much I enjoy the music.
Actually, the more I think about my argument, the more I realise how silly it is.

Truth be told, I used to be obsessed with ranking albums and making various lists (and that was before I read High Fidelity). But since 2006 was the first year I really kept up with new albums coming out as much as I could, I found myself listening to fantastic albums almost every month, and at the end of the year--having finally purchased Joanna Newsom's Ys two days ago--I feel like ranking albums would be an exercize in futility because I have about 5 or 6 albums from 2006 that I would say were the album of the year. Depending on my mood, the direction of the wind, and whether I'm drunk or not, the top spot keeps changing hands.

why do they have to be ranked? couldn't it just be an unordered list of albums that are considered by most here to be an excellent example of what was put out in 2006.

Me too. Jokes on the hipsters though, I don't think they're going to do another album. It's not like it means hipsters understand black metal anyway. Play 'em Ulvers Nattens Madrigal and they'd still run crying to their mummys. It'll be like it always is, one metal band gets name-dropped for a while, then everyone forgets about them. I'm only going to really get annoyed when Pitchfork starts namedropping Crown of Autumn or Wyrd.

And that will never happen, so I'm cool.

: Kari's search didn't turn up anything, so I decided to check Greg's user stats on last.fm. It turns out he has never listened to a band from the Dischord record label.

: CHECK IT OUT DUDES!! I totally set up an account on last.fm and kept messaging him about Fugazi. He said he means to check them out but doesn't own anything by them.

Guys, I'm reading Pitchfork's list and I'm wondering if there's any way we can kind of do what they do with theirs, i.e. write a little bit about each album that makes the list. Also, to everyone saying "why can't this be unordered?" I have responses:

1) This is fun.
2) With the diverse musical tastes of this forum, it's likely that every participating forumite's top ten will cover some different ground. You won't get an unordered list but no two lists will be the same - for example, Eyeball Kid's list is likely to include the Hold Steady and not Beach House. My list will probably include Beach House but not the Hold Steady. I see this being true for a lot of folks, like Khar, Will, Tommy, Darryl, Storm and Kai. Having these lists which are all over the map will provide a fairly comprehensive review of music, but ranking allows for some harmless fun and majority rule.

I was pretty sure Agalloch weren't going to be doing anything significant after this album. I may have confused them with another band but I don't think so. I'll search out the interview.

EDIT: No, I'm thinking of someone else. Agalloch might possible hiatus for a bit in a few years whilst Don Anderson does his PhD, but that's it as far as I can see.

That's cool! I had been thinking for ages that this would be their last release. Yay!

They have to be ranked because the list will be based on how many points each album receives. A #1 album, for example, will receive 10 points, #2 9 and so on to #10. The top 25 point-getters will make up the list.

Also, rankings are more fair, says I, the one organizing this. And finally, there wouldn't be enough members to simply take the albums with the "most votes".

My list did not in fact include Beach House.

Skittish, question: are you going to be revealing each participant's list at the end? It would be cool to see what individual forumites pick. Maybe a separate wiki page or section for it?

Also guys, I wholeheartedly support this idea. Rather than a thread in which everyone just posts their favourite albums and no discussion occurs, this ought to get us talking about, reviewing and reconsidering music from 2006. I happen to apparently be in some kind of slight minority with my opinion that 2006 was actually quite a strong year for music insofar as the quality of the best albums released was pretty darned high. I would like very much for this view to be the majority and that's not going to happen if we don't have any discourse.

I think 2006 was a pretty good year as well.

Really enjoyed albums by Agalloch, Summoning, Ihsahn and Borknagar.

Psycroptic's "Symbols of Failure" is one of the best Death Metal albums I've heard in years, its brutal, technical, well written and has some fucking excellent riffs. Oh and the Album Artwork is excellent as well

The Mars Volta (I know a lot of people hate them on this board) put out a very solid album. Iron Maiden and Queensryche prooved they still have it with very strong albums.
