I have always been a big fan of The Cure, and reading up on them you always hear about how they set the stage for goth music to come.

So, liking the Cure and therefore curious about what Goth is I've checked out some "goth" bands, but they all seem to mostly be taking after Pornography which is one of my least favorite albums by The Cure.

My question to you guys is:

Is there any bands that seem to be more influenced by the style of Faith (Or even Disintegration), ie. slow gloomy dirges.

I haven't really looked into it all that much, so don't assume I know some obvious answers to this question. :)

I'm just going to go with the first two off the top of my head, and hten Khar or somebody can fill in the holes. mostly, because I"m really lazy to think of more than two.


Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju is my personal favorite album by them, and it sounds like what I think you're going for. Later in their career they kind of move off into more synthy stuff, but this and their earlier albums are right up your alley, I think.

Bauhaus - In The Flat Field. Definitely get this. THE seminal goth band.

What bands did you check out?

Try Fields of the Nephilim - Dawnrazor, and what Kai suggested. This is a difficult question, because the Cure aren't really a goth band.

Yeah, most people say that they aren't really a Goth band, but what can you label them as? Either way, I'm not looking for Goth so much as it links up with those Cure albums.

Thanks for the help though. I will download 'em all as I'm going somewhere with dialup for four months.

I just call them goth rock for simplicity purposes. are they actually goth? No. but I'm lazy and goth is just way easier to explain to people.

I never much cared for The Cure, so I'm not tremendously familiar with their work...one group that I do enjoy immensely, however, is The Violet Burning, and I've heard The Cure listed as one of those 'RIFY' bands...might be worht checking out, anyway...

Also TVB's singer, Mike Pritzl, has a solo album out under the name The Gravity Show...the album is called Fabulous Like You and it's pretty neat...all kinds of darker electronicky sounding songs about love and monsters!

I read a quote once from Robert Smith to the effect that he never considered The Cure to be a Goth band, and kinda doesn't like it when people call them that. I laughed maniacally and wondered "Then what in the hell does he think they are?" To me, they practically founded the genre.

I know now that I was naive to think that The Cure was Goth, but my question remains. What are they if not Goth?

As far as Goth bands go, I'm partial to The 69 Eyes. They're a Finnish rock band, but I wouldn't think they fall under the "droney and quiet" criteria of your search.

They've just recently started releasing albums in the US and you're likely to find their re-release of the "Devils" album at most standard music stores. FYE, Camelot, etc.

Pornography your least favorite? I mean, I'm personally a huge fan of Pornography and Bloodflowers. Definitely among my favorite records, but how can you like any Cure album less than Wild Mood Swings?

I don't know, I like Wild Mood Swings for what it is. Kind of just one off pop album. Actually, I would say that their newest album is my very least favorite album, but I don't even usually count it.

I don't like the heavy use of drums and little other instruments of pornography as well as the overall angry and fucked up vibe.

This is a pretty insightful question really.

Joy Division, The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees etc. are, just like many other bands less associated with moping and hairspray, post-punk. They're not really goth. Goth was something that was invented by the people inspired by them. They are the prototype, but they aren't the thing itself.

This is something that has always bugged me. Joy Division weren't goth. Their music was icily cool and you could probably picture much-made-up goths playing it, but as guys they were just motley, sweary mancs. Even Ian Curtis was a boozehound. And yet they get knocked into all of that stuff.
